The traditions/rituals with whiskey/wine/pipes is what drew me to you channels you get the nerdiness of Daniel and his quest to know all there is about his passions and rex's shennanigans are a perfect combo. I found I liked the ritual to absinthe then got into pipe smoking and wines, now whiskies thanks to my pops and daniel and Rex.

That had bad news written all over it at the end. I guess Daniel wanted to add fireeater to the resume.

Is there anything this man doesn't know. Daniel is a great teacher. Ty for schooling me in pipes. When I was little I use to hang out with my grandfather while he smoked his pipes and I loved the smell of the smoke as it rolled off the bowl. Sometimes when he was out of the room i would pick up a pipe and pretend i was smoking it. I also remember opening the tobacco pouch to smell it fresh. Now I'm starting to get into pipe smoking and whiskey. Great video guys.

Perusing old episodes, I was happy to find this one. I’ve been matching pipe tobaccos, whiskies, and sometimes coffees for the past 30 years. I love a good cigar but, in general, for my tastes, pipe tobaccos better compliment whiskies. Pipe-smoking mechanics are daunting or annoying for some beginners but, if one sticks with the practice, those rituals can enhance the experience.

I'm the same way. I enjoy the ritual of smoking a pipe more than smoking a cigar, and when you get the pairing just right it's absolutely wonderful.

Thank you for this video. As an avid pipe smoker, I have found that developing my palette for tobacco provided a desire to develop my whiskey palette. I find both hobbies to be similar in relaxation and enjoyment. Nice job on a quick intro to pipe smoking and on selecting three varieties of tobaccos. Lighting a pipe with flaming whiskey is probably not the best idea but it was entertaining.

I smoke pipes every chance I get, and I rarely smoke a bowl around people who don't immediately rave about how good it smells. Once a lady walked bast me and after a few steps she turned around. I thought she was going to yell at me (I was in a non smoking ares, but there were cigarette butts all over the ground so I didn't think anyone would really care) But instead she said that it smelled like her uncles and grandpa and thanked me for bringing back those memories. The moral of the story is that pipes are superior and even non smokers don't mind being around you while you smoke. Also, I started smoking pipes before cigars and I love the ritual as you put it. it sucks when I am in a hurry and want one to relax, but overall, it is part of the relaxation.

Welcome! There's a lot of great resources out there. I'd recommend going to the pipe tobacco subreddit, they're friendly and have a lot of great insight. Take a look at Missouri Meerschaum corn cobs, they're a crowd favorite and highly recommended for both starter pipes and for cob aficionados. After that, get a few ounces of different types of tobaccos and explore all it has to offer! A lot of beginners smoke aromatics since they smell nice, but they can be a bit troublesome at times. Don't be afraid to try bolder tobaccos!

Thank you for this episode! My dad smokes pipes and has since he was a teen. He’s 74 now. And nothing smells as good as when he opens a new tin of tobacco. I think that’s why Bruichladdich ‘classic laddie’ is my favorite whisky. The finish at the end reminds me of that tobacco smell. Awesome episode 👍🏻

Ah the World Cup was on in Texas, wow! I remember watching an antiques programme years ago, and there was this tiny tiny little pipe on it. The Japanese have/had pipes where you only used one or two puffs and that was it, you either refilled or stopped, just like having a 2 minute rest, really cool. You can see this on old episodes of the tv series of Zatoichi - which is worth a watch in itself, because why wouldn't you watch a series about a blind master swordsman! :D

There was a lot here that was arguably wrong about pipe smoking, but i'm only going to "correct" one thing. Cobs can last a long time. The forum is dead now, but someone did an experiment to see exactly how many smokes it could withstand. After like 1500 or 1600 smokes he sent it around to others on the forum to smoke. Sadly it was lost, but i think it got to almost 2k smokes through it, and as far as i know, was still going strong. The same guy has restarted the experiment just recently with another cob, this one i think is a discontinued old style though. The guy also smoked like 50 bowls a week or so on average through the experiment, if i remember right.

Oh nice!...Cigars get most of the attention, but I really only smoke a pipe. I prefer the gentlemanly way of making friends, and I like that you can't just hurry, but that there is ritual and method in that more contemplative genre of smoking. Piping is the thinking man's/woman's way.

You mentioned Gandalf. In a side note, J.R.R Tolkien was a pipe smoker, and he spoked Three Nuns. (Although from what I've heard what he smoked is not similar to the modern tobacco blend. They just bought the old brand name and called their blend that.) Have not tried my pipe with Whiskey, will have to give this a go. When the weather is cooler. I normally sit outside, sipping coffee and slow smoking a bowl or two of "Hobbit weed" pipe tobacco. Great episode.

