“But that is called cannibalism, my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.” is my favorite quote in this movie. It makes it sound like Wonka doesn’t really mind if he gets eaten or not, he just wants the kids to know that their reputation will go down a bit if they do so.

46:21 fun fact: this scene is actually inspired by Tim Burton himself. Apparently, him and his mother’s relationship was not on good terms and he moved out when he was 15 and they didn’t talk to each other for years. Part of the reason for its inclusion was because the studio felt that Wonka should have a character arc. They suggested Wonka being a father figure of sorts to Charlie, but the team rejected it because Wonka from the books would be a terrible father due to him isolating himself from everyone but Oompa Loompas. It was after that when Burton suggested the story with Wonka and his father and Lissie Dahl gave it her approval.

So Johnny Depp did in fact run into the glass elevator by accident. The actors of Joe and Charlie were confused and didn't know what to do. The second time he did it was on purpose so we wouldn't suspect it was an accident after all.

People love to hate on this version of Dahl's story, but it is, for one, a much more faithful adaptation. Most of the dialogue is taken almost verbatim from the book. Also I feel like Roald Dahl and Tim Burton have a very similar approach to depicting fantasy, with the way they both like to juggle the dark and macabre with bizarre and heartfelt. "The Witches" - another near-perfect adaptation of Dahl - is a borderline horror movie, and, no wonder, it's an on honorary 80s film (it came out in 1990). You may want to check it out if you haven't already. Also, a couple of interesting facts: The squirrels were real, not CG. Even in the scene where they scoop on Veruka. The animal trainers said it was one of the most difficult tasks they had to do. Deep Roy, the actor who portrays the Oompa-Loompas had to repeat the movements for the dance sequences thousands of times to nail each one. But, fortunately, he was payed generously for his efforts. In fact, he made more money than Jonny did. Jonny Depp took inspiration for his peculiar way of speaking and mannerisms for his portrayal of Willy Wonka from Michael Jackson, perhaps as an homage, for he actively sought the role, but was rejected by the studio due to a controversy around him at the time.
@nickreacts6394
@nickreacts6394 2 года назад
The squirrels were real?? Wow, I thought way more of those scenes were CG, that's so impressive! Deep Roy earned every penny he got paid haha, although I am surprised he got more than the big star of the film. And someone else mentioned that Depp's mannerisms were similar to Michael Jackson's, so that makes perfect sense! But like you said, I think it's a great adaption and Burton does do a good job in balancing the "dark and macabre with bizarre and heartfelt". That's honestly an excellent way to capture the spirit of many of Tim Burton's films, well said!

A couple of interesting facts as well; 1. The first room where everything is edible is not CGI. The landscaping was done with styrofoam[?] I believe and all those edible landscaping are indeed, edible. The chocolate river was one of the difficult props to make because they really have to stay close with the consistency of chocolate. 2. The little house of Charlie and his family is also real and they made a miniature of the town to get those wide shots of the factory and the house. 3. So that the actor for the Oompa-Loompa does not have to shoot every character [I believe there were 50+ variations of the Oompa-Loompa], they made mini-robots for those little scenes [i.e. dropping a fruit, picking up chocolates] so the actors could shoot with an Oompa-Loompa and make it more natural.
@spiderdude2099
@spiderdude2099 2 года назад
In case you’re wondering, this version is MUCH more book accurate. The story of Prince Pondicherry was also in the book, and I think the oompa loompa songs have the lyrics directly ripped from the book. Also, in the original story, Charlie doesn’t find the ticket in the one he opens on his birthday or the one that grandpa joe buys for him. He finds a random and lucky dollar stuck in the snow and uses it to buy one on a whim, and that one is one that has the ticket

The only changes from the book (that I can remember since it's been over twenty years since I read it) were adding the Willy Wonka's father subplot, the Wonka's Welcome song, and omitting the song in the tunnel (that was the only song that they added in the original movie that was in the book). They modernized details like adding the competitive aspect to Violet and the computers/technology to Mike because the book was released in 1964, after all. The book is fairly short, so you needed to add details to pad the running time.

Did you know that the newspaper scene in Mr Wonka Dental Clinic was inspired by a real life experience of director Tim Burton? When he went to visit his Mom one day, he discovered that she had a collection of newspaper reviews and magazines articles about his movies, and that scene reflects that. I found this little trivia so sweet, because when a work is adapted to another media, it's changes to the a single author work to be had multiple creators, which one having their own vision an experiences, that can either shine a bad light on the source material, or make it better (sometimes, even out bright the source material completely). I found very beautiful that we human beings have this incredible skill of producing culture, although not out of nowhere, but from other pieces of work, our own experiences and views of the world.

