Had the pleasure of seeing him perform last night. Got to meet him afterwards -- he grabbed my hand in both of his and shook it. What a nice, warmhearted man, and great performer, songwriter and storyteller. And a way better guitarist than I had ever realized.
John, I am addicted to this concert to bring sanity and love into this present world of insanity and tyranny and sickness. God bless you for then and now.
This is a beautiful human being. He really enjoys playing for the people and playing around with them. You can feel the love that flows from him at the end when he comes out just to say thank you and" We'll get together again and play some more". He really means it.
Saw him live at Harvard stadium around this time. Just missed him at Woodstock. John Sebastian is one of those few artists who can remind you of how great life can be, bitter or sweet. Some people live forever and I know he will.
Great gig. John always put on a fine show and with his likeable personality and wonderful songs he always seemed to succeed in making the audience feel involved. A great songwriter and performer and terribly under-rated.
I saw John a month before this show in Anaheim, California and he was just as care free and happy as this show. Years later in the 80s I was working for a night club in Monterey, Ca. that he was performing at and he invited my wife and I into his dressing room to hang out before the show. We talked about Woodstock and all sorts of cool folks he'd worked with among other things. A very down to Earth Peaced Out kind of guy...... Great Vibes!
as a father and grandfather I find myself quoting John's words " and what's the matter daddy, how come you're turning green? Can it be that you can't live up to your dreams?" from Younger Generation... as a baby boomer we started out with such dreams and then screwed everything up..sorry.
I saw John in 1984 at a venue called the Old Post Office on Hilton Head Island in SC. It was a fantastic concert. He was perfect!. He played for 2 hrs and 2 encores. He is a truly talented musician in every sense of the word.
I saw John on August 15, 1970 at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. This brings back pleasant memories of that night. It felt like we all in John's living room hanging out, listening to him sing a song for us. It was a magical night, for sure, and a good reminder of the days when we were all connected in love.
Does anyone remember him on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson? Around '70, or '71. He came on stage with his guitar and stopped in the middle of a song, put down his guitar, reached into his front pocket, pulled out a harmonica and started blowing it. Then he stopped, put the harmonica back into his pocket, picked up his guitar and ended the song. Man, that performance turned me into a big-time John B. Sebastian fan! A girlfriend gave me the "Cheapo-Cheapo..." 8-track for my 18th birthday. What memories this brings back.
THERE ARE ONLY, basically, A HANDFUL of artists/ ENTERTAINERS & PERFORMERS that CAN step out on a stage, in FRONT of a LARGE audience & CAPTIVATE each & EVERY ONE OF THEM THAT THEY ARE just playin' FOR THEM...JOHN SEBASTIN is ONE of those ARTISTS & MORE...
About twenty years ago, I was at a Summer shopper's days in downtown Concord, NH. They close off the main street and people just walk around eating and buying things. In the midst of the crowd, I heard a Lovin' Spoonful song being sung just the way it should be. I looked over and there was John Sebastian sitting on a metal folding chair surrounded by the dozen or so people who recognized him. Just sitting there doing what he loved to do for whoever wanted to listen. That always comes back to me when I think of him.
When I see John perform, I see a musician who has spent many hard years perfecting his craft, and who is finally proud to show the world the product of a noble life spent spreading the message of love. Fucking inspiring.
I never ever paid much attention to this artist back in the day. I was only 12 when this concert aired but I came across this video while scrolling on youtube and i'm glad I did. His songs are so cheerful and relaxing. I will be listening to him more often now.

Excellent! No bells and whistles, just a pure concert of music & song with a beloved artist. Today there are such big productions, you have to wonder if you'll hear the music and song over the pyrotechnics and other special effects. Save the F/X for the flicks, let me hear those vocals.
I saw this guy live and solo in a beautiful little theatre near my hometown and he is still the only artist ive ever seen live who made me weep stone cold sober
John is one of the happiest people in the world; look at him, after the Lovin Spoonful success and then his appearance at Woodstock, 69. He sure looks happy to me.
Toby it was called drugs.. this is the 70's son.. we were all stoned back then!.. But I do think your right.. seeing him these days he still can smile a lot..
one guy and a guitar playing those great post-spoonful songs really take us back to a very special time in our lives and the kid from greenwich village really as much as any other musician from that time gave us the soundtrack for so many adventures loves parties that'll be around forever...