Interesting to watch someone who I know is an expert (in Whisk(e)y) talk about something they are not so expert in. The piece of advice I give most often to new pipe smokers is to don't give up on it (keep at it) and don't over think it. I believe you've captured that spirit (no pun intended) very well! Cheers and keep on puffin!

Oh man, did this bring back memories from the 70's and 80's. I really miss time with the pipe ... as you noted, it has an appealing fiddle factor and then there's all the specialized accessories (leather pouch bags, lighters, variations to the 3 prong tool, the endless pipe styles and tobacco mixes, etc.). I can picture Daniel with a classic Hobbit pipe (12-16 inch stem with a unique bowl), Rex needs a meerschaum pipe carved with a mermaid theme. Damn the doctors and their no smoking decree, may have to dig out the collection once again.

I think I’m being hazed! This might be my welcome to the tribe/Patreon! I sent a post asking about pairing whiskey with whiskey, and since then it’s been all pairing whisky with everything BUT whiskey. The Ballad of the Lone Tribesman: Whiskey with pie and whiskey with pipes. Whisky with peanut butter and sausage and snipes. The little one likes whiskey alone in a chair, making us look and making us stare. The Mooch on the other hand will drink all your shit, while the wee one dances and throws a wee fit. But which whisky we drink after drinking one or two, well that’s a show that just will not do. I consider myself welcome despite the dead air, “They wouldn’t ignore me if they didn’t care.” I’ll seek northern comfort through drams of good spirit I’ll not drink alone for long, but it’s true, I do fear it.

I've smoked pipes and occasionally cigars, and while I would never advocate for anyone to smoke anything, if you are going to smoke, the pipe is the best thing. It's far more pleasant for those around you and like Daniel mentioned, there is ritual to it. It's like shaving with a straight razor, sure there are easier ways, but there is a satisfaction in the art of the thing.

First off I'm glad I've stumbled across your channel! Love the vids. But I definitely prefer smoking cigars over a pipe. I have a corn cob pipe and a nicer wood one with filter cartridges. My method for lighting the pipe takes no longer than a minute to get packed and going using matches and I use mostly the ribbon cutting like you mentioned but have never grown accustomed to the heat of using a pipe over cigars. The heat I talk about is the same as if you've smoked a stoogie down to a 1-2 inch nub. I've never been able to avoid a ragged out tongue from smoking out of a pipe. If anyone has a suggestion as to what I could do differently, please let me know. But my opinion currently is if you want to have a good drink and smoke , cigars are the way to go. Less hassle and more enjoyability. Nothing better than a good drink, a good smoke and great company my friends.

The end actually had me wondering how the flavor of tobacco would taste if you were to add in some whiskey and then let it dry back out which would in theory allow the ethanol to evaporate off but the oils and flavorings would soak into the leaves.
@fifthtyp3
@fifthtyp3 6 лет назад
McClelland Frog Morton tried a ton of things to flavour with whiskey and directly it made the taste bad if I recall, it ruins the sugar in the tobacco (he mentions experimenting thousands of different ways) just doesn't taste good. He finally figured it out by canning the tobacco with a stave cube from 8-year-old bourbon barrels. He sanded the scum off and put it in the can quickly before sealing so the alcohol didn't have a chance to evaporate. They have had to close the doors this year but you can still find frog Morton at increased prices

I know cigars are more popular, but I personally switched to pipe for a couple reasons. First, pipe tobacco is a lot more economical, and a little goes a long way! Even if I get a tin I decide I don't really like after a few smokes, I don't feel bad about it because often times it only cost me $10-$15. Also, I smoked cigars very occasionally (part because of price and part because of health). I never really built up that much of a tolerance to nicotine, and I found that even some lighter cigars would leave me feeling a little green after smoking. With pipes though, since the quantity of tobacco in a bowl is a good bit smaller than that of a cigar, I've never experienced this. I really enjoy pipe smoking, and my father used to smoke pipes when I was younger. Personally, I'm not a huge aromatic person. I like English and English blends, as well as some Virginias. Lately, I've really been loving Orlik Golden Sliced. It's almost refreshing in how it tastes, and it smokes quite cool in my Rhodesian.

The variety of pipe tobaccos, is just as wide as whisky. I would suggest that you try some of the "craft" tobaccos, like Pease, or C&D. Some of the more "generic" tobaccos have got some chemically junk in them. I had more people come up to me (in San Francisco) walking the dog with a vanilla cavendish talking about how nice it smelled... Pipes make people relaxed and they seem friendly, not so true with other products. I did find corn cobs to be hotter but... Pipes do tend to coat your tongue more than cigars, personal opinion. It's a great thing to do while walking when it's cool- cold. Latakia, Peroque. The first is from Syria, originally but now more cyprus since syria is a war zone, is very old leather and historically flavored by the drying of the tobacco leaves in the heat of fires of camel dung. Perique is fermented, originally in hollowed tree trunks but now? and is a native american invention.
