TheBlue Typhoon17 Yeah. I guess if they had the Gamecube controller or the Classic Controller compatible, the game would be somewhat playable. But alas...
***** Sorry, but I just can't help bringing myself to like this game. The controls suck, the graphics have aged, the level design can get stupid, it's just bad to be honest.
I loved the review, and I can't disagree with you. I wish Sonic and Sega would've gotten picked, too! But seriously, the control are atrocious and, while they get better over time, there are many people who aren't so patient with bad controls. My favorite thing about Secret Rings is the Night Palace music, Unawakening Float, and the Erazor Djinn battle. The entire fight just seemed so tense to me, especially after pushing through Night Palace. And yeah. F*&^* Dino Jungle's Egg Mission.
This is honestly my least favorite Sonic game. Most Sonic games with bad control I can at least trudge through and adapt to the slippery/stiffness. This... I just couldn't. It was too bad.
I personally think Sonic Chronicles was worse, even though that's probably because BioWare made it (yes, the same BioWare who made Mass Effect. How could they fuck up an RPG?), but Secret Rings is no better. I never got past the first tutorial level!
That line is so cheesy, you can almost taste it, but yet at the same time, it kinda sounds badass to me. I'm not really sure why, but I guess it has to do with the inflection of Sonic's voice at the end. Yeah, I'm odd.
***** In hindsight, it's that "handkerchiefs" line. At first, I thought it was Sonic's 3rd wish, which I still do think, but definitely not as much as the fouth wish.
I used to think this was decent back when I first played it in 2011, but after going back to it four years later and trying to beat it 100%........... ....this is now one of the worst Sonic games I have ever played.
TheBlue Typhoon17 I don't blame you. I do however think 06 had a bigger effect on the franchise, so it ultimately comes before Secret Rings on my top 10 shitty Sonic games list. Though I do find this piece of crap more frustrating, especially the control! Like, what the fuck?!
Omar Elmosrati 06 did have a bigger effect, seeing as it was the game that Sega claimed would bring the series back on top. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. However, my perspective on 06 has sort of changed over the years since I first got it. Aside from the Mach Speed sections, occasional BS glitches, the godawful story, and (shudders) Princess Elise, nothing else really made me lose my cool. The game is still shit, don't get me wrong, but I guess some parts of the game eventually grew on me and became guilty pleasures.
TheBlue Typhoon17 Don't forget the abysmal hub worlds, the art style hardly fit the Sonic series at all, there were WAY too much characters in 06, and pretty much every gameplay style that wasn't Sonic, Blaze and sometimes Shadow absolutely sucked. The voice acting was pretty off too, controls were very stiff however I'd take that over the control in Secret Rings anyday, useless upgrades.... Er, let's just say I could go on for quite a while. Clement's review pretty much sums it up. What really ruined Secret Rings for me was the control, if it was more like The Black Knight I probably wouldn't dislike it as much.
I agree with most everything he said. I think that having Sonic control with the nun-chuck in Sonic and The Black Knight was a major improvement and actually made the game very good. In fact I would like a continuation of the story book series on the Wii U. I feel that they could do something with the game pad. Sonic and the Greek Gods maybe? Anyone? Please?
i just remember years ago that someone of sega said "dont worry. it will be a trilogy" and we have yet anything that gives us reassurance as if if it hasent been forgoten or not. im actually a big fan of this storybook sonic idea. i think it has amazing potential! i personally would love sonic and greek mythology or sonic and the wild west. :)
ugh just dont make use of the gryoscope feature that shit fucked up in sonic lost world so yes if they do do a Sonic and the Greek Gods(which I personally would like to see as well) then I hope they just use a normal fucking controller
I'll be honest, I think Sonic and the Black Knight is not only better that Secret Rings, I actually enjoyed it and had a good time playing it. It Black Knight, after a while, it gets repetetive and slightly tidious, but I enjoyed the great soundtrack, the nice and somewhat colorful landscapes and just enjoying using a sword to destroy every enemy in my path. Even though Black Knight is also an automatic runner game like this game, you can actually stop and move back comfortably (in most areas) Out of both storybook games, I enjoyed Black Knight the most, but it's just my opinion
Showing the Metacritic scores for the Storybook games hurt me. Not just because it proves there was a time Secret Rings was considered passable, but HOW IS BLACK KNIGHT A WORSE GAME?! It's better than Secret Rings in literally every area!
