Lots of you asked, so here we go. The time to start reviewing some Zelda games has finally come, and we're starting with the first game in the series; it's the Zelda Marathon, folks. This particular game is well over 25 years old, but it is responsible for setting quite the benchmark during the NES days. Does that necessarily mean it's still a good game today? That's what we're gonna find out today.

Entering Link's name as "Zelda" automatically starts you in Hard mode? Haha, I wonder if it's some kind of punishment for thinking Link is Zelda.

I was one of those kids who played this game in the 80s without a guide and actually managed to beat it, after many frustrating years of course. I'll never forget the feeling I got when I was randomly bombing bad guys in the mountains and stumbled upon a door hidden within the rocks. I walked in thinking, "Awesome, another cave with money or a heart container." Then that dark level 9 music started up and a mix of excitement and fear hit me like a ton of bricks. I immediately ran out of the room to get my dad for assistance and, together, we beat The Legend of Zelda for the first time.

+Krebons1200 That's why I think that it's good how Zelda games pay more attention to the story nowadays. I can't speak for everyone, but I need a context for my quest. That's the same reason, why I like worlds with boundaries, instead of worlds that are completely open from the get go. You can't build a believable world without certain limitations in my opinion.

Zelda may be my favorite franchise, but I have to agree with Johnny here. This game and Metroid for the NES both lengthen their run times by sending you on wild goose chases. I have to admit that I like this game more than Metroid, because there are at least SOME hints. Yes, the point is to explore. Yes, it was part of the era it was released in to make a short game longer by giving no direction, but I hardly find that to be completely fair.

This is the first honest and unbiased-by-history review of this game I have seen. I'll explain. I am a huge fan of the Zelda series from the SNES onwards. There is a difference between hand holding, being secretive and just being unplayable without tips and tricks to help the player. The original Zelda would have been unplayable without hearsay, Nintendo Power and the game manual. The other Zelda games were secretive in terms of giving tips throughout the game to hint at locations of items etc. This is not hand holding - this is the sign of a good game. I honestly think that if you play this game with no bias, no manual and no external hints and tips (just relying on tips from NPC characters in-game), players regardless of whichever era would have a less than enjoyable time playing the original Zelda game.

I think I have to agree with the whole "Guide Game" thing. There was no way I could have beaten Zelda 1 without it. But despite how frustrating some of the enemies could be or how bland the dungeon design is... I kind of like this game. I like that you can choose the order you complete the dungeons in, and that you're really encouraged to explore for items to make the game easier. It's something I would like to see prominently return in the Wii U entry coming in 2014.

In other videos about Zelda 2 for NES, old-timers who played through as kids remember the social aspect of the game. Friends would play and share hints. I had to share a console and TV with my older brother. We watched each others gameplay and of course were able to combine time on the same game if we wanted. Sure, there were heart containers I never found, but I think I had found dungeon 9 before I was even able to make it in there (so before I had gotten the ladder). The only thing I never did was find and complete all the dungeons in the second quest.

Not all of them, mind you, but at least motherfuckers don't lie to you like in Castlevania 2
@EURIPODES

Many games back then were designed to be brutally difficult. Take arcade ports for instance. Even if the game was already hard. A good port would be made even harder to make up for the fact you essentially had unlimited quarters. When I was a kid playing Zelda I found pretty much all the secrets except the last dungeon. So I completed the tri force but never beat it. Of coarse there was the official nintendo help line you could call if you got stuck but that cost money. We circumvented that. Our local game store had a bulletin board you could write notes asking for help. Other customers would read the notes and if they knew how to help you they would call you and give you advice. The '80's was cool like that.

Bravo, Johnny. Please ignore any fans who can't stand to see disrespect to any main member of their pet series. It was refreshing in context to see you ripped off by a door repairman, too weak to lift the Magic Sword, murdered by Darknuts, bombing the wrong place even with a hint and powerless against Ganon. Please don't tell me none of the clips of Blue Darknuts were from the second quest. It would have been hilarious how you found those secrets with no hint whatsoever if this game weren't so iconic. And to everyone else, there's a difference between honoring something that's responsible for everything you enjoy today and bowing to it as if to an immortal, perfect god.

Baigandine L But still not enough. In A Link to the Past, the Silver Arrow was still needed to finish him off, but it could be obtained much earlier and you could escape your fight with Ganon and get a hint as to your need for it. Here, there was a hint back in Level 8... in the Japanese. In English, the Spectacle Rock hint got bumped up there and that bullcrap about the tip of the nose took its place. And if you didn't get the arrow before going to Ganon (there were no boss doors and plenty of invisible cracked walls) there was no way out without dying.

