When i hear people say that,,, I tell them that it’s two different instruments. if you want to play bass, you better be able to walk up on a stage and play any song and it doesn’t matter if you heard it or not… that’s the difference. Guitar doesn’t follow the bottom.
@@FirstLast-cd6vv That's not the point... When you get to the more advanced stuff, bass is definitely not an easy instrument to play. Any fool with functioning arms can pickup a bass and play the root notes to a pop song, but not many people who haven't dedicated years and years of practice on bass can play the stuff that John Myung plays.
+Dalton Coste He might, but what I think is that he really talks honestly regardless of what the other people say. So, you can't really get that out in public because people are complete idiots.
@Martin Doll No problem, it's Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response. In other words, it describes the feeling of being calm and serene based on a trigger. In our case, John Myung's voice has an ASMR quality...it's soft and soothing/calming! And I personally agree lol 😄
29:32 - 33:14 kills me every time. Of all the music I've listened to (which is a lot being a sound engineer and lecturer), this piece is probably one of the simplest, purest and awesomest soft triggers.
As an aspiring and beginning bass student, I am almost obsessed with learning to play like John Myung. I realize I have a lot of work ahead of me but so worth it.
Even after 18 years playing, John Myung does not stop to impress me. Even if I can play most of his work with Dream Theater, it never ceases to amaze me how creative and beautifully crafted his bass lines are. You got a good role model for your musical journey.
Personally I admire this tone. I'm pretty close to it myself, but I think the pinnacle of his sound was on the score DVD. Unbelievable; fat, a little dirty, plenty of punch, midrange and highs in the right places, the absolute perfect bass tone.
He uses some light distortion as his baseline tone too. When playing fingerstyle in a metal band you have two options really. Either go for an Opeth Blackwater Park mix and have the bass be all boomy and fat or go for some top end distortion to cut through the mix
I really wish he'd come out with a solo album. Free Port Jam was epic and really showed off his skills. DT needs to take a break so that can happen and so JP can get his damn second solo album out
31:41 Whoa, that moment when the random groove you've been jammin on for 2 minutes suddenly turns into the "Awake Jam"/ intro to John Petrucci's Rock Discipline video. Nice!
This video and JM are the reason I got my first 6 string bass when I was 14 years old and I still have it today, one of my very favorite instruments. Feels really nostalgic watching this today..
How many bassists does it take to change a lightbulb?..... only one... John Myung... but you wouldn't have him waste his time on such petty things. "I'll get that for you John. Keep ripping on that bass."
I have the first tapping part stuck in my head, beautiful....I realize after 've been playing for 20 years that 3 beautiful and simple notes have more impact than 30 useless and without spirit notes. excuse my bad english.
I can't be the only one blown away at how detail oriented this video proves him to be. It's almost a shame, he clearly is the one member of the band (other than LaBrie, who doesn't really count) that isn't in it for the sake of playing really fast over the actual music composition.
if you are asking what if john myung plays guitar the answer is yes, because he needs to know what chords will play before he play the notes of bass so if john myung knows how to play guitar he can jam with petrucci
1998AD - "it's time for Pattern 5" 2037AD - "It's time for Pattern 109354.4" 2038AD - "Now that we've made sure that our intonation is acceptable, let's start our warm-up." 68578AD - "Thank-you for watching Bassing Into Infinity. For the *full* video, please subscribe."
Anda sangat hebat tapi juga rendah hati.. saya kagum dg anda john myung. Permainan anda sangat berkarakter sebagai suhunya master bass dunia dan permainan bass anda juga sangat cocok ngeklik dengan mike portnoy drummer... Sangat bagus.
there' s a saying in French, " La parole est d'argent; le silence est d'or". sure, the gentleman doesn't talk a lot, but dont lose your time searching for some articles about him talking trash. i believe there are none.
This one is a Tung bass, he had one around the Awake tour era. I heard only like 100 were ever made, and for that reason they're very hard to find. I saw one on eBay a few years ago but no clue where to get one now.
@Will Steckman Opinions on tone are purely subjective - one man's trash is yet another's treasure. Making a blanket statement such as "this is awful" negates any other person's opinion about matters [including John's]. There are more opinions than yours, Will. Anyone who is interested, John has one of these Tung 6 strings for sale at Bass Central in Florida.
If you want to be a better electric bass player you should also listen to upright bass players as NielsHenning Ørsted Pedersen. Its playing helped me to get a better sound.
but what most people don't know about john is that he is only aloud to speak a certain amount within a year so after this he didn't talk for a while & the wife was very upset so she has band him from doing any more instructional dvds lol
There's something sort of funny to me that half of this video is him playing stuff you could learn pretty much anywhere and over non-Dream Theater sounding backing tracks and progressions. Wish he would have covered more things that are distinctive to his style, like his three finger technique, or even just some Dream Theater riffs.
SUPERB TUTOR, Hey wait let me GRAB ME BASS OUTTA THE LIVIN ROOM.. hold on i can rewind this what's the rush... not to forget Geddy Lee haha love it spoilt for choice!
So say for the C major 7th chord patterns, he is playing C E G B In multiple positions and accentuating the Root to octave, 1-3, 1-5, 1-7, 3-octave, 3-5... Etc, etc but along with minor 7th, dominant 7th and diminished 7th chords. Is that right?
