What a lot of "critics" don't understand is that John represented an era of American rock and roll that wasn't pretty. I grew up with John, and as a drummer we jammed a few times as kids. He was a good guitarist. We grew up with do wop and AM radio. We all started out playing instrumentals like the Ventures, etc. Then came the British Invasion which was all about PR and marketing, big record company money, but the Dolls represented a big "Fuck You" to the establishment, which is one reason why they never got the recognition they deserved. Sometimes pioneers get fucked for being among the first. I'm not glorifying smack, I lost my son to it, and lord knows as a product of the 60s, I was "exposed" to enough shit that I'm surprised that I survived. We need another band like the Dolls to get America back off track again, because we're taking ourselves to fucking serious, and the Dolls proved rock and roll ain't about serious. Peace.
This song was such a natural for Johnny. Of all the Stones songs he used to do , he could have nailed this in the studio, and in his regular set . This is Cheetah on backing vocals , if you listen close , you can tell.
That photo of Johnny and Cheetah had to be from the Dead Boys show for the movie DOA at the Ritz in NYC. Johnny came out and was so wasted Cheetah started playing and Johnny saying "Hey, that's my song. I'm suppose to sing that" Cheetah kept playing and they finally had to remove Johnny from the stage. It was CLASSIC.

WISH HE WAS STILL HERE. MANY GREAT MEMORIES WITH THE DOLLS ,HEARTBREAKERS, AND SOLO GIGS. GLAD I WAS THERE.
I know this is a 2 year old comment I'm replying to but I'm glad I got to see him with The Heartbreakers,solo and with ex Hanoi Rocks members in The Cherry bombz. I saw him in the late 80's in a small venue and there was hardly anyone there. People seem to appreciate Johnny and his work more than ever. I feel sorry for younger people who never got to see him, or a lot of musicians we no longer have. I don't think there has been anything as exciting in music for a long time. I'm not just being nostalgic. Johnny Thunders was not a huge star and in England, he played small venues where he was approachable(depending on mood). I love The Stones but seeing bands in Stadiums isn't brilliant. I miss Johnny and I am so happy that he is bigger now than ever.

Great to hear you've seen him live! You probably cherish those memories, it was an amazing creative period for music. Lots of talent, D.I.Y. and good taste!
The photo of Johnny and Cheetah I believe was taken at the Ritz in NYC when they showed Kowalski's DOA and The Dead Boys played. Johnny came out completely fucked up. Cheetah started playing their debut because Johnny couldn't get in tune. Johnny was yelling "This is my song. This is my song". He was promptly removed from the stage.
The most impressive thing to me about this is their ability to keep going without getting thrown off, considering how out of time the singing is during the chorus! 😂

Yes, an emotional night but bad performance! Johnny never much of a musician, gotta say it like it is -- Stiv's bands (Dead Boys and Lords) were great musicians. The Sex pistols could not play or sing -- but you gotta love them too!