Metacritic reviews are downright broken. I read reviews of Dota that make notes of where improvements should be, and give it 100/100; then I read reviews for games that, in my opinion are miles better and get 70/100. This wouldn't be a problem, except the reviews for the 70/100? "This is one of the best games I've played in a long time and would recommend it to anyone." "Favorite game, can't stop playing it, 80/100." "Literally flawless, 75/100" - Random "Professional" reviewers. Its simply stupid.
I beat this game and honestly I didn't think it was that bad especially since I managed to get used to the controls somehow. Perhaps it may have been I was a little more patient as a kid or maybe it's because I was so dedicated I couldn't stop without beating it.
It’s most likely because you played it as a kid. Granted, I’ve never played that game, but after hearing what Johnny and some other people have said about it, I highly doubt that I would get any enjoyment out of it.
I'm a video game pack rat, and so this is one of the few games I returned to gamestop. For me, there was SOME fun to be had with Sonic and the Secret of the Ring, but I'm glad someone else feels the same way about the controls constantly pushing you forward. That just killed it for me. I do like some of the music though. If it's not annoying, at least its catchy as hell. I mean this game and sonic 06 dished out some awesome rock anthems in my opinion.
This is how I feel about Sonic and the Black Knight. The game was a "so weird/bad, it's good/entertaining" type of game. The soundtrack is pretty catchy & the game looks good graphically, but those motion controls.... If it were just a brief gimmick rather than the games' main focus, the Storybook Series could have been much better. Those are 2 games I'll never put back in my collection
Drew The Conqueror of Worlds Running in a straight line, with awful buzz killing motion controls, set in a Arabian world, where none of sonic's friends technically don't exist. Yeah designed like a sonic game.
Sonic and the secret rings for me...is kind of a guilty pleasure. I acknowledge it's flaws and all but there is something about it that I just enjoy when I play it and I really like the Palace level before the finale of it.
Like for Sonic adventure 1&2, Sonic heroes, Shadow the hedgehog and Sonic and the black knight: all these games haven't an excellent gameplay but the story is interesting and that's why they are good.
It didn't prevent to a lot of people to recognize the potential of these games even if the gameplay isn't perfect. And if the story really didn't matter in Sonic games, we would have still and only Sonic against Dr Eggman for again and again saving wild animals.
I don't say it is useless but a bad scenario and a bad gameplay make a bad game unless (not totally) an unperfect gameplay and a good story like for Sonic adventure 1 and 2 for example.
Imagine if we ended up having the 06 port instead of this and turned out the port fixed the glitches and loading screens, ending up in an actual good game? Yeah, fat chance, I know.
I voted for Knuckles Chaotix Johnny =P Great review as always! I don't actually remember the game being half bad, but I haven't revisited it since my initial playthrough in 2007. At the time, I'm pretty sure I enjoyed it - I definitely considered it a huge step up over Shadow and 06 anyway.
thecommenter67 Good point, I can see a lot of potential there. Actually, if memory serves, Johnny's playing Chaotix for the August Sonic Marathon for Child's Play, so that should be fun. And I guess he'll get to reviewing it sooner or later =D
No, its too legendary to be reviewed again and it was way better than this game but Game Grumps did finish it last year and had plenty of laughs with the game.
