Johnny is off the scale. The kind of playing you can only hope to get when you starting playing at 2, have endless drive for it and are probably blessed by whatever higher power there is regardless !!
Ron Shawver not necessarily shown in this video, but Mike Durham has one of the cleanest classic tele tones around. His tele makes Hiland's musicman guitar sound thin like a $100 China special.
Intuition. And. Eases. His way And can turn the. Juice up as little or as much. As. Foots the bill Keeping a cool attitude and indifference to exactly how it's going to sound at the same time. Always remaining vigilante to. The particular sensibility the music is. Demanding Johnny is clearly the best and least odious. But rather a humble and. Easy going. Forward. I am an old-school Rock guitarist. I got my chop's studying Ritchie Blackmore ,Eddie Van Halen .. Jimmy Page...etc. ... never a fan of country although I did like some rockabilly... I have to say I get so much pleasure and excitement watching Johnny Hiland Jam. he is just as talented and intuitive as any guitar player I have ever admired. He has inspired me to step outside of my box and try something different. I fail miserably most of the time but the journey certainly is fun
I’m a blues rock player myself, and I like to do that too. Ive been playing a with a country guy and trying to find more ways to incorporate the two styles together has been fun and a learning experience for sure.
Ditto - Johnnys "Ten Gallon Hat Guitar" is the only instructional course I've ever bought. I'm a professional in my own regard, but Johnny, just like you said, encouraged me to get outside of my box, and myself. Takes a real helluva guy to do that for other guitar players.
The US have so many truly incredible players. You can feel it's a deep rooted culture of country and blues-rock! Johnny Hiland is such a monster player, I don't know if people understand how hard it is to play like that with such ease... anyway all the musicians here are top of the game! Greetings from France!
Not just great pickin but shows Johnny’s respectful character as well. He wanted to leash hell on them strings but he kept his cool and respectful of the other players. Johnny is best
This is brilliant. I especially like Brent Mason's smile every time Johnny cuts a solo - like he recognises a fellow genius at work. Absolutely stellar playing from the whole band - I wish I had been there to see this.
jeroen R me too. I watch this every once in awhile and it always blows me away and brings a smile to my face. This is just one of those special clips that makes me glad that we live in an age where people can record something like this and show it to others on RU-vid to share that experience.
I've been playing rock guitar for about 32 years and I'd put myself at a level these guys were after about 6weeks of playing. This stuff is truly mind blowing to listen to these guys. The precision and clarity is unreal.
@@levondarratt787 Brent Mason was born July 13, 1959. He is 62 years old right now, here in Nov 2021. He was in his 30's when he was making KILLER country music in the 90's.
I've played guitar for over 40 yrs. I love rock and blues , but have always thought this type of playing takes more talent and taste than any other style.
Fastguitars Johnny is a great picker but Brent was the best...not by much..lol. Don't forget Brent can also play anything Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed have ever put out..that's why he's one of the few tele players that pick with a thumb pick.

I don't know who could have thumbed down this vid. Obviously people who can't play. Thanks for the post! This was incredible! Absolutely jaw dropping incredible!
I would NOT hit the down thumb for this performance but I would not buy the record. I try to play guitar but if I practice for 137 years every day, there is not even a slim chance that I would share a stage with these guys. They're virtuoso's of course. But their rapid fire style of playing is a huge quantity of racket. They're practically shredding through their songs. More racket than music. That said, if I had the ability to play a guitar like them, I'd do so with a heart full of thanks for the gift I was born with. But I would look into making less racket and more music.
Thom I had a real bad day and you just turned it around! Nice video! To Brent and Johnny and everyone else ...A Huge Thank You for a great show!! Respect
I had my mind blown about 10 years ago at the NAMM show when I was picking up strings and Johnny Hiland was just sitting and chilling and playing Godly music while people came and went. Oh don’t get me wrong, there were folks actively listening and responding. But it was so effortless. I’ll never forget that. What can you say that hasn’t been said about Brent. And he deserves every good word he gets. A true guitar hero and a gent to boot.
Steve Piticco I sure would LOVE to see you right there with them Steve. Us Americans don't get to see enough of your great playing, you're definitely a full fledged member of the elites.
Steve Piticco - Hi Steve, it’s Réal. I agree, you’re in these gentlemen’s league absolutely- man that was some crazy tele- shred axe-travaganza wasn’t it!!🎸😎😜
My Lord!! I've seen Brent Mason and the Players live a few times, but yet to see Johnny. Hiland is a beast and could stand out with any group. Love this!
