About Stax Records
Stax Records, now owned by Concord/Craft Recordings, was founded by Jim Stewart in 1957 in Memphis, Tennessee. It rose from a small, family-operated company to become one of the most influential soul music record labels in the world, helping create “The Memphis Sound” and launching the careers of icons such as Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, the Staple Singers, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas, The Bar-Kays, and dozens of other artists who helped change popular culture forever. In all, Stax placed 167 hit songs in the Top 100 in Pop and 243 hits in the Top 100 in R&B.
Stax Records works closely with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, the Stax Music Academy, and The Soulsville Charter School, all operated by the Soulsville Foundation and all located on a vibrant campus at the original site of Stax Records in Memphis, TN. The Soulsville Foundation perpetuates the soul of Stax Records by preserving its rich cultural legacy, educating youth to be prepared for life success, and inspiring future artists to achieve their dreams.

I played this music to my 85-year-old. She was sleeping in the hospital and nursing home . When I went back to see her, she was sitting in her wheelchair ,there's my oldest daughter, called out my name. I was so happy and blessed that she remembered everything ❤️. Played Johnny Taylor and dancing in the streets New Orleans music 🎶. She was moving her head side way. She asked for more ice water from dehydrated for almost a month or more. ❤ She is talking. Enjoy your elderly parents because you are going to miss them when they are gone.

I loved this song the minute I heard it on the radio in 1973. I went out & bought it as soon as I saved enough of my allowance. Seems like I remember you could get a 45 rpm single for about 45 cents. I was probably the only white girl in my school who'd bought this record, but I didn't care, because I knew good music when I heard it. I've always had a soft spot in my heart for rhythm & blues, & this song is a classic. Of course, I love Johnnie Taylor's soulful voice, but I also love it when the female backup singers come in - like icing on a cake.

If the music you listen to the most doesn’t invoke you to think and feel deeply about yourself.....your life....to face what reality is for you and inspire you to be your best and overcome all adversity......then that explains why you might be lost and confused about yourself. Music like this song and or what is massively referred to as “real music”, was predominantly produced in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s because one of the reasons, it was practical to learn how to play an instrument, especially becoming a self taught instrumentalist. The devotion to producing, creating and making music was greater than the desire for fame and money, these artists put their heart and soul into being the best and created volumes of timeless, priceless music, so vast that it seems like they completed what music is and ‘should be’, it’s not old school, or whatever category the industry wants to label it.......no it’s simply what music is suppose to be, why, because it’s The Best of humwoman expression musically, the 60’s, 70’s, 80’s and some 90’s......and a little bit of 2000’s. That’s my perspective.

I love this song, JOHNNIE TAYLOR. The verse of your “mother said loving me made no sense, but, when n she put me down you stood up for me”.I have to say the exact incident happened to me. My mom tried to stop me from the one that I loved but I said I couldn’t because I believed in us.

I grew up listening to this ole soul music, family cookout's. Auntie's, Uncle's, and Cousins all around, us running around. And the older one's playing the record's, and sippin on Canadian Mist. Getting "tore" up, talking trash, and reminiscing. But "NEVER", arguing, or disrupting the mood. 60 years old, and those memories I still hold close, just like the "true", ole'skool music. Make you think of the "GOOD" OLE DAY'S, drop a few tear's, for the one's the Lord has called home. Shake ma head and smile, for the late nights sitting on the front porch. Listening to Blue Monday, woo woo wooing and girl on the phone. Awwwwww "SHOOT", bring those day's back👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾👊🏾💪🏾💪🏾💯💯

I am still looking for this kind of love. I'm 67 and the music if the 60s and 70s did something inside of me that I have never been able to shake, and my desire for it is still strong. Men made their women fell wanted, and women took care of their men in every way possible in the music of our day. Maybe this is the reason today's generation don't have the same love and respect for one another that we were programmed with through the music of our generations.

Me too. 70 year old poor white trash. I was raised to listen to country music; which I don’t regret, but man you can’t just pass this beautiful, really better music. I swear sometimes I just don’t understand my race. We need to get rid of this f#@ked up rap shit and stanken assed, what they are trying to pass off as country. By the way, where’s our good old time gospel???