It's unfortunate the story book collection failed because it was a very interesting premise of having sonic going through worlds based off the classic stories of old, it would have been at least nice to see a third game in the collection that had more polished controls and such
Plot Twist: Shahra was really Shantae and she was siding with Sonic to defeat the evil genie Erazor Djinn(unexpected Aladdin reference to Jafar) and Risky Boots from taking over Shantae and Sonic's worlds by using the secret rings and genie magic. Btw. That would be a cool crossover. Maybe Shantae could have a canon in the Sonic Universe.
archie sonic I think a lot of people would strongly disagree with you on that. Granted, I haven’t played Secret Rings, but I have played Black Knight and enjoyed it. And after hearing what Johnny and some other people have said about Secret Rings, I HIGHLY doubt that I would see ANYTHING of value in that game.
"Though I could really do without all the ingame notifications telling me to spend real money to get more shit" *immediately gets 3rd in-video Comcast ad* Mhmmmm...... (No hate Johnny, I get that you need to earn something but that was really funny and ironic timing to me XD)
>that intro part about Chaotix and Transformed losing Thanks a fucking lot, guys. We could have had one of two games (one of them is barely talked about, the other you all told him repeatedly you wanted him to review anyways) reviewed that he and people really haven't seen much of or at least with Chaotix, I would have personally had my thoughts on that put to rest cuz I've never played it. But no. THIS game had to win. *sigh*
Still, I loved what I played in Chaotix. I had to play the game in year-separated increments, and I feel this game is an infuriating, trial-and-error motion controlled festival of terrible graphics, level design and mission-style plot. Not as bad as Sonic 06, but damned near close.
I remember this game with sort of a bias, seeing how when I first played it many years ago, it was at my best friends place. I was small, and I had very little experience with any other sonic game -I didn't know about heroes till I got my own Ps2 ((yes, the crappy version)) and I didn't play the classic series until much later, same with the adventure titles and sonic 06-. And, to be frank, It wasn't the levels I really liked, hell I probably wouldn't remember them had not for me buying the game years later, along with colors as part of a cheep, bundle pack. The only thing I remembered fully was the boss fights, well..most specifically the Pirate boss, the Ifrit, and Af le-la wa-lela ((I think that's how you spell it)) who that boss was my all time favorite, till I fought against bosses like Yami, Doomsday Zone, Etc. Bottom Line, I loved this game as a kid, at least the bosses...but looking at it now, I can't even touch the game because of how bad/mediocre it is...
Rented this game recently and I LOATHE it almost as much The Great Clement loathes Sonic 06. The controls are obnoxious as is the constantly moving forward thing with Sonic, which makes Sonic handle like he's drunk. Shahra is a total wet blanket, all she does is nag you and angst all day long(not someone who should be hanging someone who is as energetic and non chalant as Sonic). I played the game for about a couple of days seeing how far I could progress through it, but I was mostly just irritated to the point of needing an ibuprofan. So I rage quit the game, yanked it out of wii and shoved it back into my mailbox. The only redeeming quality the game has is the soundtrack, Seven Rings in Hand is a great song even if it is played ad nauseam and I love the themes of Sand Oasis and Evil Foundry.
try it with a wii U. better control really... as for your experience, the gameplay is pretty bad but I'm getting confused at the whole "if its on rails its shit" argument. granted, the Wii made the impression but i'd likely enjoy the game better than the nightmare I had with Sonic 06. and the story is shit writing. Mr Naka really wanted to leave Sega.
Its wild that Erazor Djinn is the genie from the original Aladdin story, bc when I think Aladdin I think of the Disney movie. Imagine Erazor being voiced by Robin Williams' genie.
