50 years ago yesterday (today in Australia), Johnny Famechon - one of the most underrated and under-discussed world champions ever - won the world featherweight title. He was a unique fighter. If he'd ever decided to use his right hand more, he'd have been even more formidable.
Fammo definitely underrated considering he never fought as an amateur and also the great names in the sport he was in the ring with towards the end of his career.
En este combate ni derecha ni izquierda. Piernas para escapar y brazos para sujetar al rival. Vaya regalo que le hizieron. hay que tener poca verguenza para darlo como vencedor
I was a great fan of Howard Winstone in my teenage years and was at the Royal Albert hall on 23/1/1968 when he beat Mitsunori Seki. At that time I had not heard of Johnny Famechon but having watched some of his fight videos I believe that he was superior to Winstone. He was a superb defensive boxer and in particular was rarely caught on the ropes. Winstone, however was prone to trade punches rather too often and was caught on the ropes too often in his fights with Vincente Saldivar. That said, I think he could have beaten Saldivar if he had stuck with his boxing skills rather than "fighting" skills. Famechon v Winstone would have been a superb spectacle if both boxers had been at their peak.
I've never heard this British commentary before. Was he for real? He'd remain silent whenever Famechon collected Legra and even say he got the worst of the exchange! He focused on Legra the entire fight!
