*GIRLFRIEND CAN'T HANDLE* Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) Reaction: FIRST TIME WATCHING 

Regardless if you find this Wonka off putting, this is actually more realistic considering he now has a back story. When you lock yourself away for 15 years, not to mention never getting closure on what happened between him and his dad, which made him bitter and misanthropic, this is actually close to what would come out of it.

Burton was completely against using CGI if he could help it, and this is another example. All the squirrels you see? They're real. In fact, they're rescue squirrels that Burton specifically hired someone to train them to do all these scenes. He even named them. If you really want specifics, the real ones are whenever you get a close up of one, when they first attack Veruca's stunt double, and when that one squirrel pushes the dad in after her. Also, apparently this is supposed to be ironic. She exploited nut workers to get what she wanted in the beginning, tried to do the same thing here, and it backfired.

I really like the fact that the parents don’t let Charlie get rid of the ticket for the money. Under any other circumstance, that might be a good idea, considering they don’t have any money. I think it was really important for the family to let Charlie keep his dreams alive and not have to sacrifice his childhood in order to help them pay for things. It was important that Charlie wanted to help, AND important that they wouldn’t let him help.

Charlie Bucket has to be one of the most pure and golden-hearted characters in literature

A version where everyone survives, and the parents are stuck with the results of their parenting style. Augustus: mom didn't stop him from overeating. Veruca: dad wound up in the garbage because of him spoiling her. Violet: blue because her mom pushed her to pit herself above the others. Mike: let technology be his son's only babysitter, and never stopped him.

Cinematography note here: the further they get inside the factory, the colors drain away. Do with that what you will. It's not just Wonka that's getting washed out, the factory is too. He just made a huge technological invention, and there's no joy in it other than for advertising candy.

17:45 Johnny Depp is one of those actors that can change their appearance to fit the movie. 42:47 remember when he left his dad when he was a kid his dad said he wouldn’t be there when he got back. When he did go back to where his dad was there was an empty space where the house was like his dad somehow moved the whole building.

Say what you want about the oompa loompa flashback, but it's here for two very good reasons. 1. It shows Wonka wasn't making it up and did not in fact kidnap them like people assumed the original did. 2. Also, it shows he was there for another reason, and found them by chance.

As someone who grew up with the Gene Wilder Wonka movie, I also essentially grew up with the Johnny Depp version as well cause while I grew up with Wilder from grade school, the Burton movie came out when I was 13 so I feel like both movies are from my childhood so I guess that's one of the reasons why I love both movies. I think both Gene and Johnny were fantastic in their roles and both movies are just so special to me and I can't wait for you guys to do the Wilder one!

The toothpaste is called Smilex. It's a direct reference to Tim Burton's Batman, which is what Joker called his brand of poison.

Blink and you'll miss it moment: Violet's mom gives Violet a look that says she's not sucking up to Wonka enough, which makes for a slightly better setup for why she takes the gum.

And yes, wonkas backstory got the thumbs up from Roald Dahl's widow. Also, Wonka has braces because it's a nod to something similar Tim Burton went through as a kid.

This opening sequence here is not meant to be realistic, it's supposed show how a kid would imagine a chocolate factory to look like.

Got to love how they show the realistic collateral damage something like a golden ticket hunt would cause on people like Charlie's dad.

Sad to see how despite how crushing it is to hear Charlie say they should give up the ticket for money, you can see they're already accepting it as the truth. They're so close to starving, and literally can't afford to think they can survive on chocolate alone.

1:21 The bucket house is actually the reason the movie got the green light from Roald Dahl's widow. Why? It's based off of Dahl's famous writing shed. It's common knowledge that Dahl hated the original, so naturally she was protective of any future adaptations. But when she saw the house, and found out they'd designed the Bucket house like that on purpose? That sold the deal for her.

Your girl is so wonderfully perceptive about Willy Wonkas character representing the child without supportive parents and the Children's characters representing the parents who spoil or give their children too much of something. Also, the humour? It's very British 😅 🇬🇧 ✌️😁

While I'm still gushing here, let me talk to you about all the Oompa Loompas. You ready? They were all played by one guy, named Deep Roy. He went over every individual shot you see the Oompa Loompas in, so they could get this effect.

This whole scene with Wonka and his father is based off when Tim Burton visited his dying mom and found out she made a scrapbook of all his movie posters. And now I'm wondering if that in any way influenced his work on Big Fish

Something else I never knew there was an explanation for: Violet's clothes don't rip because they're soaked with blueberry juice.

Notice how the delivery truck windows are tinted so you can't see the drivers? That's because the Oompa Loompas are driving.

According to people who suffer from flashbacks, this is actually a realistic depiction.

