Mzyxplx gaming No, the movie is not based on the novel. You are most likely talking about the novelization of the movie. It's a common thing. Many many movies have novelisations of them. Some are even written before the movie has been completed or while the movie is being filmed. The novels follows the same plot and characters except it has a lot more details. Sometimes those details actually explain any plotholes from the films.

Well maybe john escaped. He mentions being abandoned or something, so maybe that. Then from around mexico in teen years he grows up and joins the marines, after he hunts down those gangsters then joins the guild.

This version of John is more dangerous than the one in the movies, especially due to better feats in strength, endurance, speed, combat and pain tolerance (receiving direct shots in the chest is something superhuman and here John receives them as if it were nothing) . The antagonists of the films should be happy that they did not have to face John Wick in his prime since apparently in the prequel comic this version of the character would have had fewer problems defeating characters like Cassian, Zero, Caine, Chidi or Killa.

How did John Wick had a comic and origin story when Keanu himself came up with the original script / draft that he sent to Chad the director? If this truly exists, then it's a spinoff comics inspired or based on the John Wick movies, but not the real origin story. Cause if there will be an origin story, Keanu and Chad and the people they'll hire will be the ones who will write it.
