Oh Mario, always the one to revolutionize the genre. But this is no longer 1996, and with a surplus of 3D platforming games out there nowadays; does Super Mario 64 still deliver on the goods? Let's grab that awkward controller and see!
Rewatching this after the announcement of Charles Martinet stepping down as Mario's VA. I wish him the best of luck on his new role as Mario Ambassador, and hope to see his legacy respected by his substitute. Godspeed, good sir.
Standard Trevor I tried copying my file with like 100 stars to another file but accidentally ended up deleting it all together... i was a devastated little boy, and so i locked it up in a chest after that and never opened it again.
The comedy here really did shine. Your jokes and delivery in this were fantastic - and it complements the tight analytical writing perfectly. Ya keep on getting better, Johnny - keep it up!
***** Well Caddy is whating Somecallmejonnhy, and he knows PBG, SpaceHamster and some of normal boots, maybe jonnhy can be invited to an PBG's Hardcore! if this happend its gonna be awsome!!
Witch is the date people thought they saw in that Star monument in the fountain. Basically they made the rumor a reality by assembling Luigi and modding it into the game then releasing it at 241
3:00 On August 21st, 2023, Nintendo of America announced on Twitter that Martinet would be retiring from providing voice acting for the Super Mario games but would continue to work at Nintendo as "Mario Ambassador"
+KidSnivy69 "Johnny Vs." is now "Mario Vs." Every week, Mario tackling a different game, doing livestreams, charity shout out and convention announcement.
"When an eel lunges out" "Unagi?!" "*lower pitched godzilla roar*" "That's amoray~! Get it? A moray eel? I said a funny!" "Fuck you!" Easily the best moment of this review.
Well, then again, unlike Super Mario 64, at least in Donkey Kong 64, you don't lose the collectibles you've gathered if you die in a level, you actually keep them. The game doesn't punish you that way.
Eh, I still do enjoy the game. But this is coming from a guy who grew up with collect-a-thons, such as the two aforementioned games and the Banjo-Kazooie series.
+Hylian Alchemist Thats fair. I dont hate DK64, but I dont know if I could call it a bad game. Im not a fan of collectathons anyway, so it could be a bias.
This is my favorite 3D Mario game. It's so simple, yet speaks volumes. The jump to 3D was moreso a jump, skip and long jump into a portal. The characters were all memorable, the music is fantastic, the levels all had their own unique charm and the infamous "So long, Sir/You/Gay Bowser!" It's classic! I've beaten this game so many times, I've lost count. And I could pick it up right now and collect all 120 Power Stars again with no hesitation. It's simply perfect, in my eyes. Great review, Johnny!
It's much MUCH harder to notice when playing on the N64 as opposed to any other platform. Mario doesn't switch to his low-poly model until he's too small to render in detail with the N64's low resolution. By the time he's far away enough to switch models, he's already just an indistinguishable handful of pixels. It's only noticeable when you're playing on an emulator, like the virtual console or a PC emulator, that you can clearly see Mario's lower-poly model thanks to the higher resolution.
cb2198 Not the case with sprite flicker. You could definitely see the effect on CRTs, albeit a bit muted compared to newer TVs. In many games, it's intentionally used to give certain sprites the illusion of transparency. The only time sprite flicker doesn't show itself properly is when recordings are running at a frame rate lower than the game itself.
Why?!? Wall jumping is probably on of Mario's easiest 2d and 3d moves to pull off. Don't meant to be mean but, it just wasn't that hard for me to pull off.
After hearing Charles Martinet is retiring from voice acting, I came straight back to this video. Johnny: If for whatever reason Charles would leave his role as Mario, the next guy would probably just do his best to simulate Martinet's voice. PlatformChef: We will find out soon enough when Super Mario Bros. Wonder comes out.
2:50 Wow. It’s crazy that Charles stepped down as the voice of Mario and friends latterly one day after I left the film studio that I was a part of. I hope that he finds success in his next chapters.
Honestly, it's not THAT hard to find someone else to do an over-the-top high pitched italian accent. It just...won't be the same wothout him. Honestly, his voice started sounding raspy in MK8, so I think his age is really taking a toll...
+66777jason Typical mobile phone controller prices: Nvidia Shield, $59.99 Mad Catz Micro, $49.99 Moga Ace Power, $19.97 Razor 7 Bluetooth, $79.99 8BITDO NES30 Gamepad, $33.29 Mad Catz L.Y.N.X., $289.99 But there's ONE FATAL FLAW WITH ALL OF THEM: *_NOT ALL, OR EVEN MOST OF THEM, ARE COMPATIBLE WITH THEM!_*
Mario: "That's a nice computer there, can I have it???" Johnny: NO!! LMAO Johnny, you are literally my favorite video game reviewer! xD This being my favorite Mario game, is great! The Gameplay, dialogue, graphics, and its just plain fun to play. It hasn't aged too well though...:( Oh and btw, bring da Mario head for another review!
