That John plays this so beautifully over so many years and bands and styles shows what a major dude he is. I’ve followed him since the beginning going back to his time with Miles Davis and never been let down. Badass.

When you enter the Karnataka College of Percussion, you don't even touch a drum for a while (so I heard) but rather you learn the syllables by heart that you want to play on your tablas later on. That explains the scat voicing, which are actually studied syllables. I liked the precision with which they played. And as a last remark: my favorite was the six string bass, which you hear so rarely.

John is one of the best guitarist of all time. I got to see him in the 70s with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. An incredible concert. He always used a middle eastern flair in his music.

so glad you guys enjoyed this. Everyone of them fantastic musicians. Timing is great too as i hope this will compliment tomorrow nights offering with John's Shakti in that some may appreciate more the skill and talent involved in this type of music. When you consider John is nearly 80 here, with arthiritis and other old age stuff, it's awesome. Playing guitar at least as good as anyone you've featured, in my opinion.

Everything John McLaughlin has done is astounding. He is one of a kind. Miles Davis named a track after him (on Bitches Brew). He’s still going strong, at 79 (just released a new album). The Mahavishnu Orchestra supported Frank Zappa in the early ‘70s. Frank was shocked by their virtuosity and power, and their influence can be heard on some of Frank’s albums from that period (Overnite Sensation; One Size Fits All, etc.). Thanks to the patron who selected this amazing composition (I’m not crazy about the keyboard sounds, but that’s a minor quibble). Thanks SaD! Btw, I’ve seen John live on four occasions, and every one was shattering. Correction: re the keyboard sounds, I was referring to the original album recording, not this live performance. Sweet mother India, this is mind blowing stuff. Zakir Hussain is phenomenal on the tablas.

The singer was singing the same melody line as guitarist John McLaughlin was playing. The song was an Indian flavoured song from an album McLaughlin released in 2008. For something similar, see the video "Gary Valenciano Spain (Chick Corea) from Wish 107.5" , where Valenciano sings along with a complicated piano and flute melody before going into a scatting part based on jazz singer Al Jarreau's vocal version of the original Chick Corea instrumental.

Had the pleasure of seeing John McLaughlin and Mahavishnu in L.A. in 1984. This was the debut tour of the new Mahavishnu, the second iteration, the first more properly known as Mahavishnu Orchestra. Phenomenal show. For most of it McLaughlin was played a Synclavier sythesized guitar. The sounds he produced with that guitar had me fooled some of the time. I kept looking at the keyboard player but his hands weren't moving with what I was hearing. John's were. Side note: one of the other main folk to play seriously with a Synclavier guitar was Zappa. But not until a couple of years AFTER McLaughlin put it through its paces. Blessings.

Loved it!! Back in the 70s John formed this band Shakti, where he could experiment with fusions of traditional Indian music with experimental jazz, blues and rock tropes. They put out a few albums and John moved on. They reformed in the 97 as Remember Shakti with various musicians form the first band, plus Mahadevan, the singer in this clip. They have some great clips on YT from both versions of the band. And seeing John do this kind of music when he's younger (either in the 70s or 97) is worth the effort. You can feel the love and positivity throughout all this music. Thanks again.

I'm not a particularly knowledgeable fan, but I've been a longtime casual fan, and I can tell you that I've never heard anything that John McLaughlin was involved with that I haven't loved. Whether it's been this version of him with a fantastic band of musicians I'm not familiar with, or his collaborative live appearances with Paco De Lucia and Al Dimeola, or his Mahivishnu Orchestra performances and recordings, all that I have heard has been loved.

Huge eastern influences in this music. The tablas are a phenomenal instrument in the right hands. So much is drawn here from traditional rhythms mixed into incredible progressive jazz music. The vocalist as well is drawing from a deep well of tradition. Indian classical music. Blessings.

Shakti, old and new? Oh man, you guys are really getting inside deep things now. John is someone very very special, I hope you get into more McLaughlin, the Mahavishnu Orchestra is a musical treasure. Not only that, he always has the most amazing and accomplished world class musicians in his groups. It is almost disgusting how masterful it all is, but the beauty and intensity makes it all acceptable! There is SO much, some does not always hold up in comparison to other, but only when comparing it to HIS stuff. Still blows away almost anyone else. Anyway, I love McLaughlin, ha ha. Discovering him, for many of us, took us from the Zeppelin Hendrix thing and into a whole new world, especially in helping us find Miles and Coltrane and jazz, and the music of India and beyond. Thanks so much!

Really tight, crazy talented band. Back in the late-70’s I was a new guitar player and in love with playing. I remember reading an interview with McLaughlin in Guitar Player magazine; He spoke of his experiences in Mahavushnu Orchestra and he talked about giving guitar lessons to make ends meet back in the mid-60’s. One of his students was a cat named Jimmy Page..I remember having to read it like 5-times cuz I went 😳.. In the interview he also talked about his daily practice routine being between 8 and 12 hours per day and that was after playing professionally for 20 years at the time ..Just about quit playing guitar..😊 THANKS FOR SHARING THIS!

The music & vocals based on syllables in the Indian Konnakol & Carnatic styles here are one of several forms of classical Indian music and vocal styles that are similar but here it's more modern mixed with jazz and a lot of improvising with an underlining structure and timings that direct and signal these well trained artist to know when changes will occur. I am no expert but have been a long time fan and have many friends who've studied this music most of their lives. Great reaction to a wonderful performance

thank you for the reaction, i want just to mention that there's a lot of improvisation here, especially when it comes to solos, every solo was pure improvisation, if you go deeper into indian music you'll understand the importance of improvisation, it's one of the basis of this music !!

Didn't notice the bass and kit at first, and it's full frame on the TV, not huge, but 3 feet away! lol. Cool AF. Always loved Ravi's sets at Monterey Pop and the Concert for Bangla Desh. This is a more modally or maybe just more sonically familiar somehow, but I love the rhythmic, well, ALL the interplay. Love Shakti, too, I think you've got something for me from that lineup further down my morning playlist too. Yay! ;> D

Tabla or eastern percussion is learnt in spoken syllables before practical arrives..it takes 20 years of discipline before one is considered a player,,,there is only a small number of phrases, and it is spoken rather then rhymical...it is a language with limited vocabulary and when learnt you increase your vocabulary and statements or combinations.