Wow! Did you see Brent go behind the nut and give that harmonic note some vibrato at 2:56?!? That was perfection buddy! I'm always too afraid if I do that my guitar will go out of tune for the rest of the song. I guess I could do a bend on that string, immediately after the trick, to pull it back into pitch?
Let me tell you a story about these guys... I run the Everyone Loves Guitar Podcast. I've interviewed both Johnny Hiland and Mike Durham (guitarist on the far right). And I'm hoping to get Brent on my show, as well. Both of these guys are not only fantastic players, but they are very sweet, kind solid people. We all know how talented Johnny and Brent are. And although you didn't get to hear Mike Durham play very much... let me tell you what happened when he and I spoke. We got along real well and so after our interview, he and I wound up chatting for an hour or so. While we're talking (over Skype), Mike picks up his guitar and starts noodling around. I tell you, my jaw nearly hit the ground. This guy is an AMAZING player and can give both Brent and Johnny, a good run for their money. It's no wonder why he is a First Call A-List session player in Nashville - who's always booked up. Thanks for putting this video up, great stuff!
That's about right. VERY good, but not something to write home about. How many came back to watch it again? Not me. People can be TOO enthusiastic about music in comments. Anyone else not get it about the non-stop "Billy Strings" bombardment on the internet? Not impressed with the tattoos that need to be shown all the time, every shirt is selected to say, "By the way? Have you seen my unique tattoos lately? I'm SO cool! I'd prefer to listen to every single artist featured on Bresh digital TV before listening to the kids try to sound 50 years older. Even Molly Tuttle, who is SUCH a burner doesn't have the soul that I love with the older, fatter, less pretty to look at players. How approachable can the "good bye girls" be, anyway? I thought you were supposed to say "Hello"?
@@darrendix5163 You seem to be trying to compare apples to oranges. Billy Strings and Molly Tuttle are great at their craft and shouldn't be compared to electric chicken pickin' players like these. Is there a need to slam one art form in order for you to have gratification? I bet Molly does things on acoustic that Brent or Johnny couldn't do. I can't out-pick any of them so I just enjoy all of it. Tommy Emmanuel digs Billy Strings so I'll go with his opinion. Just sayin'
Perhaps not exactly an 'average' night, but Nashville is certainly an amazing place to hear day and night, top notch music in a huge number of walk-in venues. Probably no other town quite like it.
+James Taylor - I'm all over the map with my interests in styles (master of none) but if I was given a chance to pick only one that I could be that good at this stuff is were I'd be.
Brent Mason..one of the original sick Nashville pickers who paved the way for countless others. When I first heard "Pick it Apart' on Marc O'Connor's 'The New Nashville Cats' album, my jaw dropped on Brent's solo. Ridiculous.
johnnys sound is a little subdued compared to brent and the other guitarist because he is humble person, not trying to steal the spotlight, he knows its brents gig. they are all great pickers!
I think you're right on that. He was being the unobtrusive guest until Brent Mason started to prod him and coaxed a little grin out of him, and then it was away to the races.
Great stuff. But hey we're missing the tele God "Redd Volkaert" still the best tele guy around. But yeah Brent /Hyland doing some heavy lifting here. mos60
Since I played in the clubs downtown I've seen all these guys including Redd in that setting..most all of them passed through the Don Kelley Band portal at Robert's Western...all amazing...that being said...my favorite tele picker in town has always been Vince Gill...he has ridiculous tone and spacing when he plays. Sings "ok" too :-)
yeah for sure. But it is interesting that all these great tele pickers are clones of the immortal tele guru James Burton. Chicken picking was introduced back in 1960 with JB with Ricky Nelson. Vince is probably the best overall today, albeit Brent/Hiland also superb. mos60
Use to catch Brent in the 80s at the Stagecoach Inn Murfreesboro Rd. In Nashville. They played 7 nights a week. He's such a legend...and that Johnny guy...wow!!
3 years later and this is still my favorite working man to listen to. You have some of the best pickers in the game sharing a stage. It's a beautiful moment and I'm thankful it was captured on video.
Have to come back often and get my fix on this. I’ve seen Brent with the Players several times and it’s just mind boggling everytime. Hiland is just an absolute beast too.
