been listening to this genius for nearly 50 years - saw him many many times live. i once read somewhere that his concerts can be like religious experiences...so so true. totally and utterly mesmerizing.
He looked pissed yeah and he may well have been off his face but in spite of this he can coax the angels from heaven to send shivers up my spine got to love that man - he was a musical maverick in a world of his own and us ...,,.... just lookin on .... in awe
He was in his own musical world, nobody could conjure up that feeling that John portrays through music. Always been part of my musical life and luckily saw him at the jazz cafe in the late 90s. God bless you John .We are all just looking on 😊
a dj on the late night radio show opined " if you consider yourself a serious fan of music and never listened to john ? think again ! " irreplaceable ( honoured to have been in the audience many times ) 🎶 🎸
I'm in love with this. Wish I had seen him live. I was introduced to 'Solid Air' in '94; I then bought 'Sunday's Child' around the same time. I once heard he was playing 'Lochgelly Centre' but he just wasn't my boyfriends cup of tea and I didn't want to go on my own. Years down the line , out of all the music I've listened to he was the only one that stuck to me emotionally (and the Cocteau Twins and other bits here and there) that I started watching him on You Tube and he is my deep favourite ....will order 'the man upstairs' on DVD soon so I can watch in awe and get a bit drunk and have a night in. That boyfriend, (he's now my husband) just leaves me to it when I put him on TV, although on a night out he's come in drunk and serenaded me with 'Gun Money' which was well entertaining.
😉 nice piece Helen, the man was outstanding, met him during different stages of his career (1970-2005), mindboggling!!! cheers (how's the boyfriend? ;-) )
I sang harmonies with John on his album Well Kept Secret, which is the album Gun Money is on. To sing harmony with a brilliant singer who improvised all the time was challenging but amazing. Best Wishes, Lee.
THIS is the great period of his life. He went from sublime to simply genius the closer to the end he got. Magical. Alan Thomson (of course) and Spencer. They cook it up. Fantastic.
Ok, John Martyn has always his incredible voice. But a great period! Car accident with injuries, one cyst on his knee. After, he had been amputated of his leg. He made, with courage and always smiling , his come back. But, l didn't find his voice.
loved john's music always. he was my very first concert, in dublin 1981. this is very fuckn special ! a masterpiece ( also like the black suit and slippers too )
Simply love what he can do whatever the vibe, it always works. My fondest memory is the night I photographed John After he playing solo in a Stoke pub back in 1996. Just him, his guitar, amp and a pedal. Just great.
Check out Liverpool singer Mick ROACH on Spotify his track Meantime and good in blues he says it's a Martyn tribute...amazing vocal just like John ....
Oh John you nailed it again.......fabulous performance as always....Jazz JM style....God bless you big man. Saw you at Reading university way back when...been a fan for ever. Big shout out for bass player.
Loved recording/mixing the audio. Thanks for posting Eleanor/Lyn. Also 'John Wayne' amazing that night in Vicar Street. Great people to work with. Really miss John.
