Amen to that. Sadly most people under 40 just don't realize how funny he was. I admit a lot of it is time sensitive in that you had to be around then to get some of the jokes but it still blows what's on late night now away by leaps and bounds.

Chad Quick Carson, when he was young, did incredible stunts on his show, one of the biggest stars on TV and unafraid of making himself look silly. He was so good at making fun of himself, so he convinced us that he was just like the rest of us, despite his millions and celebrity status. To do that unerringly for thousands of performances is astounding.

Chad Quick True true. A younger generation used to quick editing and Fallon laughing like a little girl during his interviews may never understand Carson's humor, quick wit, and handling of a crowd. Johnny was something else, that's for sure.

+Doug Celeste Somewhere online recently at a web site there was list of top 10 comedians- Johnny Carson wasn't even on it. As far as talk show hosts, Johnny and - Steve Allen- well they were the greats. For LATE late late night- Tom Syder and Craig Ferguson get votes from me. David Letterman (will sure miss him) too, showed how it takes years and layers to develop a great style- he should have had the Tonight Show.
@DougCeleste
@DougCeleste 9 лет назад
+Katy D Thanks for your reply. Johnny Carson and Steve Allen excelled at being comedians with their skits and having keen senses of humor along with being great talk show hosts with interesting guests. They had it all and are at the top of my list but I like Johnny the best of them all and miss him the most!! Tom Snyder was mainly a fine talk show host with a great voice and personality and he was not afraid to ask the tough questions to his guests. He was a real pro for very interesting in-depth talks late at night. But the bottom line, Katy, is that all of us will have our own list of favorites and that is fine. Cheers!

@DougCeleste

+aspenrebel You got that right and my dad and I were just talking about that on the phone since he is seeing reruns of Johnny's "Tonight Show" where he lives and just loves them. Johnny was the BEST ever in my opinion for what he did with his talents and that generation of guests he had are almost all gone now. That was an era that will never be again and thank God for the reruns! And today's hosts and guests on these late night shows bore me to death and that is why I keep the tv off at night now. And their personalities annoy me and their "comedy" is NOT funny at all! So yah, it definitely IS "late night crap"!

I missed this when it aired, so seeing it now is a real treat. Two observations: 1. If you're below a certain age, you won't get most of this; if you're above a certain age, you'll find this hysterical. 2. Carson's genius was never on better display than when he delivered the opening monologue, it bombed, and he then turned the bomb into comedy GOLD. Carson: The GOLD STANDARD.

The saying is that an actor or performer should NEVER look directly at the camera. Johnny ignored that completely, and it was hilarious. Most comedians today would be devastated and hurt if a joke bombed. But Johnny, like Bob Hope, realized quickly that, no, the audience was not laughing AT them. They were laughing WITH them. Brilliant.

I used to stay up almost every night watching Carson with my dad. While there are many ways you can break down the differences between Carson and his best guests of old and the guests of today, what my dad used to say is that back then they were sharp as in "sharp witted, meaning having a quick and discerning intellect." Today, I would say Conan is easily the best overall comedian by a long shot of any of the current talk show hosts; he has writing skills, improv, timing, and a likable character that is also self-deprecating, just like Carson, so you end up being sympathetic. But nobody has the consistent caliber of guests these days, so it is not worth watching. Maybe it is the lack of booze on set or maybe PR has everything scripted, but the magic is gone. In a weird way it moved to Jon Stewart and the Daily Show for a while, it would be nice to know where the soul of late night will land next.

