John Mellencamp performs "Jack & Diane" and "R.O.C.K in the USA" live at the Farm Aid concert in Tinley Park, Illinois on October 3rd, 1998. Farm Aid was started by Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp in 1985 to keep family farmers on the land and has worked since then to make sure everyone has access to good food from family farmers. Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's board of directors in 2001.

I really wish he would sing the chorus with the passion that he had back then. Coming from a true fan, It's not just a silly song that he is sick of playing these days. It’s a classic that touches that feeling of love and youth where we can't go back to, but will treasure personally in our hearts.

I don't like this version, too much rap influence and it doesn't fit the song as originally presented where John actually sang the song. The text is not for the sensitive among us, but that wasn't the point either. However, I think the big thing about John Mellencamp at this time was his ability to sing in a direct and catchy way when the album American Fool came out in 1982. This was new for the time and quite groundbreaking.

The 90's were confusing for a lot of people. Rapping seems so out of place in this song. And you could tell John was sleeping with the fiddle player, she became way prominent.