This and the Original Metroid, were victims of Early NES. Metroid got a Remake, so logically, Zelda 1 should get a Remake at some point. The game isn't bad, but it could really do with a Remake, that adds in some features from future games. Priority #1-Sword swipe in all directions, with a swing. Again, NES limitations were the main factor for this.

Elements of the game may not have aged well, but as someone who grew up with this game in the late 80's/early 90's, I can tell you that it wasn't as much of a "guide game" as you think. Gaming has just evolved to a point today to where we expect to have guides and tutorials for our games. And that's fine, I'm not going to be one of those old fogeys who calls modern gamers "soft." But even as 9-year olds, my friends and I managed to eventually beat this game. Using info passed by word of mouth and little tips you heard around school--it was cool. Props to my dad for figuring out how to make Ganon keep reappearing so I could finally hit him with that damn arrow. Ha. Allegedly, the Wii U Zelda is going to be very open world again, somewhat returning the game to its less linear, more esoteric roots. But since we now have the internet, I doubt anyone will notice much anyway. At any rate, this game was revolutionary for what it did for gaming, and I can still pick it up and enjoy it today.
@KidSnivy69
@KidSnivy69 10 лет назад
It more a fact this is a different time, in the 80's/90's most games didn't hold your hand. No online forums, playthroughs and everyone was use to it. Today's gamers on the other hand are use to being told where to go and what to do next and with that the games of the past to new gamers aren't as use to thinking outside the box. So technically its and isn't a guide game (it just depends on what era you began gaming)
@frozenaorta
@frozenaorta 10 лет назад
KidSnivy69 Yeah, I was trying to avoid saying what so many gamers of my generation have already said regarding the condemnation of today's "pampered" gamers. And it's true that the internet and--even worse---in-game tutorials have probably softened today's gamers. Difficult games do still exist today, but it's impossible to create this specific sort of difficulty anymore. Johnny (who is about 5-6 years younger than me) complains about the vague gray map for the overworld. But that was done intentionally. The mystery of Zelda was something very intriguing at the time. We had to rely on Nintendo power forums and word of mouth from friends rather than the internet. It's a different form of the same thing, but what separates today's gen is the same thing that defines today's world. Every answer and every solution has to be available IMMEDIATELY. I'm not saying one way is better than the other, but I was a little surprised that Johnny, someone who excels at retro games--was so put off by the style of this classic game.
@KidSnivy69
@KidSnivy69 10 лет назад
frozenaorta The only things I disagree with is the map, just because it was intended that way doesn't automatically make it good or fun; and Johnny himself has mentioned while he play Zelda he isn't the biggest fan of the series and something tells me this wasn't his first Zelda game. Other than that I agree with you
@frozenaorta
@frozenaorta 10 лет назад

Can I just say, I am getting sick of all the gamers of this generation getting hated because games today have too much handholding.i mean, I'm a huge zelda fan and I like a lot of classic games, but too many people overlook the numerous flaws that some retro games have because they include one key principal or feature that was unheard of for the time. I think that all modern iterations of classic game franchises have improved on their predecessors very well, but they get a lot of hate because people will just compare them to the original, say it's exactly the same, or say that it isn't as good as the original because of one reason and nothing else. It's fine if you prefer a lot of the classic games to the newer ones, but I think it's ridiculous to write off every new game in a series as bad and say that it'll never be as good as the original. I think that the flaws in most classic games are usually covered up by a lot of nostalgia, although that's not always the case as there are some retro and classic games that still hold up very well ( sonic the hedgehog 3, mega man 2 , super mario 1- world, etc.) I'm not saying all classic games are bad. I'm not saying that everyone is blinded by nostalgia. I just think that a lot of classic games can't really hold a candle to their newer entries. I defiantly prefer skyward sword (or any zelda for that matter) to the original zelda, I loved super mario bros u and 3d world and galaxy 1 and 2 a little bit more than mario 64, world, and 3, and Castlevania symphony of the night blows the original nes titles out of the water for me.