Super Mario 64 was my childhood for me. It was the first game along with Mario Kart 64 the family received with the Nintendo 64. At first, I didn't respect too well, but not too long after receiving the game. I respected it and tried to complete it after I finished the game. Problem was I would play other games and when I returned, I came to find out my file was deleted. Dire Dire Docks is one of my favorite Mario of all times. So many good memories with this one. The original N64 cartridge will always be the definitive version for me as the DS version felt like the gimmicks were shoehorned in.
This game was the perfect mix of challenge, fun, and creepiness. I played it when I was younger and I got this sense of the danger Mario was in. I mean those creepy paintings that he has to go through, the practically empty castle - save the toads and the ghosts, and everything is basically out to get you. And I loved every minute. The minigames were also a marvelous addition.
I don't know. If I had to choose between this and Crash, I'd definitely pick Crash. As revolutionary as M64 was, there's still the horrible camera and loose controls. I wouldn't say I'd play Crash 1 over it, but 2 and 3 wouldn't even be a choice.
Is it bad Sunshine is my favourite single-player platformer? (Multiplayer might goes to 3d World). I loved the vacation theme and actually liked the voice acting. I'd be all for a sequel that irons out its flaws, with possible multiplayer and a fleshed out story. But Sunshine really tried to do something different.
Sunshine was great. I liked it better than 64. And yes, I played 64 first. I like Galaxy 1, 2 and 3D World were better than Sunshine IMO but, I'd play Sunshine over 3D Land.
awesomeguy2009 well it kinda depends. The 64 is much smother but it is kinda dated. The ds version looks better, and has more to do, but like johnny said, the control is still kinda stiff, even on the 3ds. So it depends on if u would like less to do, but a smother control. Or more to do, and r ok with controls that r kinda stiff.
I liked Sunshine. Honestly I can agree with people that Sunshine is kinda bullshit for completions sake, but honestly. It's so much more interesting than Mario 64's levels. In a Mario 64 level I feel more like I'm going through a level where in Sunshine I am more pulled in by the level. I think the fact that Isle Delfino was the Hub World was a bad and good idea. Good in the sense that it was neat to explore and find hidden things, bad in the sense that you shouldn't be getting Shine Sprites from the inhabitants. Shines hidden in the town, fine, being given to you by Piantas? Inexcusable.
Agreed, plus the fact you buy them with blue coins was always really weird to me. I just loved how all the main characters were more developed in this game, you felt that they were really all in this together when they moved around town (and let's be honest, you were the only one with F.L.U.D.D to clean the town). It also would have been nice to have FLUDD be earned through the story, rather than just sitting on the floor at the start of the game. Even so, the music, theme, levels and so forth were things I loved. They even changed the common enemies like Boos, Bullet Bills, Bob-ombs, Koopas, etc. To show you weren't in the Mushroom Kingdom and they were different species for a more tropic setting (yet Galaxy had the same designs even though it was in space).
Yeah, buying the Shine Sprites shouldn't have been something you had to do, in fact the blue coins basically don't even need to exist. I know people argue that games have pointless collectables, well the blue coins are a collectible that shouldn't have a point. What would have been cool is if you could use blue coins for upgrades to F.L.U.D.D. And that the Fludd attachments were instead switchable instead of having to find them in the levels. Less situational than the hats in Mario 64, but still fairly situational. I feel like Galaxy is just riding off the, space gravity gimmick. Don't get me wrong, Galaxy is fun, but I spend half of the time in a level just being launched to and from planets. The area's a nice to look at, but I don't feel like there's any need to explore. And if you've ever played it with a second player the game gets really easy cause the second player can essentially just freeze enemies.
I will always respect Super Mario 64 for what it did for the franchise, but I would play any 3D Mario game except 3D Land over 64, as well as Super Mario World. I don't see it as a bad game, but more of an old classic, that was indeed a good game at launch, but has gained issues because later games improved, not because it was bad. I feel the same about Pokemon Red and Blue, as well as Ocarina Of Time. Not bad games, but old classics that have been improved upon since release.
My heart goes out to Johnny for inevitably 100% clearing Sunshine when he plays it. The blue coins are always far worse than you think they're going to be. ;_;
Very good review of Mario 64. I knew there were parts about the game that made me feel uneasy about it, and you hit the nail on the head for all of those points. You're also about to review my all time favorite Mario game. I look forward to what you have to review. Even if it is my favorite, I take note of it's flaws as well. Can't wait, Johnny! Also congrats on getting YT verified. :)
N64 version wins in terms of controls and audio quality, and DS version wins in terms of graphics and bonus content. Ultimately though, I like both versions equally.
You didn't mention the drop kick. You do it the same way as the long jump but you press b instead of a. The first drop also lets you bounce on lava and quicksand which is pretty cool.
9:57 Yeah... The eel scared me shitless too as a kid! Well played Johnny, and a great review! As for Super Mario Sunshine... SPOILERS Have A Great Summer Vacation! END SPOILERS...
I can tell Johnny isn't looking forward to Super Mario Sunshine. I don't understand why it gets so much negative criticism. It is arguably one of the best 3D Mario games and one of my personal favorites.
I watch Johnny vs the World videos, SGBLikestoPlay, Clementj642, and Brainscratch more than I watch any TV show. Keep it up, these reviews are always great!
