It was an off day at the festival, so Linda and I sat down to play a few tunes by ourselves. An old guy came by and recognized one of Tommy Jarrell's tunes. He turned out to be former Monroe sideman and multi-instrumentalist Joe Stuart (1928-1987). We recognized him from an autographed photo Tommy kept in his living room. He and Tommy were big fans of each other. Joe sat down and surprised us with several tunes on cross-tuned fiddle and then on clawhammer banjo. He was a consumate musician, both bluegrass and old-time! He died just a few months later.
