‘There’s a Club if you’d like to go? You could meet somebody who really loves you.. So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own, And you go home and you cry, and you want to die.’ It never got better than that.
Strange thing is that Johnny Marr is only four years older than Noel but because he was only 19 when The Smiths became huge and 23 when they split up it seems like he has been around for longer. He’s been famous for nearly 40 years. He wrote this song when he was 20, which is incredible.
Well, he actually transcends his own source material here. That guitar work in the last two minutes.... pretty much the coolest guitarist of the last 35 years right there. Everything is about creating musicality and excitement. Nothing is about wearing technique as a badge. You understand that here, and you understand why Clapton’s Spoonful live is great, too.
Thats what i always said,,this song could never sound live!! But jon showed me i was wrong... Very good and they all played on point ... Good performance
That wicked guitar slide at 0:15 , etc. Sounds like a train locomotive passing a fixed spot at a super speed - creepy cool. Such great percussion and instrumentation. Superb track and performance!
Epic. How fking cool was that. I’m not entirely sure the immediate audience fully appreciates what they’ve just witnessed. Sheer class at work. Superb work Mr. Marr and a MASSIVE shout to the rest of the rhythm section, emulating Joyce and Rouke is no easy task. Fking brilliant lads.
I know right? In my opinion the rythm section of the smiths is the best part, obviously it is not the popular opinion, who cares? Joyce is my favorite drummer
Exactly! That is why I really liked the first few Moz albums with Rourke and Joyce. Once they left I never really liked Moz's music. I know total sacrilege on my part! They need to get back to together.
This is fucking BLISS. I love Morrissey so much, but Johnny as a solo artist puts Smiths' songs together so much better than Morrissey's band ever could. The way he has put this together is genius, I love it so much.
I didn't think he would have the balls to actually sing, but not only did he sing, he did one hell of a job. I mean, Morrissey did sing lead vocals on the original track of How Soon is Now correct? Because Marr sounded A LOT like Morrissey.
@@kelvinpeterson6169 I'm not denying Morrisey is an excellent lyricist . But you can absolutely get the tone and style of the Smiths music even if you don't understand the lyrics.
Just an absolute stunner of a rendition. Sonic as fuck, Johnny in the zone and his voice at least in this song comes very close to Mozz's sound. A blinder...
Will forever remember getting up, hungover as hell after a night of drinking, flipping on the motel room TV, and hearing charmed's version of the song... I never watched the show, but remember my cousin absolutely loving it when it was first airing, so to hear this song as the opening woke my ass up pretty quick. Crazy how music works
Johnny Marr is awesome. He does a fine job singing. But he is one of the greatest guitarist of all time!! The Smiths were the second greatest band ever!
After he perfectly bends the harmonic note up from the headstock the second time, he has this brief smile of satisfaction... That is just freakin' everything to me.
I saw him perform this live. Just amazing. Although I’ve seen Morrissey live too and his vocal is still as it ever was. Better still, I saw the Smiths live many years ago when I was a student in Brixton London. Now that was special. Good to see they are keeping their music alive for a new generation. Genius guitar man, top ten of all time.
Morrissey and marr were brilliant together the smith's are up there with being one of the best bands ever thanks for the songs the smith's 1982/to 1987.
Nah, this was back on Late Night when he was legit. He freaked out for Marr, Monty Python, and others who were his heroes. And those were some of the best episodes. He deserved the Tonight Show gig, but completely sold out for it.
I’m a huge fan of Edge and U2. But this performance makes Edge sound very pedestrian. Truly incredible guitar work by all 3. They crushed it. You can tell by Marr’s expression, he knew they were in the zone!
There's a 2019 video of Johnny Marr letting some kid in the crowd come up and play This Charming Man on his guitar while he sings it. Imagine that level of nervous.
The Smiths were Johnny Marr. Morrissey was just icing on the cake. The voice of that group was all Johnny. And his guitar playing is a master-class in guitar expertise. Smashing performance.
Totally disagree. Why have bands then? The lyrics you hear are Morrissey. Marr is amazing, but to say say JM was The Smiths is asinine. That is like saying Peter Buck was REM.