@MysteriousStranger50 10 лет назад
Uh, you miss the point, games had different standards back then, you cant just come out and compare a game from the 90's to a game from like 2012 then claim that classic games are flawed in comparison to a game that came out 20 years later on new tech people didnt think would exist... Yeah they had flaws, like all games, but they had to at that point, sure, you can compare fun factor, and I sense nostalgia-blinding in a lot of people, but it hardly makes sense to compare skyward sword to LoZ, then say SS is much better thus LoZ isnt... of course it is, its 3D, looks better, performs better, is bigger etc. When people say classic games are better, they are talking about principles, ideas, mechanics, things most modern games lack; -Rare to see a new idea -Poor mechanics in comparison -less love and care for the product -EASY MODE GENERATION --Hand holding out the arse Most modern games today seem to be made to hook you, how many games are FPS's and how many have you level up and unlock stuff, mentally forcing you to want to keep going, old games didnt need that, the 'Fun' factor just is not as strong in most modern games anymore. its all about £$£$£ and DLC. I rarely feel challenged or demanded in games, and rarely feel that spark that classic games had. Shovel knight was a great throwback to the classic generation, that was a nice "modern-classic" game and was really well made. it also had a unique idea and mechanics, and was structurally sound. As I said though, there is some rose-tint-nostalgia in gamers, like the LoZ, some say it is the best Zelda.... to that I laugh. Some, particularly that game, bring up modern handholding and say LoZ got it right... hardly, that game had too LITTLE direction, no guide, but also no sign or message pointing you in the right path. How it should be done is set me on the path, make the 'path' obvious to where it goes enough that im not lost, but hidden enough that I need to think and work out what I need to do, make me find the path that im on, or find where it goes, but make the path clear to where it is. Let me deviate at my will, let me choose to explore, but dont force me to aimlessly wander with no path, nor, restrict me to the path. Show me the tower on the horizon and say "go there" and let me forge my own exploration, just point me. (If any of this makes sense in terms of games) If Zelda 1 had a sign, pointing you to the first dungeon, a man who tells you where to find some stuff (Roughly) before you go to said dungeon, slight cracks on the wall to show where to bomb (or, hints from people for the really hidden stuff) and signs on what tree to burn... then, once the player has beaten dungeon 1, THEN open up, kind of like a tutorial section. Dont just have an inconspicuous wall, or one tree in a forest a secret, either have a visual clue, or, give me a hint somewhere else, "When I was young, I used to play in this cave by the shore, its gone now, I swear it was by the tree just a few steps away" "My granddad said he hid money somewhere in this forest, south of the mountains, the only clue he said is "look for the arrow, and do the opposite" but Im not sure what that means" Point is, both gens had issues, sure, but, standards changed, and said old games where typically (Not always) structurally and mechanically better in comparison.

" old games where typically (Not always) structurally and mechanically better in comparison." Yeah, for me I'm rather conflicted on classic games, some I enjoy, some I don't, both difficult and easy, console and arcade games and all that. Sometimes I can like a game with it's flaws, sometimes I can't. I'm a bit all over the place with them. Some I play to this day still. Modern games, can be massively cheap, flawed and buggy too, but even when they're not, I tend to find them really bland. Of course there are always exceptions, I do like some newer games, just not that many, even a lot that try to emulate older ones as it happens. Generally I like gaming best from the early 90's up until the late 2000's with others on either side of that. but it is the case now that each year I play less and less new releases.

Shooting a beam from the sword and how that is handled raises many philosophical topics to my mind. It's an ability that rewards playing well while punishing playing badly. It is similar to nearly every video game, in that players who play very well reap great rewards while others must struggle until they can learn to play very well. It's a way that video games really connect us to everyday life. The wealthy have the skill, knowledge, and mindset to play the game of money the best while those who need money the most have little idea how the game is play. Or in terms of learning anything only those who put in the work can play the game of life well enough to conquer it in order to reap the rewards. Well done Zelda, you taught kids how the real world works. Well done.

I played GBA version of this game, and back then when I played this, I was also stumped with no clue what the hell I was supposed to do next. My gaming taste relies on games that are linear, or in the open-world games having some clue to give me an idea where I need to go next.

This game is kind of old school. It was basically a social experience, because you were supposed to talk to your friends about stuff like this, and if they knew anything, they would give you tips. Unfortunately, I didn't get to play this game for myself until I was a teenager, and I didn't have that many friends at that point, let alone friends who still owned an NES, So I too had to look up a guide for a few things. But I can still say beyond the shadow of a doubt that I enjoyed this game, warts and all

In Zelda 2; you have to start all the way back to Zelda's Castle instead of just starting back at the dungeon or other outer areas u entered.

I partly agree with this review. While I enjoyed the first 4 dungeons, dungeons 5-7 is when the game started to annoy me and dungeon 8 and 9 are just straight-up bullshit. I don't care if anyone has beaten it without a guide before, the last part of the game is so fucking cryptic and I had to use a guide for level 9. I spent hours searching for keys (because how the fuck are you supposed to know there are 2 items in level 8), had to farm for rupees and bombs and the enemies drain your health every 5 fucking seconds. If you're not exploring but rather farming it's boring. Also it's not hard or challening, but rather irritating. But my biggest problem is the bombing of the walls. There is no indication whatsoever where to bomb the walls. I wouldn't have a problem with that if you could carry more bombs, like 30. If the games wants me to look at every possible spot and burn every possible bush I should be able to have a bigger arsenal to do so and not farm every 20 minutes because I ran out of bombs. And also there are some walls that have a room next to them that you can't bomb and some where you can bomb. That's fucking stupid. So basically sucessfully bombing a wall has 2 factors, one which you can learn about from the map and one that's impossible to guess and is bascically just try and error.

