this guy was the real deal. i watched this fight all those years ago. many had it for famechon though it went the other way to the bigger name. famechon to the best of my knowledge retired never to fight again. the guys boxing skill are evident, not just from famechon, but also saldivar in true mexican styling...the template of boxing from that country never ceases to amaze.
He was slipping to the canvas against Legra. Legra wasn't sending him to the canvas with punches other than on a couple of occasions. Even giving Legra points for a couple of those knockdows, I still had Famechon taking the fight by a point, so not a robbery in my book.
for those out there, it appears the tv networks from aust. had both their sports callers on the fight with the interest being that they were both "ron casey". if there's a correction then my apology, though it appears this way.....in '71 it was a 2 point margin for famechon, how much of that was local color for an audience i might never know..southpaw jab more power for rollin' with it
There's no doubt that the commentators were viewing the fight through Aussie lenses, but it was a close fight any way you cut it. I had Saldivar taking it by about a point myself, but Johnny was there with him all the way, and as you say the skills of both guys are clearly on display. Both these guys would roll the likes of Juan Manuel mMrquez today, who is receiving great plaudits as a master boxer.
