Having grown up just outside the Blueridge Mountains and the Shenandoah Valley, I can't hear this song without thinking of home. Those mountains will forever be home, and this song will forever make me cry.
Mr John McDermott version of this song, is truly one of pure beauty and great talent!!! I LOVE it!!!! I have not only this song on my IPod but many many others of John . Enjoy people, enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!
As I listen to this version I can close my eyes and be transported back to the Shenandoah Valley which I visited. Just a beautiful, moving rendition of a song that is American.
Thanks very much for your comment! :) The song itself is beautiful, but it's probably even more beautiful if you have seen this place and you can remember it while listening.
He has the most beautiful voice I've ever heard. When he sang Danny Boy it brought tears to my eyes. Everything he sings is amazing and he definitely has a gift and it comes from his heart.
Here is another beautiful song by him... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MjNwsTbixbc.html...John McDermott recorded a song for his parents' 50th wedding anniversary when he was "discovered". Check this song out as well...ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-NNL_wGZgV5Q.html
The most beautiful thing I have ever heard. Being a native, of Missouri, and retired in Idaho, it's really hard to hold the tears back, listening to this.
banjopicker1969 Yes I’m a native of Missouri too and I hope one day the true origin of this beautiful song will be noticed. I know it takes place on the Missouri River but they all think it’s about Virginia but I know it isn’t.
By FAR my favorite of the "Irish Tenors". And actually, my favorite tenor just in general. While he has that operatic voice, somehow he still has that "everyman" quality to his voice. It's hard to explain, but I just love the way he sings.
This is a beautiful song. One of my fondest memories was going on Skyline Drive and stopping to look down on the Shenandoah River and Valley. It is truly God's Country.
Thank you for these beautiful songs. I am 3 generations removed from a Donegal family who came in the 1850's and this music moves me to remember. I had the pleasure of visiting Ireland for a week a few years back and oved it. Thanks again
***** As an Irish American, I cannot believe that you are neither Irish or Scotch. You obviously have their soul to love such beautiful music by a phenomenal singer
Joe Cunningham Maybe I have some drop of Celts blood left from ancient people who inhabited the land where I live :) That's how I could explain my love for this music!
I simply love this version of this wonderful song. I come from the highlands of Scotland and have made the Shenandoah Valley my home for the last 12 years - we have the honor of owning one of the oldest log properties in the valley (1790)...I shall be purchasing his music... Thank you for letting us hear this.
Definitely the most beautiful song ever to originate in America and no one sings it better that John McDermott. Thank you, LadyGreyCarolyn for taking the time to produce this and other John McDermott songs.
Thanks My Lady for your time in teaching me some new music and the voice of an amazing Tenor. And when I used to hear this sung by others it always made me think of the books I have read about that part of the USA. I now have another thought when I hear this song.
Saw a picture of the Shenandoah Valley pop up as a screensaver on my laptop and was reminded of the song that I loved as a wee little boy, so I started looking for it on RU-vid and found your channel. Thanks for sharing this and opening my eyes, ears and heart to the beautiful voice of John McDermott.
Yesterday was the 38th anniversary of the loss of my beloved Mom. It was a sad few days with the 13th anniversary of 9/11 here in NYC and then, I remembered all of your youtube postings of John and came here again to hear that beautiful voice. He gets right to the heart. Thanks you again, Lady GreyC. for putting John where he can be heard.
Thanks to you for sharing about your memories, indeed they have been sad days for you. But you're welcome, and I'm glad I can be of some help just by posting videos! God bless you :)
mary jane Prouty Mary Jane I send to you my deepest condolences at your double loss. No mom should lose a child. I hope the beautiful music and heart that John puts into each song brings you comfort and loving memories of your lass. Life is not easy at all. God bless. Barbara
mary jane Prouty God bless you, Mary Jane, and accept my condolences as well for your losses. I hope music can help you at least a little bit when sadness becomes too strong...
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you Away, you rolling river Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you Away, we’re bound away, across the wide Missouri Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you Away, you rolling river Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you Away, we’re bound away, across the wide Missouri Tis seven long years, since last I saw you Away you rolling river Tis seven long years, since last I saw you Away, we're bound away across the wide Missouri Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you Away, you rolling river Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you Away, we’re bound away, across the wide Missouri Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you Across the wide Missouri Oh, Shenandoah, oh, Shenandoah, oh, Shenandoah
Thanks so much for posting. My father played this song in the car as a kid. I scoured RU-vid until I found the exact version. I immediately knew this was the one as soon as it started. Thank you.
Roy Sheaks if you have any of the Celt in you this song and all the others will bring it out in you maybe you should do the DNA test you might be surprised
Charles Bates Believe I actually do have a very wee bit of Irish blood, French, Danish and mostly German. My my great, great, great...grandpa, Jacob, came from Germany in 1769 when he was 9. He fought in the American Revolution. A farmer, of course.
This song actually has nothing to do with the Shenandoah Valley or river, other than being historically and culturally misappropriated by my fellow Virginians. It's a song about a person named Shenandoah and the Missouri River. This is a very nice version by John McDermott.
Duck Cluck Goose Right it makes me sad that all of these covers don’t show the place where it actually came from. Which is nothing but the Missouri River.
Hi,LadyGreyCarolyn...Thanks so much for uploading all the beautiful songs of JOHN MCDERMOTT!! I enjoyed them all!! is it possible to upload one particular song I like by John called CRAZY MARY?
Shenandoah: {John Gate} sings of a she doe on the land, his love for his daughter upon the sands of the land in which the flowing arteries of water cast artistic veins which mold her into a witch. This is the Latter Day Pygmalion story of creation that is Lion-Dragon 7/26/1964 B.A.S. + {Daughter of the Sun} & now Mother of Louis Bullock.