Thanks for posting this. He was in his prime here, great voice, guitarist and he looked good too. Darlin Be Home Soon, Younger Generation, Magical Connection - he wrote some gems. A Found A Dream, Daydream, I Had a Dream - he likes songs about dreams!
I love John! I went to 6 of his concerts in the early '70s in upstate New York. I always went by myself as I didn't want to share with anybody else. So thank you for putting more of his work out there. Princess's Warriors
Kate Red The last song is "Darlin' Be Home Soon" I've always loved this one. It was also covered by Joe Crocker on the "Joe Cocker" album. (Not quite as softly though)
@@larrythomas6983 still a great version and you wouldn't expect Joe to sing it in the same manner. Lots of great covers on the same record well worth getting hold of
We used to listen to albums in our high school art class in 1969-70 in Virginia and John's albums, especially the Cheapo Cheapo one were played a lot. We had a great teacher and we learned a lot. Thanks!
I went to various shows at Tanglewood betwen 69 and 71 with my summer camp in The Berkshires. I'm still discovering shows that we didn't go to, this being one of them. John is always great!
Wow... How great... Saw him live in NJ around 1974... ALSO love CHEAPO CHEAPO PRODUCTIONS presents... played that LP until I wore it out... Found it on iTunes the other day... This has been a real John Sebastian week.... Enjoy this concert.. its great!
I had a book of his music that I use to play on the piano somebody stole it and have never found another. Songs like "I'm a going Fishing" and all of his different types of music.
I finally got a turntable again and now am listening to my albums. One of the first I pulled out was John Sebastian's Tarzana Kid, which led me to look him up to see what he's up to these days which led me here. Wonderful performance, such great songs! Thanks for posting this, very much enjoying it!
I'm so glad this was posted - the performance of "Darling Be Home Soon" at the end is one of the most magical performances I've ever heard. Something special.
Yayhay! Thank you so much for posting this gem. I, too, have the album 'Cheapo-Cheapo Productions Presents..' It was part of the soundtrack for my teeeeenage years. Love John Sebastian (&The LS).
You're A Big Boy Now was written for movie by the same name directed by..ready for this??? Francis Ford Coppola. Search and ye shall find..start with RU-vid--very funny movie
John's blues fingerpickin' roots, really shine through on the opening number...great stuff! The man's truly hip, mentioning the great Lonnie Johnson, (from New Orleans). Check out that beautiful acoustic he's playin; abalone inlay, a cutaway, (you didn't see many of those back then), two pickups & 4 tone controls...in his hands, it's all magic! You gotta love artists that readily confess to not knowing what their art is about...the great Gary Larson of the Far Side fame, comes to mind. He has this intimate, off-the-cuff thing that almost takes you to the washroom, (sorry, just kiddin).
I loved the Spoonfull, and in the disappointment of their breakup I just didn't properly appreciate John Sebastian as a solo artist. This concert shows him to be that rare artist who can captivate with just voice and guitar. He radiates/communicates positive emotion. Thankful I got to see see him with the Lovin Spoonful in 1967.
Mark8395217 he was the best performer I ever saw , saw him in the early 70’s in Rochester , than again about 10 years ago in Saratoga he and his music is so uplifting, warm and personal Thanks John

I saw him at Northeastern U on that tour. It was more like seeing him in a living room than a concert. He made you feel like that concert was special to him.
vid guy is a bit stoned... damn, really stoned.. old rock and roll heads.. yup that is for sure.. Son, son, son.. those were the days.. endless summers a time when work still interrupted life.. when hangin' out with friends was better than just about anything except camping with them or maybe a road trip.. no vid games, no social media, no cell phone.. just good friends, great adventures and good times.. oh yeah and for some of us it was "dragin' the gut" on friday night... But I think that was a west coast thing.. at least in the north west... thanks John! thanks for the memories now..
This was shot by a friend of Bill Graham's, not exactly professional, and then sycned with the soundboard of John's concert. Doesn't have the seamless editing of the others shows posted from Tanglewood 1970 (Miles Davis, The Who, Jethro Tull, Chicago), but we're lucky to have it nonetheless.
+Tony Goiburn I'm not so sure it is (I looooved that album) but this doesn't have Goodnight Irene or Nashville Cats. Nevertheless, I'm so enjoying listening to it again and again and again!!
What a sweet sweet man! Luv his vibe. I had the album "Cheapo Cheapo Productions Present Real Live John Sebastian" and I loved it. I lent it to someone years ago and of course, never got it back! Thanks for posting this!!!!