"How dark can the movie be? " Pretty dark, if you consider the body horror aspects. Someone might say that this could be a horror movie if you take away the oompa-loompas songs, but I think they are even worse with it (if you take the place of the person they're mocking of) Said that, I'm very glad that you react to this movie. This is my childhood classic, and even though many people dislike this iteration, I love it because of all it's quirks. Now, I'll bring the big guns. Which one of the children had the least worst experiences in the factory? In my opinion, from the least to worst to nightmarish horrifying, this is my list: 1 - Veruca 2 - Augustus 3 - Violet 4 - Mike (Bonus option: Charlie, who had to inherit all of the lawsuits against Mr. Wonka's Chocolate Factory) The reason why: Mike and Violet suffered permanent damage on their bodies. Mike had the worst, being stretched until he's almost flat (which, I should remind of, is a real torture used in real life). Violet also had it bad, but at least she only got away with being violet (which is really fitting to her name. You can easily take advantage of this, considering her competitive traits). But I can just imagine how hard it was to make her going back to normal. Every time I think of that, I try to imagine the pain of trying to squeeze a pimple who doesn't want to be squeezed, but all over my body. Augustus and Veruca had morr easily, if you can put it in way. Augustus had to constantly drown himself in the dark, hot and slime chocolate, his most favourite thing in the world. As someone who has drowned more times than I would like, I can't fathom how horrible the experience must be (I'm even surprised that he came out alive in the end. And Veruca, who had the least worst experience. I mean, she might have fallen for awhile, and sure, she fell in two weeks worth of garbage, covered with that horrific smell, maggots, flies and roaches, but I mean, at least she had someone she knows to keep her company in her punishment. Plus, she didn't had to listen the oompa loompas mocking her and her flaws. Both of them are very lucky to leave without permanent damage, even if they had to go to therapy for a time (and in the case of Veruca, 2 weeks worth of baths). Btw, Veruca is indeed, a type of wart that grows in your foot. This parallel is even more close in portuguese, since wart is called "verruga". So imagine little old watching this movie in SBT when I was younger having to come with terms that some parents named her child Wart, my precious little head didn't comprehend that well =P
@nickreacts6394
@nickreacts6394 2 года назад
This a great breakdown! And I agree, Burton really adds some excellent horror touches that fit so well in the eccentric reality of Willy Wonka. I also really like your rankings of which children had it worst... I just hope that somehow they learned from this experience and turn out to be normal/ cool adults, but I don't really think that would happen. As far as naming your child "wart"... that makes A Boy Named Sue seem like a walk in the park...

If I remember correctly, unless her body's ability to produce pigment was permanently fucked up (and since the kids aren't seen again after they walk out those gates, we don't know for sure) her normal skin and hair colour will eventually return as the effected cells die and are replaced. So it's not as bad as that. As for Mike, in the book he was prescribed something intended to fill him out a little bit more, instead of being freakishly thin for the rest of his life. Only side effect was having toes longer than his fingers.

I would argue that Augustus is probably the #3 slot, between Violet and Mike, not #2. The reason? It's implied in the movie that he's been turned INTO chocolate, not just coated into it. In the part where the eight are leaving, his mother tells him to "stop eating YOURSELF", implying it's not just a chocolate coating. Sure, Violet is blue, and her body structure is clearly messed up, but she could lead a relatively normal life with the changes. Meanwhile... Augustus is literally part chocolate now, and... With his precluvity to eat chocolate... self-cannibalism is heavily implied. He's literally gnawing at his fingertips in that scene. Even the Oompa Loompa song, while mainly singing about being pulverized and ground down as an ingredient in the batch, could easily be interpreted in a way that goes along with this. It is a magical factory, after all. Anything is possible. Yeesh, now that I'm going through it in a more analytical way, the ENTIRE Augustus scene, from the mention of everything being eat-able to them boarding the boat, is all about cannibalism. Dang, Burton.

So glad you loved this version! I've never understood why it gets so much hate. As for similarities to the book, I admit I haven't read it, but I'm pretty sure I heard somewhere that the Oompa Loompas' songs have the same lyrics as the ones in the book. I was born in 2001, and my mother absolutely loves Johnny Depp (her "on-screen boyfriend" as she still calls him to this day), so for me growing up, THIS was the only "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" movie that existed. In fact, I never even KNEW that it was a remake of the original movie until I was like, I dunno, maybe 9 years old? Maybe 10? Needless to say, I have NEVER understood the hate that this movie gets, and ironically, that same hate that people feel towards this movie is the same hate that I feel towards the original movie. Growing up with this version, I just cannot understand for the life of me what people actually like about that original version. I've never even read the book, either, and I still liked this true-to-the-source version better.