I honestly couldn't get into this game. It just throws you into this random world, leaving you to wander aimlessly for a majority of your game time with absolutely no clue on what to do or where to go, complete with the crappiest excuse for a map ever in a video game. Not only that, but the land of Hyrule itself isn't all that interesting to explore. A lot of the secrets in this game (some of which are mandatory to beat the game) are hidden behind walls and bushes that look no different from any other wall or bush. The only way to discover and solve these secrets and puzzles without a guide is through a ridiculous amount of trial and error. You'd literally be searching *everywhere* on the map, bombing and burning (with a limited supply BTW) *every* single square pixel until you eventually get it right. That isn't fun exploration, that's a tedious pixel hunt. If I had to do that, I'd rather just play A Link to the Past, which has a better map, a more versatile Link, more memorable set pieces, and hints that are actually helpful and understandable. I can respect the original LoZ for what it did for the gaming industry, but when I look past what the game did and look at it from a normal standpoint, I don't think it's aged as well as Super Mario Bros. Not a terrible game, but definitely a product of its time.

I understand your point of view about how from the perspective of a modern gamer you would want a guide to fully enjoy the game, but when this game came out back in the 80's part of the fun of a game like this (the likes of which no one had ever seen before basically) was that you could make your own maps, try bombing and burning everywhere, and then share the secrets you found with your friends on the playground. In my memory, this was one of the first games where a lot of the secrets and tips traveled by word of mouth through ad hoc school ground networks of young players. There were also magazines and player's guides back then which one kid might have and bring to school to share with everyone else. It was just a different era of gaming where games were more rudimentary and didn't hold your hand as much as the games of today. I would hardly call that bad design, people were just experimenting with new forms of games that didn't exist before and relying on manuals (which couldn't be put in the game back then) and word of mouth to increase a game's playability and mystique. You can't really expect this game to live up to modern standards for design and explanation. Part of it's hook was that it required a lot of exploration and experimentation to beat.
@RetroRampage

I honestly REALLY dislike this game. I feel that there is a point where guidance is needed. This game gives you almost no feedback, and unless you have some help from an outside source, you are not going to have fun. I never believe anyone when they say they beat this game as a kid with no walkthroughs, because kids are stupid, and there is NO way they would have known where to find certain dungeons. And when people say that this game is well designed it really pisses me off. sure, secrets should be hard to find, but what about the things you NEED to do in order to progress? Why do I need to burn every bush in the god damn game in order to find the ONE that has a staircase? Why do I need to place a bomb on every wall to find out which one had a dungeon? Some may argue that this is the reason its fun, the exploration, but that's not exploration, its tedious, pointless, and NOT fun. The later zelda games are much better.. in fact, besides the cdi games, I'd say Zelda 1 and 2 are the WORST Zelda games.
@HalfMoonProphet
@HalfMoonProphet 10 лет назад
I'd understand your complaints if this were a game released today, but it's not. It's essentially the first of its kind--an experiment--so of course it would have some serious flaws, and that goes for Zelda II as well, which was also very experimental. That doesn't change the fact, however, that the game is genuinely fun for a lot of people (who know what they're doing), and honestly, I think you need to recognize how important it is. At least a third of the games we have today would not exist if Zelda 1 hadn't set in motion the evolution of gaming. Gaming without Nintendo would be like paintings without the Renaissance. And as for the fans who praise the game based on design, just let them believe what they want. Some people actually enjoy getting lost in a game's overworld, like me when I used to play this game on GBA. I greatly appreciated the freedom of exploration, I liked the fact that nearly every square had something to do on it, and as I explored, I found many secrets on my own, and it was rewarding. Nothing today really recaptures the feeling I felt as a kid when I found a hundred rupees past an invisible walkway or a secret shop that sells a ring to boost my defense. Sure, I never beat it until I used the internet, but I had a lot of fun nonetheless. All that said, just let people enjoy their old games and realize that you're complaining about a game released in 1987 that anyone with a Nintendo console can buy for a measly 5 dollars.
@Kapenguin448
@Kapenguin448 10 лет назад
Half-Moon Prophet You hit the nail on the head. Times change, and gamer's tastes and expectations just aren't the same as what they were back in the NES days. It's not that it's badly designed overall, the game's idea of exploration just hasn't aged as well as others. But under no circumstances should anyone playing the game today for the first time attempt it without a guide.
@chimanruler15
@chimanruler15 10 лет назад
So, what you're saying is that this game lacks direction. I think that's an understandable complaint. I don't mind non-linear gameplay, but exploration shouldn't result in so much confusion. However, as HMP said, this is the first Zelda game, so it's going to have a few flaws.

