Nintendo realized that someone was releasing a Metroid fan game around the same time they were releasing Federation Force and were like "fuck someone made an actual Metroid game"

It makes me happy that he kept with the development to create a gem like this. Well worth the wait

I thought the Torizo statue was one of the best fights in the game. I was totally taken aback when it sprouted wings and it was a unique way to utilize the space jump.

It's welcoming to see somebody review this game with a level head. Not saying Nintendo doesn't deserve the criticism, they're clearly behind from a business standpoint. But after reading a few reviews where they say Nintendo is clearly out of their minds, spelling doom and gloom for the series, it feels refreshing seeing someone like Johnny take a level headed approach to the review. Focus on the game and what it has to offer. I wish the Metroid series and all of its fans, happy 30th Anniversary! Here's to more adventures in the galaxy and beyond!

What most don't understand is that making video games happens to be a form of art. You can't rush art. AM2R may be a fan made remake of Metroid 2 Return of Samus, but it's a remake done right. Plus it was given something that was absent from the original: An escape sequence after causing a particular event to happen. Escape sequences are kind of a staple in the Metroid series.

I've never played a Metroid game before, this was my first one. I downloaded it like 4 days ago, and it kicked my ass when i first started playing. However, I adapted to the difficulty and actually beat it, and I'm using a keyboard, so that just made it even harder. The game is an absolute blast, I'll be sure to play other games in the series because of it.

I played AM2R a couple of months ago and it was AWESOME, it's a shame that Nintendo rejected this work... with all the Sonic Mania story I think Sega did what Nintendon't once more...

Am2r needs to be Metroid Cannon imo. The passion he had while making it is unparalleled.

As part of an enormous modding community myself, it's heartbreaking to see this kinda thing. Chances are Nintendo DID know about this and simply let it grow for a while. Nintendo of Japan actually encourages fan content like this. to a certain degree anyway. its why they leave most projects alone. however, when a project like this gets big enough to compete, they issue a DMCA. That's what happened to our previous mod "Project M" They really didn't care about PM until it started popping up publicly at tournaments. Final release hit 3.6, I believe it was a DMCA take down that hit the official release (i wasn't part of that team at that time) although they won't talk about it. Now an even larger mod has been released in its wake. Eventually with the hype, this one too will get a DMCA no doubt, but i'm sure nintendo already knows about it. I personally loved this game. it saddens me i can't seem to beat it due to a bug i encountered that crashes the game instantly when i get knocked down by the first bipedal metroid. I might do a lets play of it, if i can find a way to fix it. its clearly not affecting everyone.

I've been saying since it got released and shut down. With AM2R, it was in development for so long and there was a demo available for some time. Nintendo could have easily shut it down the minute development started. But they didn't. They allowed it to release for a little bit and allow it to spread onto the web. We all know including Nintendo, once it hits the net it's out there for good. They allowed the game and Pokemon uranium to be finished and released for people to enjoy, and protect their IP at the same time. After this whole thing, Nintendo has my respect for sure.

I found out about the development of this game in early 2008, playing the “Metroid Confrontation” tech demo many, many times over. The way I was reminded of it was when the news of it being DMCA’d by nintendo had come out.

With the knowledge of *THE FUTURE* looking back at how ambitious this was makes you appreciate it even more. It is going to be so much fun to compare AM2R with Metroid: Samus Returns to see different metalities and takes on the same game. Im probably gonna marathon all 3 versions in the hype of Metroid: Samus Returns for the 3DS and i cannot wait!

I can't contain my love for this game. Absolutely amazing. This might be my most memorable game of 2016, no joke.

I forgot how amazing Johnny's reviews of Metroid really were, and didn't realize just how much I'd missed the extra depth that these reviews always bring. Not knocking your other reviews of course, but there's something special that happens when a reviewer tackles the series he loves most.

Thanks for giving me the very slight motivation push I needed to check out this one, Johnny. Just completed it, and I can see it as something I'll replay for years to come just like Super, Fusion, Zero Mission and Prime. So good.

I've been recording over 600 voice lines for a GPS service, and this is the first thing I see when I reopen my browser after four hours of non-stop work. Thank you Johnny, this is just what I needed.

I can see the potential in fan games I really do, it gives the creators a potential career as a game designer and forge a path to success, but it breaks my heart seeing these fan projects where the developers poured their heart and soul into it get taken down by copyright...

This really serves to remind me that I need to play more Metroid games.

This was actually my first Metroid game, and it was a blast to play!

If I could only play one video game franchise for the rest of my life, it'd be Metroid. I've put so many hours into the series, and have so many warm, fuzzy memories. They never get old to me. I still feel the rush of excitement and elation of a great game many years later. It also singlehandedly birthed my obsession with sci-fi and ambient music, so there's that too.

Nintendo may have taken down this game but it's going to be spread everywhere. Nintendo screwed up and screwed up they did. At least with SEGA, they embrace fan projects like Sonic hacks and guess where that will lead... too bad Nintendo can't seem to embrace that.

I still wonder why zero mission isn't available on the eshop.

Zeta Metroids are very annoying and hit hard, but I found that Omega Metroids are pretty easy to exploit. Just wait in the designated hidey-hole, and you're automatically safe from all attacks, including his jump that causes earthquakes.