I like that both Willy and Charlie are soft spoken in this, which to me feels like something the Oompa Loompas like cuz sound HAS to be loud for them, since they’re so small and the world around them is so large. The entire cast was perfectly chosen, the design of the entire town, not to mention the factory…everything was wonderful.

I think Willy Wonker really personifies the wonder and fantasy aspect. Whenever someone came at him with rationality he completely dismissed or disregarded what they were saying, because candy for him IS wonder (and he doesn't get rationality at all). It's filled with endless creativity and possibilities. That's what made him a genius, because there never was any gain for him beyond creation and possibilities. That's why I think he propably "hated" the tech kid the most - he was complete anathema to him in every way. xD

I don't think you're reading too much into it. I definitely see this as the story of an artist who has a terrible relationship with his family. Ironic that while that may be Burton's story it's also Johnny's. I found the performance absolutely brilliant: the switch from his "tics", where he's almost machine like, something created on a factory floor, like a robot really, like Arnold in the early Terminator movies, or the robot in I Robot (and his father first makes and then fixes factory machines, as he fixes Willy Wonka at the end) to those "dead" eyes when he's looking at these terrible children and their parents. I think it's meant to be frightening, like some of the Grimm's fairy tales where children who misbehave have terrible things happen to them.

I love both film versions of this story. I saw the original film in my younger days and saw this when it came out in theaters. This version is more faithful to the book; even the songs in this film are in the book. I did love that we got an origin backstory for him that explains his antisocial skills with the adults. When Willy looked for an heir, he thought he would find a good and honest child who had parents or a family that didn’t appreciate him like how he felt rejected by his father. It took Charlie choosing the love for his family over the factory to show Willy Wonka that he would never be satisfied with his achievements until he reconciled with his father. You can even see that despite Wonka’s father’s opinion about his career choice, he still loved him and was proud how he did succeed by his own hard work. Also that he too wanted to reconcile with Willy and just needed the opportunity. 🍫🎩

Whilst designing this film Tim Burton's mother was sick and he went to visit her. Tim and his mum apparently had a very strange relationship but on one of the last times he saw her before she passed away he found out she kept news paper cutting and headlines about what he'd been doing. Showing she really was proud of him. This is where the newspaper scene at the end of the film came from. There are a lot more little details like this which are amazing as well in the film but this is one of the best.

I've been very interested in myths, legends, and fairy tales since I was in 3rd grade. I read every one from every culture that I could. I even read the original Brothers Grimm tales, which were actually collected folk tales and quite unlike the sanitized versions that are shared in current children's literature. (Did you know that Rapunzel had twins with her prince before the witch drove her away from the tower; or that the witch threw the prince down from the tower into brambles, which cut his eyes and blinded him; or that after Rapunzel and the prince separately were lost in the forest before finding each other, and her tears healed his blindness?) I was also very drawn to psychology and symbolism at a young age, especially Carl Jung. I followed symbolic art: visual forms like drawing, painting, theater, and film. Loved the analyses of Joseph Campbell, who brought inspiration to people like George Lucas (as is evident in his Star Wars franchise). There is a sense, an 'organic' feeling to storymaking and storytelling; it's a visionary format. John Boorman was making "The Emerald Forest" in Brazil, using members of an actual indigenous tribe. I recall reading that Boorman had explained to a tribal shaman what he does as a filmmaker, and the shaman stated Boorman acted as a shaman, providing visions for others to see. I provide this as context for what I have to say about Raold Dahl. His writing is very weird, almost demented. There is something very broken and diseased in his stories. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory", "Matilda", "The Witches", "James and the Giant Peach" all divert from how every other folk tale, fairy story, myth, or legend unfolds. There is a poison at the heart of every one of them. I've been convinced for years that there is something very wrong with that writer. Others have made better stories of his original works by laying in a healthier emotional interior and just keeping the story structure superficials, but faithfulness to the original written work is too alien or cracked to be palatable. I think Tim Burton gets closest to the original in the 'alien' vibe while still making it accessible to the average viewer. It's a matter of 2 different weirdnesses getting along (because Tim Burton is beautifully weird), with Burton being able to pull Dahl into the realm of normal people's sphere of acceptability.

If Depp had been unavailable, Burton's second choice would have been Dwayne Johnson (which would have been hilarious to see - not that Depp wasn't amazing in the role). Also, Depp was the one to suggest Freddie Highmore for the role of Charlie, since they'd worked together in a previous film, and they were struggling to find an actor they liked.

