John Lydon on Public Image, the Pistols, Cliff Richard, Arsenal, Alzheimer's and Atomic Rooster...

This is a rollercoaster as you might imagine, Lydon in Malibu in a high viz shirt - funny, chaotic, moving, fiercely original, completely gripping from start to finish. Among the subjects in the firing line...
The most disappointing record ever made.
The emotional charge of live performance.
His despair at the new Dany Boyle-directed mini-series 'Pistol'.
How Beefheart's Trout Mask Replica is "like a Pinter play".
His collaboration with Kate Bush that never happened - and a demonstration of the vocal he wanted to record.
His dislike of the Beatles.
A lost record shop in Finsbury Park "run by an old lady" selling roots rock reggae and metal.
The "steep learning curve" of life as a carer for his wife Nora.
Steve Took of Tyrannosaurus Rex living in the next-door squat.
The overwhelming effect of seeing "Cliff Richards" at the Rainbow when he was five.
The lifelong magnetic pull of Arsenal FC.
... and Chris Isaak, Horace Andy, the Third Ear Band, the Faces, T Rex, the Edgar Broughton Band ("there was a bit of hooligan about them"), Quintessence and the Bee Gees.

John's a good egg, with a lot of old fashioned soul: he sends thoughts out like Catherine wheels, with a lot of cor-blimey humour. But he is authentic to the last and never takes himself too seriously, while remembering to have a blast. But he brings up such rich anecdotes which haven't been polished and his honesty is legendary. God bless you John!

Agree completely. I find it impossible to feel sorry for myself after listening to him. Yes he can have a good grizzle, but once that is out of his system he's boot straps and helmet, ready to put actions to his words. Authentic and Integrity. He's said since the beginning and worked his arse off to make it happen - autonomy and independence from the music industry. The price he's paid has been steep, zero commercial exposure, but he's been free to do it his way.

Wow, I was thinking EXACTLY the same thing! So, next time I start feeling mice elf heading down to the 'Pit of Despond' half of my Bipolar Disorder, I must try watching some Classic Lydon vids. I think (hope) they'll help. I've loved John's attitude ever since I Sold My Soul For Punk in 1978 (NZ was almost a whole bloody YEAR behind the rest of the world back then, as far as record & movie releases went), and he is one of the very few celebrities to simply Tell The Truth & bugger "being polite"! I hope he lives to 110, with faculties fully intact, cos by God we need him. I'm tryna think of any other contemporary singer or actor who could take his place, & the best I could come up with is Mark E. Smith, but sadly he died a year or 2 ago, and he was a bit of a prick, tbh. LoL! So: Long Live Johnny!!!!!! (*Edited for typos)

God bless ya' John. * After my incontinent mother (paralyzed from the neck down due to a stroke after she broke her hip) was literally found raped and helpless in one of NYC's so called best nursing homes, I brought mom home to care for myself 24/7 for four months straight non stop w/home nurses and visiting doctors. I helped wash and dress her, I administered all her meds and nutrition formulas daily into her feeding tube, I lifted her out of bed into her wheel chair for comfort to watch TV, I always brushed her hair, and thank the Lord I got the chance to tell my mother "thank you" for taking care of me as hard as it was all by herself with a terrible spoiled brat like me. And you know after she passed away, I cried everyday til my stomach was in pain for nine months til one day her spirit paid me a visit leaving me 3 undeniable clues telling me mom was A-ok in heaven. Since that "day" I never weeped again. LOL everyone.

He’s basically a British eccentric. I feel bad that he’s dealing with Alzheimer’s with his wife. I cared for my father when he had Dementia at the end of his life and it was a full time job taking care of him. So my heart goes to him. One day she may forget who she is or who he is and it will be hard to deal with. It will be shocking and sad. When my dad passed away finally, it was a relief. His suffering was over. So I have some experience with what he’s going through and I don’t envy him. Good Luck to him and his wife Nora. I wish them well but I know what’s coming. He’s a survivor so I think he’ll make it through.

@Butterfly Moon It requires round the clock observation and care. My father started cooking Cans on the stove after he opened them. He forgot about using a pot! It almost started a kitchen fire! 🔥 My mother started becoming forgetful and did start a Grease fire 🔥 on the Stove! And the kitchen Wall was starting to smoke! I barely succeeded in shutting off the Stove and diffusing the situation. And it’s a minor miracle, I didn’t burn 🔥 my forearms badly. The coils were glowing bright orange. It was getting out of hand and I panicked. We almost had to run out and call the Fire 🔥 Department. But by the time they would show up, half the house would be burning down. So we really dodged a bullet! But just barely! So I know all about the dangers of mental confusion and forgetfulness! It’s horrible!