I'm so glad that you talked about the soundtrack. The Metroid series has always had a stellar OST.

johnny, i really dont wanna sound like im complaining, especially since you mentioned the difficulty settings in the video, but you went on a rant about how accessible the game is, when you can lower the difficulty and make it more accessible. to me when a game offers an easy mode, thats the game saying here's a version everyone can play and beat at any skill level. and when it offers a hard mode, i think ok, you wanted a better challenge, play me again with this on. you effectively negate your entire argument about accessibility when you factor in these settings. and you come off as contradictory. if casuals are having a hard time on normal they should lower the difficulty and improve they're skill to play harder difficulties. not numb the difficulty down a smidge for people who want a moderate challenge without having to play through the harder difficulties. i hope you understand what i mean im not trying to shit on you or your opinion but i just had to voice myself. fantastic review =)

John I remember your review of the original Metroid II: Return of Samus. That’s how I got into your videos. Well actually I got into your videos with Metroid Prime but I decided to check out your other Metroid videos and they were so damn funny and good.

Nintendo should really just pick up the game, hire the creator and distribute it... It's a crime to let a game like this be called a criminal.

I was actually new to the franchise and this was considered to be my very first Metroid game, and I have to say as difficult as it was I got better and soon it became one of my favorites. Makes me want to play the others to see how they're like.

Hey Johnny not sure if you will see this, but thank you for taking the time to review AM2R. Its so polished it definitely deserves to have the word spread. There haven't been many (if any at all) big name channels stepping up to review this. There are obvious reasons why this is but I'm glad you made the exception.

you know what I appreciate? that you didn't turn this into a complain fest, a shit on lottery about nintendo and there handling of metroid. all the other places made me want to not play the game. So happy a developer picked him up. Now making the second game in the Ori franchise. Now I gotta play it. But from what I have seen, it has some of his charm in it.

IMO the Torizo boss was amazing. It was a great way to get you to use your space jump that you just got.

You think that normal was hard? On Hard difficulty, I had to sequence break past the torizo to get an extra E tank and a few more missiles to fight him, spent 2 hours trying to fight him legit.

It's depressingly ironic that AM2R is the fan-game and Federation Force is the official Nintendo produced Metroid game. AM2R is honestly better than anything Nintendo has done with the franchise in the last decade.

am i the only one who thinks that despite not agreeing with nintendo shutting down fan games, that them shutting down this fan game was justified? because people could just play this FREE verison and not pay for the real verison.

I remember seeing a video where DoctorM64 demonstrated the Super Metroid-like Samus Screen. That's the reason I, *ABSOLUTLY* wanted it.

As soon as I played this game, my metroid muscle memory kicked in. While it isn't exactly beginner friendly, anyone whos played Super Metroid, or Zero Mission can jump into this game whole heartedly without a second thought. Its without a doubt one of the best Metroid games I've ever played. Right up there for me with Super and the Prime Trilogy.

Now it just saddens me how this game came out at the wrong time. Got right in the way of Nintendo's anniversary plan. Shame.

Just going to put this out here, but Nintendo has every right to take down this fan game. It took their IP and even the actual game then rereleased it without Nintendo's consent. The developer had it coming and knew what was going to happen. Anyhow Nintendo was in the right of shutting this down.

The difficulty is good as it is. They kicked my ass a few times, but that's how a game supposed to be. A very easy game would leave you some how dissapointed.

I consider myself a Metroid veteran. Cause I grew up playing Metroid Fusion, and when the Nintendo Wii came out, Metroid Prime 3 was one of the first games I ever played when it was given to me as a Christmas present. And in my teen years I bought Metroid and Super Metroid on my Nintendo Wii, and I managed to beat Super Metroid in a matter of days, but with the first Metroid I made it to Torian but never got to Mother Brain because I didn’t have the ice beam. My first mistake playing the first Metroid, screw the wave beam. I never played the original Metroid 2, but after seeing many playthroughs for it I felt that it always needed to be remade by Nintendo. And when I saw this video 2 years ago, I was immediately happy to find out that there actually was one made by a fan of the series. And I immediately installed it onto my laptop and I played the shit out of AM2R for a month. And I can agree that AM2R is an excellent Metroid game despite not being licensed. And when Metroid Infusion comes out I’m definitely gonna play that one as well. Metroid Infusion is gonna a remake of Metroid Fusion with a gameplay style similar to Metroid Prime.

One listen to the music of something like Metroid: Zero Mission, or Metroid Prime upon start up, and I'm immediately swept away to a place free of the harsh realities of life. The Metroid series honestly means more to me than I know how to put into words. I've had a tough life, but Metroid has brought me so much joy over the years. Anyways, it's getting late here. Glad to be among my people here. Hope you've all been having as much fun with AM2R as I have!

Heard about this game from your channel, and all I can say is THANK YOU! I just finished playing AM2R in about 9 and a half hours, and I absolutely loved every moment of it. I played it on normal difficulty, and I will say that while it is hard in many places, a little determination will get you through it. Personally I haven't played a Metroid game in a few years, and I was pleased with how this game helped me learn the controls on my own in the beginning. I highly recommend playing this game!

I was pleasantly surprised to see Torizo and Serris return, and both make sense since Serris IS from SR-388 and Torizo is a... actually, what IS Torizo? A creature disgusing itself as a Chozo statue? A Chozo defense system?

Thank you Jonny for suggesting this game and Metroid Zero Mission and Fusion. I am most likely getting both Zero Mission and Fusion on my Birthday, and my only Metroid experience is the Virtual Console Metroid for the 3DS, and Metroid Prime hunters. This series is always awesome, so I hope to be able to download and play this game. Maybe after Federation Force, if I get it.

AM2R was actually my first Metroid game and I played it on hard mode also. Its because of the game that I started to become a Metroid fan.

John, you can also set a beacon in your map. It's a great feature: It doesn't make it linear necessarily and it orientates you well enough how to get in a area of your choice. A Friendly heads-up before you find out years from now. ;)
