Johnny Carson was not a show, it was therapy. He provided an escape from reality. You can't say that about any show anymore. He could have been brilliant that night or could have sucked that night. I'm 24 and was born in 1996. And this is the funniest stuff ever. I've watched so much old Johnny Carson with Don Rickles and Rodney dangerfield, George Burns, the list goes on. I'm embarrassed that we have Fallon and Kimmel. They are so boring. This looked like a fun genuine time. I love watching old TV shows. Like Fish, Original chips. This stuff is just humor. Good point. That is one of the things that made Johnny special. He wanted other people to shine on his show, especially funny people. He did not need to get every laugh himself. He just wanted the show to be top notch, whether he got the laughs, or someone else did. He was secure in himself and his abilities. More evidence of this is how he had guest hosts sit in for him a lot. A lot of hosts would not do that. They would be afraid of the guest hosts being too good.

Late night hosts are now just political mouthpieces for owner, all they have to do is read teleprompter and smile . . . EVERY single night they bash Trump at least 3 times even if he has nothing to do with topic. Gets old and very redundant. No one cares what the owner of network thinks about politics and pushing it down our throat every evening just makes you turn channel.. We watch to laugh, not to be told how to vote and think. TV execs VERY out of touch with blue collar workers

I think Johnny's laugh improved over time. When he was young, it was kind of nasally and repetitive. As he got older, it was basically the same laugh, but heartier and more melodic, seeming to come more from the diaphragm (as the singing instructors I've seen on TV would say).

That's so amazing! I remember seeing that segment when the show first aired and thought it was some of the funniest material I had ever heard. I still find it hilarious. As it happens, I met Doc Severinsen back when I was in college. The Tonight Show Band came to the school to do a concert, which was fabulous, and some of us music majors went back stage afterwards and met Doc, Tommy Newsom, and Eddie Shaughnessy, the drummer. They couldn't have been nicer and made the evening extra special for me and my friends. I'll never forget them.