It's highly addictive. However, I do have to agree with Johnny that the original LoZ is: 1) not for the casual gamer, 2) really difficult, 3) graphically and mechanically outdated, and 4) unplayable without a map or guide. As for 2nd quest...let's just say those curse bubbles are enough to make me chuck my controller out the window. :P Random question for you Zelda 1 fans. My mom actually used to play nes games and this was one of them. I just sit there and watch and learned where all the secrets are, even on the second quest. I still love this game to death even though I can understand why kids would not want to play this today

I honestly think this is one of the best aging games on the NES!

Xcalibur64 compared to about 600 other nes games, it aged well.

I don't see how, other than compared to games today this game is unfair and hard, but thats how we liked our NES games. Where didn't it age well? Sure the graphics suck, but its an NES game. Music is iconic, and all of it has been used in future games. Gameplay is amazing for the time.

Clunky combat thats just old school top down Zelda. Same way in A Link to the past Links awakening Oracle games, Sure it got better but still the same feel. Link is hard to control in all those games, but the fact that this was the first one you have to give it some credit. Im not wearing nostalgia glasses im giving a great game credit where its due. Same thing with Super Mario Bros. Any NES game that spawned a franchise really will have the same complaints, the only difference is Mario and Zelda went on to make better games in the future, which created these complaints.
@danh9676
@danh9676 7 лет назад
You cant discredit the game because of the NES limitations. All NES games suffer from the same issues, a clear sign its not the game, Zelda and Mario minimized the issues as much as possible. The only reason link handles better in a link to the past is because the hardware was better, i don't know if you have played Links awakening but he is just as if not harder to control than the original game.
@danh9676
@danh9676 7 лет назад
Play it on the gameboy, its not the same, hardware limitations. Plus zelda 1 is harder on modern tvs, try it on an old school tv. Input lag will kill the experience. Finally i mentioned hardware because that limited how well the games could perform. All of the games on the NES suffered from the same issues. I literally mean all of them.

You don't need a guide to have fun, you just need to explore.
@price2camper
@price2camper 10 лет назад
Thats what he said,but since the game doesn't have a good map or hint system without a map or the manual which is outside help instead of in game help. And there's a lot of secret can't know like burning a specific tree or blow a specific area.
@price2camper
@price2camper 10 лет назад
angel Ybarra you're pretty much gonna get lost with the manual or a guide which again is outside assistance.
@baigandinel7956
@baigandinel7956 9 лет назад
Angel Ybarra I think the hints are just fine. Usually when you have to bomb a wall in a dungeon, you can tell by looking at your map and compass that it's necessary to advance.
@jaredargento1511

Having to bomb every wall and burn every bush just to find the select few that hold secrets, some of which are MANDATORY for progression, is not my idea of fun exploration.
@jaredargento1511
@jaredargento1511 4 месяца назад
Listen, if the game will only let me carry 16 bombs at the very most, I’d really rather not be wasting them on random, identical-looking walls, HOPING that something will be revealed behind them. That’s not fun. It’s really tedious and boring.

the first time I played this game my freind showed it to me in the 80s. I tryed and it was like finding a light switch in the dark. I was overwealmed with the overword. Now I know better. thank you Nintendo Power.

Is it wrong for me to think that Zelda 1 & 2 should get a remake? Hell if Link's Awaking can, why not these first 2?

They absolutely should! Seriously, I cannot fathom why Nintendo remade the first two Metroid games, but NOT the first two Zelda games!

"Dodongo dislikes smoke" is saying that the smoke from the explosion is actually what's bad for Dodongo, you can just kill the thing with one hit from the sword after getting them with the smoke.

Apart from needing to go out of your way to get the silver arrows for Ganon, or the meat for the dude blocking the paths in the dungeons. I'm sure the challenge in navigation was fair for its time, but we're used to far better now.
@Ambibop

dementedavenger2784 I can understand loving a game, every gamer has one game that they love. But just because you love a game doesn't mean you can't see it's obvious flaws. One of the main reasons that modern games seem easier is because classic games were based off of arcades, which were made to take your money. And so many things in Zelda 1 are not as great as you remember.
