Teaming with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham (of Buckingham Nicks and, later, Fleetwood Mac), Stewart recorded and released Bombs Away Dream Babies, which included the #5 hit, "Gold," in 1979.
I agree! I'm now 63, a HS Grad in 78', and wow- do I ever miss 70's too! It's hard to explain, but it seemed from 77'-81' there WAS a certain sound...a bit more percussion etc maybe from Gold(this), up to ie.Rick James type early songs out. I can't put a pin in it, in part bc I'm no muscician...but I know when there was a convergence of typical radio/pop tunes the likes of Gloria Estaphan to lesser knowns like James',Patrice Rushen(Forget-Me-Nots)etc.; while Disco was dying, M*TV had started(80'), and Micheal Jackson hadn't yet done his 83' moonwalk ❗I know I took it for granted that great voices, lyrics etc...especially Ballads: a 'story within a song' you could both hear AND comprehend, would carry-on... but saddly, that hasn't been the case@@kenklein9228
I got to meet Mr. Stewart years ago and as I had hoped he was a gentleman of the first order. When I mentioned I was raised on a ranch in central California he acted like he had met a long lost friend. For years I had been fan so this was a special moment in my life. I also met his lovely wife Buffy Ford. It's only recently I learned that Kanan was not a metaphorical reference to some promised land...like musical success...but a real road LOL. I truly miss that man. There will never be another John Stewart.
The summer of 79. Man, I was 15 walking on the beach in Ocean City Maryland and met a cute girl visiting her grandmother. She was from California. This song hit the charts at exactly the same time and I adopted it. Even today it takes me back to that innocent time and my first "girlfriend". I had to leave the next day, but to me, it was real love, lol.
Brother, I hear ya!!! I was in OC in ‘79 also! I was 11. They would play this great music on the boardwalk and by the Himalaya!! Innocence and fun abound.
I’m 27 and worked at Walmart and they played this song every morning. Always been a Stevie nicks fan and I never knew this existed. Whatever I was doing when it came on I’d be grooving no matter my mood.
This was the kind of song you'd hear on AM radio, late at night on a long car journey, back in 1979. The reception was never good, but even from the back seat it still sounded awesome.
It reminds me off listening to the US Top 30 while cleaning, or tinkering with my motorcycle in the driveway on Saturday, I too didn't realize I was in paradise.
@@angelynx1prime It gives me chills too as it takes me back to a wonderful time in my life before cares, responsibilities, disappointments and concerns encroached on my life.
John Stewart hated the fact that the song became so commercialized ....he was forced to make that album for the record company and make it commercial ...he was a more folky kind of a guy but he had signed a contract and there you have it ' bombs away dream babies'...I'm glad he did as I love the album and can never get enough of this song .
I had the privilege of meeting and photographing John at Trancas in Malibu. He invited me to his home to look at the images and he ended up purchasing most of them. Needless to say, I was thrilled. John was a member of the Kingston Trio and I had been a long time fan! I also photographed some of his paintings for exhibition and he ended up using several shots teen at Trancas for one of his CD's. I miss him and his immeasurable talent.
In the 70s, I prayed for a woman like Stevie Nicks to come into my life. As they say, be careful what you wish for. She nearly drove me to my grave. lol. Good times.
It has a haunting tone and there's Stevie Nick's and they're really poking a finger in the eye of the music industry. Ah the 70s couple other good songs on the album as well.
1971 and 1979 were unreal. 1971 was right after the Beatles and other bands broke up and 1979 was soon after Elvis died and around the time disco declined. Interesting, energetic and transformational decade.
@@marknewton6984 Yes, that's the year they came to America, hard to believe they split only 6 years later, in 1970, around the time Simon and Garfunkel and also, Crosby Stills as well, disbanded. 60 years ago almost since the Beatles came to New York. Time flies. 1964 was quite a time, a musically drive morale boost after the JFK era ending abruptly. So much talent in the British Invasion bands and by the 1970s it really soaked into the culture around the world. The Beatles did not write the very best individual songs ever, but came darn close, and their overall success just can't be matched ever, as gifted as groups like the the Stones are
@@jerryl9823 Brilliant observations!! They were pivotal years of my life - on the cusp of an epoch in both instances, and music certainly shaped the outlook of my future.
Me and my buddies from Toronto went to Columbus Ohio in the summer of 79 and this song was played on all the AM music stations. We got hooked. We had a wonderful time in Columbus and met a lot of nice folk. I still sing this song to myself on warm summer evenings as the sun starts to go down.
I heard this song while I was in home Depot this evening. It sounded familiar so let Google listen and found it. Good song to play on a loud clean sounding stereo.
You know how sometimes a song that you heard in your childhood never seems to leave you? Well, this is "that" song for me. 1978. And, as an 8 year old, it just stuck with me, and thank's MsMovieThemes, for posting such a good audio version.
I loved the line "my buddy Jim Bass he's a workin' pumpin' gas and he makes 2.50 for an hour. it reminded me of the day in l979 that I got l0 dollars worth of gas in Hudson, NH and the attendant gave me back a 20 dollar bill. I said this must be a mistake you gave me too much back...to which he replied, "this is my last day here. I hate this job, I hate my boss, so I'm giving the money away!"
One of the greatest late 1970s songs. I admit to being a pothead and druggie at the time this song was often played during my foolish episodes. Am not justifying my behavior at the time, but this song evokes memories of a time in my life when I had fewer worries and responsibilities. Plus my Mom was alive at the time, and I miss her dearly.
I love that Stevie Nicks sings in this song. It's a good fit for her. This song is a masterpiece that has largely been forgotten. Hopefully this video will help people to rediscover it.