I remember actually loving this game when I started. Having to wander about missions to find the world rings was something I didn't mind since it felt something akin to exploration in a weird way. Unfortunately, as I got deeper into the game, control issues started to rear up due to the stages getting far more demanding with what they expected you to preform compared to overall responsiveness. I ended up rage quitting in the end out of supreme frustration because I truly did enjoy the game.
almost all of mario's main line games are great for their genre. it never really tries to go for the stupid gimmicks that the sonic franchise does, which ruins the future games. its like throwing something at the wall over and over again until you get something that's good, which a majority of the time its horrible
Garchomp Chump i know but im just saying is that mario isnt perfect franchise nor even gta cod uncharted etc or even sonic games imean whatever even best developers trying to make best games one day they will be fail like so its kind of natrual to see company like sonic team become fail same goes even to nintendo even they tried to make their best at making mario zelda etc games in other days they will have same problem like what sonic team capcom and others company does but what ever also dont get me wrong i highly agreed with you but then again im just saying sonic games has chance to surpass mario games or even other other platformers and yeah that all i have to say and sorry for my bad english too
+GyroTedi1 he'll regret that statement, really? a broken game with worse control schemes and a plot that is too convoluted is somehow better than secret rings which was ambitious, but at least it had "better control."
I'm not saying he'll regret it, I'm just a bit surprised due to how much Johnny hates the Shadow game more than 06, the way he reviewed those games were like he was urging to punch someone in the face. Yet prefers them than Secret Rings despite how infamous and hated 06 particular is. But honestly I don't hate those games.
GyroTedi1 well boom trumps all, still. and no, Sonic Generations 2 is a terrible name, just bite the cyanide pill Sonic team and make a SA3. why not, or will we see a Sonic colors 2?
+Haruhi Suzumiya Yeah, I agree Sonic Boom managed to become the worst "Sonic" game of them all both by critics and fans. That game ruined everyone for me. I guess Sega got scared in making SA3 since the fanbase is so divided, but I could see it could work, same with Colours 2.
apart from sonic flickies' island, sonic and the secret rings was one of my first sonic games, so stuff that drove others mad actually compelled me. this is still a great game, and deserves a bit more praise
I personally thought that "Erazor Jinn" wasn't that bad of a villan. He brought something new to the table that kinda got rid of Eggman's 'I'm going to rule the world'-thing. If only they could bring him back in a GOOD Sonic game again.
i agree, ill take sonic 06 over secret rings, I had an absolutely miserable time playing secret rings, havent tried sonic 06 yet but ik ill have a better time since I can ACTUALLY CONTROL SONIC
THANK YOU! I have been saying the same shit ever since I finally beat secret rings after 4 years of trying to beat it. It was so bad that's how long it took me. I will gladly and willingly pop in 06 no problem. I would rather open beer bottles with my dick than play secret rings. I dread the day when I have to replay it for RU-vid.
Johnny: "Why didn't you guys pick Knuckles' Chaotix?" Me: In the words of Todd in the Shadows from his "Justin to Kelly" review: "That's a good question. That's an excellent question." Seriously, why didn't you guys pick Knuckles' Chaotix? I was just as happy to see Johnny review this game at all, but why not request that he review a game that has been relatively unknown throughout most of the gaming world. That's two shocking decisions made by the fans: Sonic and the Secret Rings & Guacamelee!
Because we wanted to make Johnny suffer and people have differing opinions? Lord knows we like making Johnny suffer. It's a Sonic game he'll eventually review it. Hell he's playing it for the Sonic for a cause marathon thinger. Seriously it's really not worth the time to try and ask "why didn't you vote for this". If Johnny REALLY wanted to review Knuckles Chaotix he wouldn't have put it up for a vote, or at least he shouldn't have. ESPECIALLY in the pool with as bad of a Sonic game as Secrete Rings is. Everyone's going to want to hear his opinion on the worse game, that's just how sadistic people are on the internet. Plus he said something about it back in his Sonic marathon.
