Excellent and hats off to the luthier who built that guitar too, it has a beautiful tone, sounds like guitar, upright bass and a piano all in one guitar.. 👌
Every time I see John I think of a interview that was done with his dad and John. When Bucky was asked if he learned anything from John he replied yes what Tie to wear. Great musicians father and two sons.

MrAxSAP The pianist is Ray Kennedy--one of my heroes. Tragically, he can't play anymore, as he has multiple sclerosis. I just found this out a couple of days ago. It breaks my heart, as Ray's such a great guy and awesome player.
This song is available on John Pizzarelli's "Live at Birdland" 2-CD set - a great CD. BTW that is John's brother Martin on upright bass, and incredible pianist Ray Kennedy, who also has many recordings on CD and iTunes.
Maybe these solos are not saying what you suggest. Maybe those solos say just: "let's have fun and try to swing as hard as possible, and with the technique and the melodic creativity that we have..?"

That Bosendorfer piano has many lower notes than a regular piano. He's having a blast with that fact. Bucky's 7 string has some fat low end too. Awesome job by all of them.
Sure, John Pizzarelli's a great guitarist, and the pianist is awesome too. But are their solos great? Do those solos say: "let's listen to a great melodic or chordal interpretation of this classic tune, that will make the tune itself ring in your ears and cement it in your soul for years!" Or do they say: "Check out my technique!"
Perhaps the most ridiculously over the top & over played "solo" you will ever hear. Pizzarelli needs to work on his massive ego as much as he works his chops. I don't have the words for the piano player.
Anyone who has actually met John and his dad Bucky, as I have, find them to be the most no ego and gracious musicians on the planet. True gentlemen who are a joy to be around.
I really like John P's playing and jazz singing but I must confess I lost the melody line during his long finger style solo. Usually I'm always able to hear it in my head as improvising goes on but not on this number. Great chops but I don't know what he was playing.
Study then, it was rythmically a beast of a solo, maybe the melody wasn't there, but its really important to try follow it by the rythm, not just the notes, and you will enjoy it equally.
