John Milton, Book 3, The Divine Council 

Book 3 brings us to the Divine Counsel. It appears on the cusp of Satan's entry into the world, much as when we return to this scene in Book 10, it is on the cusp of Satan's return to Hell.
The victory God predicts in enticing man to sin will end rather differently than the ignorant reader might expect. Man will receive grace despite his sin, and Satan, only more wrath. It is an extraordinary passage, usually missing from anthologies to the great detriment of the themes of the work as a whole.