TheAntagonistGreen But that's the thing. Most people already had that notion of Sonic and the Secret Rings being a terrible game. I would have thought that curiosity, not sadism, would play the bigger role in the options that were given to us. This is just from my own personal perspective, but I was much more curious to see Johnny review Knuckles' Chaotix above this abysmal game and the kart-racing game (of which I had little interest). Plus, Johnny already reviewed games like Sonic and the Black Knight, as well as Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. Knuckles' Chaotix stands alone. As near as one could figure, it's the most unique out of all the other choices. "it's really not worth the time to try and ask 'why didn't you vote for this'"? The whole reason that I asked was because Johnny was the one who brought it up in the first place. It's a good question. You're right in the fact that Johnny will review Knuckles' Chaotix (and Journey) someday, but I guess what I'm saying is that it's a bummer that people didn't jump at this opportunity.
So people are stupid because they wanted to see Johnny review a game that you didn't? Don't be stuck up. Also, how can there be a wrong decision in something like voting a game for Johnny to review? He asked his fans to pick one of the 3 sonic games to review, and guess what? People wanted him to review this game. Johnny has said in this video that since sonic '06 people wanted him to review Sonic and the Secret Rings, so that explains a lot.
I’ve seen a lot of people say this game is great with better controls. The problem? This game throws in so many things that the better controls simply cannot fix with the biggest offender by far being world 4 with all of its 2D sections. I also hate every rampage mission because if you zoom past an enemy or your reticle decided not to lock on, you have to backstep so you can take the enemy out.
honestly, I liked this game a lot. I played it enough that I close to mastered the controls, and even got some power ups that made the game better and more fun.
Why would anyone be angered by Johnny's opinion on this game? It's clearly not fun for him, and if the five or six people out there that actually enjoyed this game see this, they can suck it.
Colin Parlett one guy told me that it was everything a sonic game is supposed to be... and I fucking spammed him with insults until he fucking blocked me because he fucking deserved it
Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil congratulations, you are the reason everyone hates sonic fans. What he deserves harassment for having a different opinion then you? Fuck off
Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil You sound far to proud of making an ass of yourself. You claim he attacked your opinion yet he had to block your spam? That doesn't sound like a victim, it sounds like a petty little brat who had his feelings hurt by someone else. No version that works you say? That is YOUR stupid ass opinion, while a majority of people may agree that doesn't make it the only opinion, nor does it make other opinions wrong. Someone else is allowed to like the motion controls. Just because you dont does not make him wrong. And spamming someone until they block you, regardless of the reason, is a childish, stupid thing to do. Again you sound like a child trowing a temper tantrum and a complete jackass.
tgsachris let me explain what happened, I was talking with one guy, he said he didnt try sonic generations because of the bad taste left in his mouth from shitty fucking secret rings, i told him that he shouldnt let that get in the way of him playing one of the best sonic games of all time, the other guy who blocked me came in and told me that I cant say that because secret rings is "the way sonic should be" and I told him every single flaw that the game had and how its nowhere near what sonic is supposed to be, I tried to reason with him and he himself decided to block me out of his shear retarded ignorance
Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil "one guy told me that it was everything a sonic game is supposed to be... and I fucking spammed him with insults until he fucking blocked me because he fucking deserved it" These two stories do not seem to match for some reason is all I'm going to say
***** Gonna be honest................i think secret of the rings is the worst sonic game ever. Its one of the worst video game experiences I've ever had. The controls are to sensitive as well as to complicated despite the simple idea of the gameplay, the level design for the most part feels copy, and pasted through out, and even though the art styled visuals look nice, I don't think it means that much, if I can't explore it or stop and look at it. Its easily the worst sonic game I've played next to 06, but at least with 06, I found some replay value out of it.
***** I've played it on both systems and used both controller's. Either way its terrible. On the bright side at least its not a big hyped up monster of horribleness like 06. Still between the 2, secret of the rings takes the cake.
***** So you got used to the controls. That's why some love 06. They can get around the bad level design and glitches by playing the game a million times but that dosent make up for the 1st few times you play it. Its bad game design.
Honestly, I would love for Secret Rings to get a remake and make it play like Unleashed onwards. The story in it is actually pretty good. It just needs to be backed up by better gameplay.
