John Wesley Hardin: Dark Angel of Texas

In November of 1868 - at just the tender age of fifteen - John Wesley Hardin killed his first man. And, a few weeks later, he’d kill yet again; this time, three soldiers who came looking for him. Fearing a hangman’s noose, Wes struck first, dispatching two troopers with a shotgun and finishing the third with an old cap and ball colt. And you better believe the hits just kept on coming. Before it was all said and done, Hardin would be responsible for anywhere between twenty to possibly as many as fifty killings, each of which - according to him - were justifiable. But how true is that? Was John Wesley Hardin a persecuted hero or a homicidal killer? How’d the son of a minister become one of the deadliest gunmen of the Old West? And did he REALLY kill someone just for snoring? Also discussed are Wild Bill Hickok, the Bloody Bender family, the Sutton-Taylor Feud, and John Selman Sr.
*This is a compilation of a previously released series. My apologies to those who've heard it, but I experienced a few setbacks this past week due to a dadgum hurricane! Do not despair; brand-new content is coming your way next Wednesday!* #wildwest #history #western

Big fan of your content Josh and my fandom is getting bigger and bigger. I dont want this to sound rude, but i listen to you to fall asleep.... I listen to Paul Cooper (Fall Of Civilizations), Pete Kelly (History Time) and your channel. Obviously, they cover ancient history mostly, and yours is a lot more recent, but I love all things history..... I have trouble falling asleep. My mind races all over the place unless I am listening to intriguing content and top shelf narrators. You three gentlemen have both of those things. Thanks to you guys, I do end up falling asleep, but the next night I pull up the same video and find the last part I remembered hearing before I drifted off and continue listening. Just wanna say "thank you, Josh." I have recently subscribed and I look forward to more awesome content. Saving this one for tonight and if all goes well, I will finish it tomorrow night!!

We still have homes and buildings that were built in the 1870's and 1880's still standing I would like to say that your the most authentic and honest storyteller about the old west. I can tell you do a lot of research digging up the facts on person or people your talking about I'm going to become a paying remember today. Ah! You’re to the point about Dixon. That’s who he’s with throughout the aforementioned book. That’s why it fooled me at first, it lists all of his ‘transgressions’ in a bit more detail, in story form. Have to admit it was pretty entertaining…may have to take another listen now that you’ve scratched that JWH itch. That dude was pretty smart …and pretty cray cray!

I may be inclined to believe someone who tells me theyve killed a man in self defense once in their life. As long as it's believable right? But someone says they've killed 2 guys in self defense I immediately don't believe them. Either they've not killed or it wasn't in self defense. 20+ people.... There's no way. Even back in those days I just don't believe you'd be put in a spot to kill a man THAT many times. Idk if he's trying to convince others, the judge or himself.

Was Hardin a Persecuted hero or Homicidal maniac? I suspect the truth is somewhere in between. He probably started off as abit of a hot head growing up on a time and placed where getting in trouble was easy. Then he may have gotten to willing to live that life. And probably mean when drinking.

In 1868 a cap n ball Colt would not be considered 'old ' it was very much current technology as cartridge pistols were not yet available. The Smith and Wesson no3 of 1869 being 1st along with cartridge conversions of colt 1860s in 1871 along with newly made Colt 1871/72 'open tops' .

Hardin used a ivory grip nickel plated s&w #3 American in 44 American and unique El Paso saddlery co holster with six cartridge loops in pairs of two going straight down the holster In fact, El Paso saddlery co is still producing that that same holster today he also used this gun to kill deputy Charlie Webb along side a defected worn out colt 1860 army the barrel and cylinder had such a large gap in between them, the gun would not fire unless you were Manually pulling the cylinder into the cylinder wall with your off hand amazingly, this was his favorite gun which really drives home the fact that he was a very good shootist possibly better than Hickok God I’m gonna catch a lot of guff for saying that