I always liked this song since the year it came out. Even though Stewart is awesome on his own, Nick's voice in the somg compliments him well. Unfortunately, Stewart hated this song. He called vapid crap and refused to perform the song anymore.
I twirled around in my backyard to this song when I was 12, I had no idea I would fall madly in love with Stevie as I did....she was my childhood fairy!!
Not to mention John Stewart! He's long since passed (08' I believe) but when I saw the pic of him they put up on MusicChoice (TV) 70's & also some here on RU-vid I hadn't realized how handsome he was at the time.... brought me here!
Picture this..hot summer night...cruising the open road as it stretches endlessly out in front of you..your girl sitting next to you...listening to this with the quiet rumble of a V8 in the background and other great songs from this time as you drive along and forget the world and all it's worries and cares and you lose yourself in the moment...any takers?
Lol..neither am I...I'm from Australia but we have plenty of long open roads here that are perfect for doing this :-) (and after California dreaming finishes it's followed by 'Hot Summer Nights' by night )
Your description of the open road etc., also makes me think of another video for a 70's song I saw here on RU-vid, from 3-Dog Night I believe... the song 'Out in the Country'... check it out!
This is the feel good music that I grew up with on my FM/AM Panasonic radio, and I love the blending of the music and the video with lyrics!! Awesomeness!!
This song brings back memories when I went out to LA for work for a summer while in college. It was playing on the radio as I was coming down through the mountains when I was approaching LA from the north on my way to a place I was going to stay in Long Beach.
this song is great on a whole bunch of levels, 1st the instrumentation, 2nd it`s not about romance, 3rd it`s a rallying cry for anyone not capitalizing on talent.
Didn’t know he passed away . Just recently discovered this song . Absolutely love Gold . They were indeed. Must been something back in the day . People out there turning music into gold 🎼🎼
i actually feel very sorry for young people who didnt get to experience the 70s. it was america's peak man! i was 9, huffin' glue cuz we didn't know better, roller skatin to this and all the other GREAT music around. On saturday mornings they actually showed 3 straight hours of cartoons(not infomercials) and at the end of the night ALL 3 stations played the national anthem, which told you to get your ass in bed! and all those people you loved were still alive
Yup! Felt it, Lived it, Loved it... I was a 78' Highschool grad. But just like now, life was taken for granted. There was the good & the bad, mostly good for younger people like I was at the time... and I recall my folks and their friends all uptight about Watergate/Nixon,price of gas, pollution, and Vietnam earlier in decade... but the Music was awesome!! ...we just didnt know it at the time! I guess everyone just assumed musical talents, songwriters, and the industry & music educators actually CARING to put out good stuff would just continue... despite the then-parental and other adult objections & typical "You'd never have heard this, you call this music, when I was younger" comments, just like admittedly I have bitched about some of the nonsense rap,hip-hop,useless pop,and LaLa crap... void of decent melodys or ballads that IS out nowadays! I guess every generation brings a new perspective, matures, then looks back in hindsight to "The Good Old Days"! But seriously, there IS talent now, but not enough who make the effort, that coulda~shoulda~woulda lol, be able to create good classic music like this song is!!
Just got reintroduced to this song today..I love this song...hadn't heard it in 20 or so years..I had no idea Fleetwood Mac members helped out..but now I know why I loved it..I LOVE Fleetwood Mac..always have..Stevie singing..Lindsey on guitar..Oh yeah..BTW the Solid Gold version is freakin HOT!..
@@edwardmiller3110: Actually they had met Mick by then. The Fleetwood Mac LP "Tusk" was released probably near the time of "Gold." Lindsey and Stevie would have been in Fleetwood Mac about five years by then.
This song was part of the soundtrack of my childhood and you nailed it's spirit spot on. I clicked like in the first 3 or four images. Thank you for posting.
Great! I love this song! If you are heading towards Sacramento on I-5; you will never find Kanan Rd. It runs from US 101 at the far west end of Los Angeles County, over the Santa Monica Mountains and winds up at the Pacific Ocean at Malibu.
This song makes me wish my BMW was a convertible because this is the type of song that you have blaring from the car stereo on a warm summers evening as your cruising through LA and Hollywood! And yes "California girls are the greatest in the world" I know, I'm one of them! =)
FINALLY after humming this song in my head for the last 15 minutes....than came a part of the lyric " he has rthymn in his hands as he's tapping on the can" next came "turning music into gold" got me here. Thank you for posting this song brings back my high school years.
I was listening to "Hippie Radio" here in Nashville last week and this song came on and It's been in my head ever since. Even in the middle of the night when I have to get up and pee, this song is going through my head while I'm peeing. This kind of thing happens with me. I get obsessed with a certain song and it stays on my mind for weeks at a time. Last summer it was "Help Me" by Joni Mitchell that I heard on the radio one day last June. I immediately went on RU-vid and found some videos of Joni doing "Help Me" and everyday for several months, I had to get on the tube and watch Joni do it. I just got past that obsession, and now here is John Stewart getting me obsessed with "Gold."
Ahh, summer of 1979. Just got my drivers license and remember driving through the small California town rocking to this tune. Yes California Girls are the greatest in the world, except my mother who grew up in Idaho.
I have always loved this tune, I don't care what type of music you like this one gets you moving, I'll bet even the Grand Leader of Iran couldn't sit still while this was playing.
I can remember, being in a friends pool when I was about 12, listening to this song play on the radio, It was so cool to swim to music , this song and "Dreams"-Fleetwood Mac, gives me such feels...
SweetManilaRose, or whoever, thanks for this video! I remember when this first was a hit, at the time I didn’t know who John Stewart was. Former member of the Kingston Trio, a wonderful musician! RIP, John Stewart, we thank you!
