Johnny Cash (with Marty Stuart) kicks the ass of Soundgarden's Rusty Cage on a popular American chat show back in the 90s while promoting his Unchained CD, then sits down for a palaver with the host.
@@brodie2005thegamer well, people who knew him didn’t think that. But yeah, he had terrible moments which he owned up to and tried to make amends as much as he could.
I love how Johnny crossed over into hard rock, metal, & alternative. It was the only place he could go when country had abandoned their gothic imagery.
Oh yeah. I hate when country artists stopped wearing corpse paint and pentagram medallions, and celebrating Samhain. Damn you Kenny Rogers! Sell out, goes from sacrificing chickens to sticking them on a rotisserie and selling them.
@@jimbovens8533 bruh, you're talking about something I wrote months ago. I don't even know what the hell you're talking about seriously. I honestly don't remember it so it has to be a long time ago. It's sunday, do the comments Nazis take a day off? Sheesh
Both versions are really good. It's hard to believe it's the same song. They sound so different from each other. Cash does it so good that his sounds like it was the original. R.I.P. Chris.
According to his autobiography, Cash took a lot of convincing with this one. He had to have someone break it down for him on acoustic guitar before he could hear himself singing it.
Right on, right on, Mick... one of the best singers I've ever heard, if not the best, and heck of a guy, I just can't believe he done what the loser's said what he did....
+Jeremy Keiser Dude, don't go calling people stupid when you can't get your facts in a straight line. Soundgarden wrote and did Rusty Cage originally andJohnny Cash covered it.
The moment this guy steps forward, even before he opens his mouth, you know you're going to see something great. Nobody will ever be at this level. RIP John. See you up there one of these days, we'll talk about it all.
Why would any Soundgarden fans take offense by this cover, including me??? Cash is an ICON, and Chris is probably honored by this. And it's great cover version btw. Love them both.
To Cash's eternal credit, He covered a great song. And then did it justice in his own style. I dig both versions for what they are, hard rolling music about indomitable will.
This is the single best comment I have ever read on RU-vid. You are inclusive and do not discriminate against those whom do not share your tastes. Thanks to COD, I learned that the Man in Black covered one of my favourite Soundgarden songs. And thanks to you, I can watch a legend at work playing a beautiful song.
This guy was on tour with Elvis Presley at his start, and remained popular, and in the know, enough to cover Soundgarden and NIN, and give them a run for their money on the best version. One of the best.
Being a fan of Johnny and Chris it’s was so cool when when Johnny covered sound garden. Johnny totally flipped that song it’s like a new song. Two unique artists and voices that are missed ,but we are lucky to have the music they left us .
Jesus, if I had seen this not knowing that it was originally a Soundgarden song, I would have thought Cash had turned into a complete bad ass in his old age.
Don't get me wrong, Johnny Cash was talented and all, but most of his songs from the 60s and 70s have a certain level of twangy cheese that just doesn't hold up today. Also, he didn't learn how to do a truly GREAT cover until the 90s when he branched into pop and alternative stuff. Just my two cents.
The perfect country star to do hard rock, he was The Man In Black and a true rebel in the country music scene, perfect image and style for metal/grunge. A perfect match, justcthink if he'd met Rick Rubin 20 years earlier. RIP Johnny and Rick
Thanks for the link. It was too much screaming from the pig, but had Johnny done all of the vocals on this, it would have been perfect. Either way, it shows the diversity of his sounds. Can you imagine if he'd have done a cut with Metallica?
I remember watchin this ...I've been a Johnny Cash since I was a kid in the early 70's thanks to my Dad having great taste in music ....Hearing Cash covering Soundgarden's Rusty Cage and destroying their original version proved once again a seasoned veteran of music will always one up the current trendy bands
Sorry but the man just radiates cool dignity. Even though he enjoyed a huge late career rebirth, I still feel that more could be done, I don't know why I feel that, maybe because he just "feels" like music history.
I'm glad you think that. It's not often that someone who covers a great song does it in their own awesome style and make the song even better either way.
Yeah it is, I've been a big fan since I was young (27 now) and play BLOPS zombies. when I heard this on there I think that's what I was most excited for was knowing a bunch of kids who don't normally listen to him got introduced to him.
God I miss this man. Coolest musician that ever lived. Wish Chris would’ve spent more time with him. If so he wouldn’t have ended his life so foolishly.
I recall listening to this CD the first time. It knocked me on my a** it was so good and I was surprised by the whole disc. This was a great period for Cash he had a major renaissance and on his own terms.
Johnny pulls this off so well that when my dad first heard it, he thought it was a Cash original and that Soundgarden had covered it. How's that for talent?
One thing the average call of duty fan wouldn't do is search the original version of the Easter egg song (for those who don't know, this song is used on the second downloadable map) but I must say that Johnny cash is one of the greatest non metal artists around, great song and a greater history of songs!
@thehornypuppy you're absolutely right. Johnny's cover of Rusty Cage opened Cornell's eyes about covers and he basicaly changed the way he looks at song covers etc
