John Mellencamp with special guest Speck Mellencamp perform Authority Song live at the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony in the Grand Ballroom at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City March 10,2008
One of my favorite songs of all time! John says it best with"They think they're so cute when they got you on their conditions" ! Not to mention a great song to dance to, crank up in the car, or just plain rock out to!
"They think they're so cute ...", especially when they have the "will of God" on their side. "All religious notions are founded solely on authority; all the religions of the world forbid examination and do not want one to reason; authority wants one to believe in God; this God is himself founded only on the authority of a few men who pretend to know him, and to come in his name and announce him on earth. A God made by man undoubtedly has need of man to make himself known to man." - Percy Bysshe Shelley
@@rsu8689 Truly deep. The question is: what in us creates this God? What inside us requires stories to be written? What draws our hand to the pen? Is it fear? And what is fear except the anticipation of the future, or ripples of our past? Fear can not exist it the perpetual present, can it? A clear observation, not living in the past, nor thinking to the future is the only one capable of grasping at the eternal. Only a quiet mind is capable of listening for the voice of God. We can not see through crashing waves. Only through the calm still water is the truth clear and unobstructed by the focus on our own petty thoughts, likes, and dislikes. Thoughts, the result of our knowledge, past experiences, and cultural conditioning, are severely limited. By using limited tools, how are to approach the limitless?
I am a lifelong fan of JM, and LOVE how he dances and told him so when I met him at a CD signing in Manhattan. I have seen him in concert more times than I can count. He's an amazing songwriter, singer, performer and true to his beliefs. Never turned "Hollywood" either, still lives in Indiana. He's my Cherry "BOMB" as well as a Bad Boy type.......
I will never tire of hearing that song and the line "dying doesn't sound like that much fun! Come to Philly Johnny and bring that little tyke of yours too!
The induction of John Mellencamp into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is a very much deserved award. JM is an icon of the true roots of rock and roll...there is no entertainer that has not done more either for the plight of the American farming industry. Thank you for posting.
Middle of the road right leaning… Great tune, and he’s aces when it comes to helping the Farmers of America. I hear this song in my head when ever I file a grievance with the union at my job.
I remember when I was riding in the car with my parents and Dad blasted this song in our station wagon and saw two boys fighting outside the school. Probably my dad egged them on with the song.😁
@John Mellencamp I'm not sure if my reply posted last night😥.I loved seeing your videos on MTV and VH1 from the beginning. You are authentic and honest, your lyrics represent the truth and struggle of working people..I'm commenting from the New Hampshire seacoast, my favorite place in the world.
John has always been our only voice in the midwest! He has always stayed true to his roots and never forgets where he came from and who his fans are! And like, John, we don't really give a damn if people like him or not! Congratulations John and thanks for being our voice!
@John Mellencamp wooww.. John himself reply my comment!! I am doing good John, well, I had been listening your precious music since I was 10, and now I am 50s. You are genius and amazing!

@John Mellencamp Making progress with documentary that I'm co-producing, but having on going financial issues related to basic survival. I have been taking care of a dear friend of 30 plus years, trying to help her survive, too; and get her on medical disability, kidney transplant list, etc
John Mellencamp is to the people of Indiana in the same way Bruce Springsteen is to the people of New Jersey. There's a thread to their music that weaves throughout those regions.