In my mind, I would imagine a compilation of 3D Sonic games with some of them remade for a better gameplay. I would add: Sonic adventure 1&2, Sonic heroes, Shadow the hedgehog, Sonic and the secret rings, Sonic unleashed and Sonic and the black knight. Sonic colours, Sonic generations and Sonic lost world are good but too recent to have a remake.
This is actually the first Sonic game I ever played, actually. I absolutely understand this review, but, I love running fast, and in the end, this game delivers. I found the music pretty good, too, especially the Night Palace.
I don't think so. I think it's because this, Sonic Colors (praise be that game), and Sonic Mega Collection for the GC are the only Sonic games I have in reality... Let alone, played, quite sadly... Oh wait, I did try the demos for Sonic Lost World, and Sonic Boom. Didn't get either.
@@SuperSolaris666 It is, but I'm not sure how else they could've done it. 1 breaks on rails, a tap of 2 does a rail hop which speeds you up, tilting the remote left or right is for rail switching. They could've used the D-pad but that probably wouldn't have been as "fun".
Well I wouldn't say you've made an enemy, but I personally never really had problems with the controls. I know I'm the odd one out, and for good reason, but I personally quite enjoy this title.
ShadowRush's Playthroughs i think of this when johnny praised 06 clement somewhere: i hear the parsing of the 06 clment satarts to pull out hsotgun johnny: but i am not saying they are good games clement: goood put gun back in his pocket and i don't give a damn about the spellingg rammar nazis
"If you're questioning why Shara's in tears after Erazor's sealed back up, well she apparently had romantic feelings f-..."Oh fuck, not again!"...Erazor."Oh.
This is, hands down, my most hated Sonic game ever created. Even though it nearly bored me to tears, I managed to beat Shadow the hedgehog Even though its story was so bad I wanted to punch something, I managed to beat Sonic 06 Even though its "music" almost made my ears bleed, I managed to beat Sonic Chronicles I stopped playing Sonic and the Secret Rings after I finished the first mission in the dinosaur world (I don't recall how it's called and, quite frankly, I don't care) because the controls are just god awful. Now, with that being said, E3 HYYYYYPE !!!!!!
I haven't played Secret Rings in a while, but it's easily my most frustrating Sonic game PURELY became it's totally on-rails. But to call it my least favorite is a stretch. Shadow, Labyrinth, Genesis, and Unleashed PS2 and Wii all take up that spot.
***** Heh we're kinda opposite. I didn't mind Unleashed Wii too much (Well...the daytime levels were the best part). But for me,Secret Rings was my worst experience excluding 06
I haven't played sonic chronicles yet, but why is it that I like all of the 3D sonic games, and I mean ALL of them. Secret Rings, black knight, '06, unleashed, Shadow. The only one I will never play because I don't have a 360 is free riders.
wait a second... Sonic was able to absorb 3 of the world rings cause he was angry... Asura gets a power boost when he is angry... IT'S SONICS WRAITH!!!
from the eyes of someone who isn't looking for good functionality, controls, story, gameplay, level design, doesn't mind shitty gimmicks, the repetition of the levels, shitty voice acting and dialogue, and everything else that makes a sonic game good, i guess you can call the games "ok". P.S. i grew up with these games. and a good part of actually growing up, is getting nostalgia out of the way of actual game design. it might take some time , but eventually you'll see what i see.
When you think about it, Secret Rings is the prototype to the 3D Boost gameplay. It's even got an equivalent to the modern Red Star Rings, and the model used for said rings in a different purpose.
I hope that the Black Knight review talks more about the story since it was far better and much more enjoyable (at least in my opinion). We at least feel a connection with Marlina's reasons... As opposed to Little Miss "OH! I JUST WANT TO BE WITH HIM AGAIN!"
the controls are actually really hard! I have also played it and the stopping-jumping thing is an nightmare. all-in all the game itself is okay, you actually do get the hang of the gameplay and it gets really fun