It’s a minor miracle that I didn’t get third degree burns on my forearms when I shut the stove off. The kitchen wall was starting to burn. 🔥 But then it calmed down and we had to open the windows and doors to get the smoke out. Then I painted the kitchen walls over later on. I don't think a 'Go Fund Me' would be something he'd entertain. He's not looking for charity. I'd say Nora has probably still got some money out aside that could be paying for her care. He's always said that money for PiL has been separate and aside from PiL they've been living off the smell of an oily rag their while lives. His money will have been sunk into the court case, but I'd say hers will be separate. That kind of thing would be something he'd see as being right and proper. Plus I think Martin and his wife have taken on a bit of the caring for Nora when he's away too. I think he'd be ok for that stuff. If you wanted to help him out, I'd say that what would give him the greatest pleasure would be buying his PiL merch and albums. Help invest in what gives him the greatest joy. Looking after John emotionally will help him be the best person he can be for Nora. Just my thoughts anyway.

I was already angry - didn't know why, but that song sort of focused it in some way. It turned the name of an energy I was feeling - anger (or maybe puberty ;) - into something else, something more constructive or just more connected to thought maybe. I really can't explain it, but I've always been grateful to him. And God bless him for being so devoted to his wife on her final journey. Still wish we could’ve heard Commercial Zone as intended but still enjoyed This is What You Want. Even his mid 80s-early 90s albums were solid (album being the highlight in that bunch), and his solo record being highly under appreciated. The 2 modern PiL albums are also awesome too. Really nice person and although he is anti the forthcoming Pistol series I am looking forward to it. I saw him on the recent "evening with" tour in Clacton and was not at all disappointed. Johnny Rotten is a genius!!

It was entertaining but I'm not so sure you got as many answers on record collecting there, more a band history! At least to start with. A learning was how John got his taste for a variety of music based on growing up and the culture-mix. Very healthy outlook!

He IS punk rock.... a total individual man... back in the day I thought he just hated everything, which to me as a young rebellious teen was fantastic...... over the years I learned much more about him, he has such a quirky, broad, open view on music.... he had such a humble but interesting upbringing....& all the rest. When he formed PiL it was a revelation to me. I could go on & on & ON about him...... bless his lovely soul❤ thankfully I had the privilege of seeing PiL playing live a few years ago, great gig, good times..... xxx

Punk….. 🤔 The pistols were really a 70’s pub rock band with trendy street clothes…. The production and musicianship was too good for DIY punk

Bollocks was straight punk rock to me and their sound was unmatchable. John’s lyrics and delivery were pure snot, Jones had the tone and Cooky in particular being a life long influence in the area of drum work. Brilliant stuff really.

I've always found Lydon's facial mannerisms a little creepy, but at least he speaks the truth regardless as to whether he offends. I can't stand politically correct people that sugar coat their language, I'm intrigued by his views on 'Cliff Richard' - you need to edit heading THERE's NO MENTION of Harry Rodger Webb aka - " as above "

Still think Flowers Of Romance is Lydon's finest overall body of work. It just encompasses everything - his love of Sid, the Bromley contingent, Nora, the music biz, material tribalism (or vice versa?) and on and on. No matter how you slice it, one of the songs is going to fit perfectly somewhere, whether rightfully or wrongly.

I personally think Metal Box was the best, radical change from first album and the Sex Pistols.
@DungeonStudio
@DungeonStudio 2 года назад
Metal Box/2nd Edition is good too. Very personal and deeper lyrics from John, and great use of synthesizers and production effects. But still very raw sounding. Almost like demos done at Keith's flat or something. Flowers Of Romance dares the listener to crank up the volume on the first track, and BOOM! Just unrelenting from there on.

@@DungeonStudio I missed the lack of guitar on the FOR album and a little too experimental for me at that time. However still more interesting than the albums that followed it.
@DungeonStudio

For sure on that! I respect John for keeping it all going as he did. But it all seemed to wander off into becoming a caricature of himself and using and mocking the best in the biz to make bigger bucks. Which is still very punk to me. :)

@@DungeonStudio Their peak creative period was 78-81, after that pretty much downhill which surprised me. I saw the band live in 2012 and had to leave before the end of the gig as it was too depressing seeing how the mighty had fallen.

John Lydon a great Arsenal supporter (supporting the local team). I was born in the Chelsea area, then the family moved to London East close to West Ham FC. However, Arsenal supported my sporting projects when I was young. On a serious a note, looking after a spouse with Alzheimer's during the pandemic (my heart goes out to him).

I saw PiL about 12 years ago and they were incredible. I really hope John isn't quite how you describe him though. When I think of people I know personally, I find the kind of people who say "and if anyone's offended, too bad" are the ones I avoid like the plague. They are the people who don't think twice about dropping litter and playing loud music at 3am, and fck everyone else. A decent person DOES care if they offend others. I, for example, swear like a motherfucker and have strong views on all sorts of subjects, but if children are present or I'm in the kind of company who maybe easily offended, I keep it to myself out of basic politeness. In my day that used to be a bigger virtue than not giving a shit if someone is offended.

It all becomes clearer, those who were around in the mid '70's how the establishment were clearly becoming rattled by the SXP'S, John Lydon is sensitive and honest despite the on stage persona which to many appeared at the time to be threatening and antagonistic... many more should listen to this man and be pleasantly surprised.

Steve Jones maintains that he and the film makers informed John of all of this way in advance and sought his opinions on it. John always says how honest he is but this is one time I'm tempted to question that. They say they reached out to him to have him participate in this several times.
