Lyrics:
My daddy left home when I was three
And he didn't leave much to ma and me
Just this old guitar and an empty bottle of booze.
Now, I don't blame him cause he run and hid
But the meanest thing that he ever did
Was before he left, he went and named me Sue.
Well, he must o' thought that is quite a joke
And it got a lot of laughs from a' lots of folk,
It seems I had to fight my whole life through.
Some gal would giggle and I'd get red
And some guy'd laugh and I'd bust his head,
I tell ya, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.

I met Johnny in 75, never a more approachable man on this earth. Like so many of us, Johnny stumbled in his younger years but he never fell. Never a man with the solid values in life have I ever met. He fell in love with June Carter but she wouldn't have him intill he quit the drugs. He quit cold turkey, married June and the rest was history . If that doesn't show us all the power of love my friends, NOTHING WILL!!. God bless you Johnny , for giving us all something all the gold in the world can't buy, your music, your values , and for making us all better people just by you being on this earth. Rest in peace my friend, both you and June.

He was a humble man, a great man...as he signed his autograph for me, I told him I was trying to learn how to play guitar, but I only knew 2 chords so far, he said son, I got famous knowing 3 chords, you're almost there, learn 2 more and you'll be better than me, what a great man.

Daddy loves Johnny Cash's music & would play it for me when I was a teenager. I remember he told me Shel Silverstein wrote this song & Mr. Cash was reading the lyrics as he played. He said at the end of the song "Those people cheering are inmates at a jail." This song is a classic & hilarious, but what I love most about it is that Mr. Cash & his crew went & preformed for people who were serving time in prison. That's an incredibly kind thing of them to do.

I was a preschooler when I first heard this. My parents would meet up for lunch with me at a pub and the first time I heard it on a jukebox I fell for that song and constantly pestered my parents for money to play it over and over. I claimed my imaginery friend Mick liked it. I still love it now. Later on in life I found out who Johnny Cash was. My pre school instinct was good. Johnny Cash was a thoughtful man who fought for people that society left behind he was simply something spectacular and even to this day, my love of plain black clothing I could probably put down to knowing, badasses wear black. I'm a grandma now and I may accidentally on purpose break out the Johnny Cash and explain that it's not just Goths that wear black.

Hah. When I was a kid, my dad used to drive me to swimming practice of a Sunday morning. His car had one of those eight track things. Those giant 1960s tape cassette things. He had two tapes. Holst : The Planets Suite, and the best of Johnny Cash. I memorised the words to this aged like seven or something. Happy times man.

in this version, he skips over the second stanza: Well, he must have thought it was quite a joke, and it got lots of laughs from a lot of folks, it seems I had to fight my whole life through. Some gal would giggle and I'd get red and some guy would laugh and I'd bust his head, I tell you, life ain't easy for a boy named Sue.

Its weird because in the San Quentin Album the whole thing is there and the audio is from this performance so I think in the video they just cut it out. Not the poster of the video but the actual dvd where this is from

I like songs that tell a story and this one is the best I ever heard. I think that's a real good story, it's serious and it's funny at the same time. Mr. Jonny Cash is as convincing as it gets. He's great - a personality the same level as Elvis in my opinion. He's become a legend.

I was exposed to Johnny Cash (and Ray Charles & Al Green) in the early 70s via my dads 8-track tapes which he would play non-stop in our family car back then, a Thunderbird. Hearing this song now in 2017 brings back some of my earliest memories of being a kid. Now I understand why dad played this music so much. It's great music!!