I love how you added his gloves as a way that he can't reach out and touch someone, and reach out for help. It's a phenomenal testament to his mental health and his struggle with finding the hope that he's not alone. The best thing you can do for yourself is to reach out for help. It will mean the world to yourself and to the people who care about you. I struggle with this very thing myself. This is why I relate so much to this version of Willy Wonka. The struggle to reach out, and the fear of rejection only worsens that struggle, and eventually, that mindset ends up taking over your life and becomes the only way you can get up in the morning without the fear of being hurt. And that is the worst way to live. But also suicide is not the answer. It never will be. You NEED to talk to people. You NEED to reach out, to touch someone (NOT LIKE THAT), to connect. This was phenomenally displayed in Joker. Wonka never had that chance, and he let his passion take over his life to the point that it corrupted his view of people. I'm rambling at this point but I deeply appreciate the view that you gave his character. It makes that scene where he hugged his dad even more beautiful.

The previous movie isn't "the original" film though. The newer movie was inspired by the same book and is completely separate from the first adaptations. The author actually really hated the first movie, and banned the book from being made into a movie while he was alive. The new movie was made after his death, with help from his family, to made sure it was created in a way that the author would have loved

I should make a horror film named "Wonka" where he comes off charming and shy until they all meet him in the factory.

It feels oddly refreshing seeing someone watch the movie is a kinda light perspective so to speak, like questioning certain parts but more like you are anticipating what comes next, the small descriptions that make me happy of parts of the movie being noticed and such, joking and passing comments and especially just enjoying the little thibgs for all the characters. Any review or reaction is more critical or precise and sharp with this movie, but this just feels so laid back, it felt like just watching casual with someone on movie night so to speak. Love it. .D.

I always loved this movie. I never understood why others hate it in any other reason that’s not “nostalgia.” I remember seeing that they had got the wife, of who made the book, to keep it close. Which, after watching/reading Percy Jackson, made it so much better. I also remember thinking Willy Wonka was more played by Jim Carrey than Johnny Depp. Learning it was him later on was very mind blowing 😂 I wouldn’t say this as a kid, but now I love what they did with each kid and showing that they’re still alive. It was my biggest worry as a kid, next to the question why isn’t this real.. I haven’t fully watched the Original Willy Wonka (and I’m not sure if i ever will), but I have watched the musical and that was a journey I don’t want to take again (it was a mistake). The musical really took a more horrifying approach, especially with what happens to Violet and Veruca, and they still barley clarify if they’re dead or alive. I want to remember the others but those two happened so fast that it’s all I can remember from the whole musical. Which is why I love this version way more. It has that right amount of horror that didn’t traumatize me as a kid. (Even tho, I watched the musical two years ago.) Rewatching as an adult really makes the movie so much better too. Finding stuff that I didn’t get as a kid, or just enjoying jokes that I always found funny. Tim Burton and Johnny really did a great job.

See the thing about this film is I can't watch it without wondering what's going through that crowd outside the factories minds. 5 normal kids and their parents go in. Only 4 come out of which 1 may or may not be made of chocolate (listening to his conversation with his mother), 1 is blue and appears to have no bones, 1 is covered in rubbish along with her dad and the last has only 2 dimensions. It would be terrifying to the onlookers.

I would like to recommend a Johnny Depp movie. Finding Neverland. It's about how the story of Peter Pan was created and has Freddie Highmore in it - the chemistry between Johnny and him is beautiful. I won't say anymore just in case. Loved this reaction btw!

I love this movie so much, and it's a pleasure to see you reacting to it!! Johnny Depp's performance in Willy Wonka is incredible and your analysis fits perfeclty. I'd like to see you watch the Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, lots of people don't like it but it's one of my favorite movies even if it has flaws.

this movie is, IMO, brutally underrated 🥹 i loved johnny’s version of willy wonka and i know lot of people think the movie is kinda weird but i mean, it’s tim burton! also, i find this version more similar to the book so that’s something i appreciate. i think this movie shows how versatile johnny is, the fact that many people didn’t recognize him in this movie shows that he’s just brilliant!

i also would like to recommend you another beautiful movie with johnny depp and the same kid who plays charlie in here, it’s called “finding neverland” and it came out around the same year (maybe a year before in the usa? idk). it’s completely different from this movie, but it’s an amazing story and it shows, once again, how incredible johnny depp can be!

Willy Wonka was the first musical I was in, it was a high school show but they let middleschoolers audition to be oompa loompas and children, and they cast me as Violet Beauregarde...'s mom. I was a 6th grader, and my "daughter" was a senior. The director said when interviewed about it "i thought it would be funny" lmaoooo, he's like my uncle now :)