Count Dooku/Saruman being Willy's dad was fitting

Only movie to do this. Denying the Bucket family. And given what we've seen of Wonka's past, we understand why he does it. We don't approve, but we get it. Walked out on his dad at a very young age, and every adult he's come into contact with since has let him down or tried to take advantage of him. What reason does he have to think the Buckets are different? All it takes is that one moment to see Wonka's entire worldview shatter. He let the world make him bitter. He knew how bad people could be, but it also tainted his opinion of all other people in the world as well.

And yes, it's implied they made that puppet room just that day

Shows something you wouldn't think about: free advertising for life because the last ticket came from your candy store.

The chocolate room? All real.Grass, river, trees, plants? Real. Completely.

Dr. Wonka house is alone because he told Willy that he wouldn't be here if he ever came back... but he loves him so even if the town doesn't exist anymore the house is there for Willy ... That's what I always thought

Also goes to show how far they went to make you think the kids get what they deserve when they disappear. In the original they were just bratty kids. Here, it's like they're getting their just desserts. Haha.

The same kid from this was involved in another incredibly creative movie that seems to have half a dozen names... "Arthur and the Minimoys" "Arthur and the Invisibles" It's part live action part fully immersed CGI.

That's right, even after saying no, Charlie still hesitated. Yes, even though he wants away from his life of poverty, he still said no. He knows he's giving up the chance of a lifetime, and he really doesn't want to give it up. But he still does because he's so close with his family. Basically what I'm saying is because Wonka had no support system, he's now walking away empty handed.

I went to see this movie with my dad at the premier in sweden, we had made home made Chocolate fudge brownies and right as the door to chocolate river room opened we opened the tin and I kid you not the ENTIRE move audience sighed with longing 🤣. When we where walking out we heard a woman as one of the people she was with if she had just imagened the smell🤣.

The Gobstoppers are there to show that Wonka does actually have compassion, he just shows it the only way he knows how. Through his candy. And you also know this is made with compassion in mind, because it doesn't make any business sense.

Should read the source material, the story as Roald Dahl wrote it. Dahl wrote very weird stories full of dark themes: -Charlie and the Chocolate Factory -Matilda -James and the Giant Peach -The Witches -The BFG -Fantastic Mr Fox I've never really liked Dahl's writing; there's something unhealthy, chaotic, and vindictive about it. Most fantasy is organic and has its own recognizable logic, but Dahl's writings have a broken sensibility about it, something psychopathic about it. All that being said, Gene Wilder's Wonka and Tim Burton's Wonka work so much better than Dahl's. Dahl died 15 years before Burton's film was released, but was around for the 1971 Gene Wilder one. As I understand it, Dahl worked on the 1971 film script, but got disgusted with the studio's changes and walked off the project; that may have saved the 1971 film. Personally, I love both film versions. Burton added things that made the story make more sense (like Wonka's backstory). But Gene Wilder's performance was incredible. Choosing between Wilder and Depp is impossible. I think there's room for both visions of this mysterious and complex character Wonka. Loved the endless shouts of "What is this FILM!"

The actor that made all the oompaloompas had to literally film the same scene several times in different places to later all be place together. He said it was the hardest job of his life and everyone agree with that. Also, I'm not sure with this, but I heard the first time Johnny Depp crashed with the door of the glass elevator was accidental, but the second time he made it on purpose. And on a sweet note, the part of Willy's father having cuts of his son's archivements is indeed based on an event of Tim Burton's life. He said that he didn't have a good relation with his mother but he went to visit her when she was close to pass away, in her room she had cuts and posters of Tim Burton's movies, indicating that despite their rocky relation she always had faith in him and will archive his dream.

Be honest, if you were one of those grossly underpaid nut workers unwrapping chocolate bars for your boss' spoiled daughter, you'd be thinking about taking the ticket for yourself too.

Fun fact:Charlie's father works in a factory that makes "Smilex" toothpaste. This is a reference to Tim Burton's "Batman," in which the Joker unleashes lethal "Smilex" poison upon Gotham City by hiding it within personal care items such as toothpaste.

Say what you want about them playing the dementia trope for laughs, but according to people with family members who have dementia, they all learned to treasure every moment of clarity like it's the last one. Like Charlie's doing here.

Augustus IRL was actually scared of swimming, but managed to get through this anyway.

Naturally some things had to be updated to be relevant, and making Mike Teevee a genius because of technology was a brilliant way to do it. Also establishes he just did it because he could. You can see he got no real enjoyment out of it.

Augustus and Verucas songs are straight from the book.

This movie is pretty accurate to the books. The main change was the "adventure" involving the flying glass elevator where in the movie they sought out wonka's dad and repaired that relationship, in the books... it was not only AFTER promising ownership to charlie if was the whole second book where when trying to use the elevator to return to the factory they end up in space and shenanigans ensue, return to the factory and then MORE shenanigans ensue before a happy resolution

I do like at the beginning, she hasn’t been prepped or seems to know this story. Rare to not have someone go: “I LOVED the 70’s film, so let’s see what this one is about!”

