Hard to imagine this being about Katy Perry; she's kinda regarded as being pretty shallow, and I think it would be hard for an artist with the intellectual depth of John Mayer to find himself that deeply drawn to her.

She didn’t actually leave, they decided to broke up because they couldn’t work together even though they deeply loved each other, Katy was asked after their breakup if John was a revenge romance towards her ex husband and she said “Absolutely not, I was deeply in love with him, I’m still deeply in love with him”. Also, John explained that even though they broke up they still loved each other so much that some Sunday nights she used to send him just an emoji of a wave 🌊 as a way to tell him that it was hard to stay apart and she still loved him, and he replied with another emoji of a wave as a way to say he got that and it was the same for him, so well... they loved each other but they couldn’t work :(
