I was searching for him in the web for years (as i understood his name introduced by Sco as "Ritschie Celestion" on the same tour shown here in Bremen then) - now I finally know his real name 😃 yeah - great drummer !!
Setlist w/ time cues: ~ Protocol - 0:00 ~ Thanks Again - 10:05 ~ Rule of Thumb - 20:15 ~ Trim - 33:30 ~ Georgia on my Mind (solo guitar) - 48:15 ~ The Nag - 57:03 ~ 10th movement (encore) - 1:06:40
A month after this show I was fortunate enough to see him at the JVC Jazz Fest in Newport with this same lineup!! INSANE overall lineup that day that included John Scofield Band, Michael Franks, Stanley Jordan and the headliner of the day was the one and only MILES DAVIS!!! One of the many highlights of my life!! But after seeing Scofield, I was a fan ever since!!!!
Nothing inspires me more, to keep practicing guitar, everyday than anything else. He is so unique in tone, phrasing....note choice and just so insanely Himself. Thats just the pinnacle of awesome.
Thanks a lot for sharing this exceptional concert ! Sco is one of my favorite, ans among other, he deals with the rare talent of choosing the right alchemists to accompany him on every project along his prolix and unestimable artistic pathway.
I thank all the Jazz Fusion Artists I’ve listened to over the years. The creators (MD, RTF, WR, HH, ETC.) Also the 2nd & 3rd generation Fusion guys who are keeping the genre alive. If not for WR’s “Birdland” and other greats; and RTF’s awesome work, I would never have gotten into any of the Jazz Greats. Now for years I have been enjoying both Fusion & Jazz. Thanks to all of you! Djalimo Djalimo. ❤❤❤
Not a competition. When someone is at this level, they are expected to be top of the line. I enjoy listening to both unique styles without comparisons.
I witnessed this concert. My advice: turn up the bass, the deeper octaves , Play it loud and groove along! It does justice to all the doublers and base kick used in this setup. Bad ass concert.
John Abercombie is often related to Scofield, how good this man was and resembled Scofield, When this fusion music is played, it is for me not so difficult where it's origins lie...The Fusion period of SWcofield...let us never forget this period...
Is that Marc Copland on keys? I ask because it looks like him and I know his real surname is 'Cohen'. He played an awesome piano solo on 'Trim' staring at 38:50. Great quartet.
Yeah, he seems kinda irritated when the cameramen are filming him holding his guitar during another players solo. John is one of my favorite guitarists second only to maybe McLaughlin.
Met Grainger in Berkeley, Early 90's on a hotel gig, I was Struggling with a Supreemley Arrogant keyboard player, (Who's Talent was Negligible, at Best,) Gary was VERY Kind,.."U Sound Good, man," (Yea, Right..!) He and the Drummer were at the bar, Apparently, on Tour..the Drummer U All know, AWESOME, Funkadelic, Mcglaughlin, Whoever! was NOT so Kind, (He Didn't Say a Thing..) Years Later, I found out G.Clinton wasn't paying him!! So, I NOW, years later, WHY he Wasn't in the MOOD!! Those moments are Priceless!!
Spoke to Dennis in Leeds and he was friendly but quiet in the 80s at the record store part of the gig (an enthusiast) but at the time I had no understanding how good Gary grainger was , thanks for the memories , best wishes !
and don't forget that Daryl Jones and Omar Hakim where (resp.) the Bass player and drummer of this sttudio project Scofield with Omar Hakim is nowhere to find live...with Daryl Jones there is(+ Michael Chambers)
Yeah. Sco was tasty as long ago as when he played with Billy Cobham. He's definitely tasty at this concert as well, but I don't think that he REALLY hit his stride until the '90s and his EVERYBODY'S PARTY "period", and subsequent stuff during the noughties with Herbie, Mike Brecker and Jack deJohnette. I can here, stylistically, a few if Sco's "pre-cliches" leading up to EVERYBODY'S PARTY itself!! Many thanks for sending. 👍 😎
i'd agree that he definitely put out his hottest fusion stuff in the 2nd half of the eighties :-) however I'm a massive fan of Sco with Medesky-Martin-Woods, also more recent sco playing standards and the stuff with Bill Stewart is absolutely phenomenal. also uberjam, organ trio...
@@alexmuscalu8439 True to that, but I kinda miss the more brash, in-your-face style of then - And mind you, I never minded the chorused tone he had back then (and which irked and fostered some detractors). Even back then, in comparison to other guys, Sco knew about 'understatement', but he'd burn the house down quite often too. Nowadays he plays w/ even more space in his solos, makes much more use of long tones that previously and he has long since ditched the chorus pedal. However, personally speaking I find his tone/guitar timbre a bit too dry nowadays, too devoid of reverb. IMO he had a nice 'compromising tone' circa 2000 when he recorded 'Bump' - no chorus effect, but still a bit of reverb in his rig. It seems to me that he barely uses any reverb - if any at all. But he still has the same unique core musical personality as before.
The only problem I have with John's playing, usually, are his mouth movements. But also, in this concert he is playing a Gibson which seems to lack the growl of his usual playing on an Ibanez, which to me is definitive of JS. He is one of my favourite guitarists, along with John McLaughlin .
@@blerkh Yes, I know now after some investigation of Ibanez. The cable jack position made me think 'Gibson', although I should have taken into consideration the shape of the 'cutaways' which are Ibanez shaped.
@@blerkh Not so easy! I almost wrote in my previous comment that the headstock information was very blurred on my screen. I was also very tried when I was watching it, but being JS I found it difficult to stop.
I am pretty sure this is just post- miles davis scofield's play. I can see the others musicians dont follow to Sco, maybe jealous. In the music world, you know...but he wons!
yes, in fact Scofield was playing on that 'stage' (NSJ 'Garden Pavilion') with Miles, the previous year. Robben Ford was playing with Miles on this same stage in '86. I was lucky to be there for both events.
Horrible. 😖 Sorry...but it IS. At least players like Metheny and McLaughlin incorporate "melody relief" in their atonal playing. This is just horrible chromatic dissonance for the sake of it. 🙄😖
