John Mellencamp - What If I Came Knocking - Human Wheels Special 1993 Live 

I met Kenny Aronoff yesterday during a clinic with Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. Had a great time with them, so lucky!

This is one of the best live performances you will see from anyone. The band is absolutely locked in. Aronoff and Grissom are on fire, John is in great voice as are his back-up singers, and he's owning the stage. And Lisa Germano is the secret weapon here. If this performance doesn't get you going, check your pulse!

Larry and Kenny, together, made what I think is the most powerful lineup Mellencamp had.

John is simply the best!! This song rocks !! Whats not to like! Ive seen him live 15 tomes in my life and he never disappoints!! His band is unequaled

Because it's not controversial, because it doesn't push boundaries, because it doesn't favor one side or the other, because it's all about a guy who stayed true to his roots and his beliefs. Yes it's a kick ass album - and still to this day it's relevant.

JCM never followed any trends and has put out all killer albums for 4 decades. Great artist.

Mellencamp truly captured the thrill of passion with his song "What if I came Knocking ". No other entertainer or singer could capture such a feeling as John Mellencamp of life and emotion in that era .

It doesn't get much better than this. John is great here, but the tightness of this band takes it to a whole new level.

John is a true American Icon who is an awesome singer / songwriter. This song along with the title track of this album "Human Wheels' are two of my favorite Mellencamp classics! Saw him a few times LIVE, each time it was incredible!

Just listened to the studio version of this again. Reminded of how rock was mixed back in the day. Vocals were a part of the band, just another instrument, not sitting out the front like everything is these days. Such a cohesive locked in sound.

Great arrangement … where it totally goes up gears is last verse sung an octave up and same with the last chorus leading into the Kicks…. Hair on the back of your neck stuff. Kenny Aronoff, very similar drummer to Rob Hirst from Midnight Oil.

Interesting comment by WishRepair! Having grown up when Springsteen broke into the scene on WMMS (Cleveland radio) he really seemed to speak for the everyday man, while Johnny Cougar was pushed to a pop sound from his record company. As time went Springsteen seemed to go a different path to me while Cougar became Mellencamp and his songs were about the common man and their plights. While Springsteen still has some good songs I think John Mellencamp has become the spokesman for common man!