I'm with you guys & I've said this for years, and framed it like this: The great thing about Carson was that, when he was bombing, he was even more hilarious than when he was spot on. And, that's saying a lot because Carson, when spot on, was an absolute hoot. It's just that when he bombed, Carson had, what I suppose you might call, a certain physical comedy about him --- his reactions, and in fact, he didn't panic -- his expressions and movement as if he were embarrassed. One analogy might be situations when many people become uncomfortable when a conversation goes silent, especially such as a couple on a first date, and that type of thing. The longer the silence goes, the more uncomfortable one or both persons might become. Many times, one person will finally "crack" and just start blurting out nonsense. The silence overwhelms them and they can't help but break that silence -- with things that can't even be scripted. Well, when Carson bombed, the laughs would not come, and Carson would exhibit all the mannerisms of someone who is terribly conscious of being uncomfortable and not knowing what to do or say -- like a deer in the headlights. (Without doubt, Carson was not uncomfortable at all, although he would always cause himself to appear to be terribly conscious of being embarassed). But unlike the person, as referenced above, who "cracks" in the silence and is compelled to make noise of any kind -- just anything at all to break the bewildering silence; that is, the person "rushes" to break the silence -- Carson would actually extend the time period of the "bomb." Rather than rush into the next joke, he would stand there, blink his eyes, while calmly allowing the "bomb effect" to run its course -- he, in fact, would let time slow down and allow everyone to really "feel" those moments for however long he could milk it. That was his trademark -- the ability to appear uncomfortable, yet that really not being the case, and let that seemingly awkward moment run for an almost unbearable amount of time. Classic stuff. Fallen, etc., just don't live up to that. And these new ones rely so much on videos and other such scripted stuff. There's spontaneous stuff, but nothing like The Tonight Show.

I guess you haven't watched any of Conan on TBS. The best of Conan on TBS is worst than having your face blown off by a cannon filled with silverware. "Hey look! Conan is acting like an ass to his staff! So funny! I could watch this every night! Oh wait...that is how often they do this same bit over and over again!" Boy..that Jordan guy is SO funny! He is just as funny as the first time he was on! Well..that's true. It wasn't funny the first time, and it wasn't funny the 825th time.

If you love JOHNNY like i do'''''''''''''watch here on RU-vid......"Johnny Goes Home".......he goes back to his hometown in Nebraska 1982 and visits his childhood home....the town.....and even meets some of his old schoolmates and one of his teachers holds class and teaches them a lesson.This will make you laugh and cry with joy.

The word that comes to mind when I watch Carson now is 'adult.' Talk shows now have a kiddie feel. Like they're produced by Nickelodeon. But this feels like an adult at the helm talking to adults. I miss that.

You know why its always funny, good or not? Because it wasn't about the joke- it was ALWAYS about the schtick. And the schtick was, and always will be, what made Johnny Carson funny.

Wolf Puck Ferguson is quick on his feet, but he never, and will never have Carson ratings.. Ferguson literally has no pressure and he relies on a few 'props' as savers.. Carson was alone, and as the story goes, he wrote the entire show from time to time, when needed.. He was a beast unmatched by todays standards.

timmian85 heres the reply u were waiting for. First carson was the only late nite show when he had mad ratings n now there r so many that it is not possible to get close to ratings. Demand and supply dude.. Now the props u were talking about he doesn't have big budget he is alone gunnin it. Fallon has all the budget in the world, roots, comedy skits produced at high level i m talkin about budget here and then all the guests he need. U just need to put craig ferguson best moments on youtube n look at the stuff that pops up n compare. HE IS FUNNY AS HELLL N NO ONE CAN TOUCH HIM. every other host does the monologue as if they r reading a script at a board meeting n then they..... u know what i can go so long that idec anymore.... say what u want dude

Only Carson could bomb this gracefully. He was the best. If a joke worked, it was great. If it didn't, even better. It was funny either way.

I'd put it just a little differently. Carson could be entertaining even when his jokes were bombing. It helped a lot that he could make fun of himself or joke gently about the tough crowd. So, I guess I suppose that he could make a funny about being unfunny. Damn, I miss him. So much more entertaining than the late nite hosts today.

@@StuartAllgood True, an interview with Doc. S. after Carson's death he spoke of when the jokes bombed, the writers were called on the carpet to explain., and if it happens again soon, they were gone! Doc said while Johnny appeared easy going on the surface, behind the scenes he was a tough taskmaster.

I don't know how many times I have mentioned something that was on The Tonight Show and said "When Jonny Carson was the host." And, the person I was talking to would say "You mean when it was still good." In fact, I remember growing up hearing people calling it "The Jonny Carson Show."

Look to "Meeting of Minds" with Steve Allen; a few episodes are posted on RU-vid. Start with Season 1, episode 1, with guests Thomas Aquinas, Theodore Roosevelt, Cleopatra, and Thomas Paine. Steve Allen, first host of The Tonight Show, wrote those scripts and brought together the talented actors to present them in a natural and conversational style. You could almost believe you were listening to the historical figures in debate and discussion.