Yeah, in this film, it's pretty obvious the children get picked off because Wonka knows what will get the kids to let their vices punish them. Augustus: make the first stop on the tour be where EVERYTHING is edible and let his gluttony be his undoing. After that, just poke around until you find him at the bottom of the fudge vat.... Violet: make the second stop of the tour be in the room where everything is untested and where testing anything, being "The First", will be an achievement. Plus, it's where that gum is still being tested, and of course the gum chewer will not be able to resist. Her punishment is getting squeezed of all the juice until she's back to nomal but forever altered, a metaphor for the preasure to compete and win having the ultimate life changine effect; similar to sports players pushing their bodies to the end only to destory them with life long afflictions. Verunca: She has her father abuse nut sorters to get what she wants, but when her father doesn't get her what she wants, a "nut sorting squirrel," she goes to get one for herself and pays the price. Her punishment is more kind, being dropped upon 3 weeks of rotten garbage like the rotten little girl she is. Mike: the most violent and least moral of the ticket winners who's surrounded by violence and believes he is the smartest person compared to everyone else. He gets placed in the room with the most dangerous equipment that can utterly destroy him at a cellular level, is hinted to be faulty and places him in the TV where Wonka flips from one channel to the next tossing him into danger left and right. He has all the violence he could want... but now he's in the middle of it. And it's Wonka who's flipping him around until the song is over and decides he's had enough torment and has reduced Mike to begging for help from someone. He might be the smartest, but this is something he can't talk his way out of. And his punishment is the most violent to be put in the taffy puller until he's forever altered, and it's a bit karmic given Wonka's bit about "I was never as short as you" have LOTS of weight. Mike has been reduced to being literally shorter than he was, then stretched to be taller than he was and left a freak. Compared to the others, there is NO fixing this. Augustus and Verunca just needs a bath, Violet could wear concealers to try and hide her blue skin, but... what can you do for Mike? Nothing. He's an 8 foot tall wire thin freak. You could try to get him to play sports maybe, but.... he'll have to look off forever. And of course... be thankful this isn't the broadway version where most of the kids met terrible ends. Augustus: Drowns and dies Violet: Explodes and dies Veunca: Is dismembered by the squirrels Mike: Just gets made a pet to his mother for the rest of his life where he has no say in anything.

I remember seeing interviews where Johnny Depp talked about how he came up with his portrayal of WIlly Wonka. He said that he imagined what George W. Bush would sound like if he were stoned.

The oompa loompas were paid by one person. They got multipled him to make it look like it was a clan. I think that was the biggest CGI in the movie.

Got to give it up for who ever was in charge of casting. It's like this Augustus leaped right off the pages of the book. Some fun facts about the guy that played him: he's actually wearing a fat suit, actually does speak German, and didn't speak a word of English when he was cast. Also, come on. You mean to tell me biting the ticket hasn't happened more than once? The fact that it's Augustus it happened to just adds to the character.

They literally could've gone in any direction with Violet. She's literally just described as being beastly, and having bad manners. Tim Burton just took that and ran with it.

I experienced the stories in an odd order. I read the book when I was 6/7 and became obsessed. The 2005 movie came out a year later and I loved it so much to the point where there was an occasion in elementary school when I think I watched this movie every day for a month! Then I was maybe 10 or so (2007ish) when I finally saw the Gene Wilder one. But not only is this movie personally more nostalgic to me, it’s also a lot more similar to the book, so that was another factor to my enjoyment

The Hobbit has a special place in my heart :) My Uncle bought this movie for my siblings and I several years ago. He also bought chocolate bars for each of us and wrapped them to look like Wonka bars-with gold tickets inside! (I am the oldest of 5 kids :) Such a sweet memory for me. Watching this with you both made me tear up because Uncle Steven passed away in August.

These two movies are very analogous to the truth that two people can read the same story and develop different visions based on the exact same words. Did you have any classes where the group discussed a book after reading? Remember wondering how someone saw something so different in the same pages? It is the essence of art, that varied interpretations will come from it.

I do prefer the '71 version because the father issues seem such an odd add. BUT I still enjoyed this movie overall, the darker feel and the modern props and effects are a great fit for Dahls story, it just doesnt come out quite as family fun film as the gene wilder one, which feels brighter and more fun and fantastical.

I saw the other version once, didn't like any of the characters, Charlie's reasons in that movie felt more like Veruca at least for me "I should get it because I wanted it more than anyone else" tell me that doesn't sound like a spoiled kid, and the grandad was no better when singing I have a golden ticket, trying to take it from Charlie like it was thanks to him they got it, I was really angry and dissapointed since I kept hearing how glorious it supposedly was

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will never get old. This version I just pretend doesn't exist, kinda like the Avatar movie "WHAT Avatar movie? I wish they would have made one!" type of thing. The original movie improved greatly upon the source-material, which is very rare to see. Makes me a bit sad to see closer to what it actually came from since usually the book is the best version, but in this case it was the opposite.
