Mr. Ogdon nails this complex piece as well as (or better than) I've ever heard. Bravo to the exceptional work from the symphony as well. Thanks so much for posting.
Obviously a great performance, but perhaps in this performance the balance between the orchestra and piano is too much biased towards the orchestra. This restricts the dynamic range available to the pianist. I saw him play the Brahms 2nd in Manchester with Halle in the 60s. The pianissimos in the 3rd (slow) movement were the best I ever heard.
@@jobod92 I remember watching John play this concerto at the Colston Hall in Bristol, and I'm sure it was 1984. I saw him in the corridor, he seemed quite nervous so I didn't approach him, though I wanted to. Such a tortured soul however will remain one of the greatest pianists of all time.
