As somebody who only plays the Switch in handheld mode nowadays, if it is still all motion based then I might just skip out on it because I just KNOW that is going to be a nightmare to play!
@@RondoOfBloodX well in that case it is a good thing I just replaced my Joy-Cons(I dropped my Switch a few weeks ago and it fucked up the right stick. Left one was fine though), because it looks like the analog sticks are gonna be getting a lot of work and drifting is the last thing I need in a game like this!
"Twist That Boss Key!" "Guide This Beetle!" "Sketch That Bacon!" "Twist That Dial!" "Make The Eyeballs Dizzy!" "Strike The Specific Gemstone!" "Rip Off That Arm! Again! Again! Again!" "Slice Horizontally!" "Slice Vertically!" "And Thrust! THRUST!! *THRUST*!!!"
I feel like THIS game is where they should've put in voice acting with how cinematic the cutscenes are and how expressive the main cast is, there really isn't an excuse to keep the "interpret your own voice" concept here
You know, Im gonna be shook when Johnny calls it quits, this is one of the coolest and most hard-working people I know of, He's the only biased game reviewer I look at and you can feel the emotion and effort from his videos. I appreciate quality content such as this and I hope Johnny has another Sonic 06' type review left in him. keep pushin mann, you deserve so much more than what you work for. Fan of yours since 10'
The thing that annoys me about Fi is the whole percentages thing. In the end, their meaningless. There is never a time where she states "there is a 75% chance of x happening", but then doesn't happen. She is always right. If she was wrong every so often, that could create some tension, and some atmosphere for the unknown, but because this doesn't happen, it comes off as an annoying personality gimmick.
The interesting part is that..there IS a point, but it's optional so in the end it's detrimental(would you ask her about your equipment, she does give you an honest to god analysis of how well equipped you're for the area, and how the shields and items you're carrying could be improved).
Seems to be a barebones, overpriced remaster. Skyward Sword's issues are pretty much at its core, with the fact that you have to go through each region three times. And i doubt they are gonna rework the entire game to fix that.
Dear Johnny.....THANK YOU FOR POINTING OUT THAT THE WIIMOTE USES GYROSCOPE AND NOT IR SENSORS! Seriously, like almost all of the people complaining about the controls keep saying that the sensor bar isnt register their swings and the like
He still got it wrong by implying you need the sensor bar for this game at all. You really don't, other than for the Wii's menu to launch the game. This game does everything with the Wii Motion Plus, which is why even something as simple as entering your name is more sluggish, less responsive than it is in the Wii version of Twilight princess.
@@xninja83x67 If you're crafty about it, you can use a classic controller to launch the game with a broken sensor bar, then swap to the nunchuck for the game itself
@@Turtlewax63 if you are using a Wii u, I know someone who did it without a separate sensor bar--AND streamed it live, to boot, at around 6:30 at night, which was when the super Mario Galaxy segment was supposed to start. watch the full video...he does it eventually. and then the remote died a few minutes later, just after the break. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-J-IT5Jf9wqI.html
Really grateful for this incredibly fair review of Skyward Sword. Definitely a decisive game, but even with some of the drawbacks, it did a lot of things very well.
I loved this game when it came out. I enjoyed this version of Link, Zelda, and the villain was entertaining. I liked the gameplay and bosses, the bosses and dungeons in particular are fantastic IMO, and I enjoy flying around with your birb. It was hand-holdy, which annoyed me a lot, but I enjoyed the shit out of it.
Your points are tasteful and your reasons are acceptable. The main issue I have with Skyward Sword is the backtracking. Yes, other Zelda games have it, but here, its very glaring. How many times do you go to Faron Woods, Eldin Volcano, and Lanayru Desert just to do simple plot progression? 3 times...each. I honestly don't mind Fi or Navi. People give them shit, but they do what they do best - be a partner to help the Legendary Hero. Its not my favorite Zelda game nor my top 5 favorite Zelda games. But I get enough enjoyment from it to at least give it more than one playthrough. Plus, I like the fight with Demise; felt like a real sword fight compared to...Ganondorf from Twilight Princess.
"Oh my God, this game is still going..." YES! That is exactly how I felt when I played Skyward Sword for the first time. It has its moments where it shows it's charm and glory, but the stuff in between those moments is just...dull. Think of a sandwich with ham, cheese, peppers, and every other ingredient that makes it great. Now concentrate those toppings in very specific spots in the sandwich, and fill the rest with stale bread. That's Skyward Sword.
@@felixmartinez1100 Maybe it's the smallness that makes it seem short. it lacks that typical buildup a zelda game has where the world gets bigger and bigger...
@@KairuHakubi Yeah, and isn't that kind of the point of an adventure game? Even in Breath of the Wild, which broke most other Zelda traditions, kept this as a main part of its structure. Skyward Sword instead has you visit the same locations later for often arbitrary reasons, and so it doesn't feel like progression towards a larger goal but rather busywork keeping you from said goal.
Skyward Sword is being re-released onto the Nintendo Switch with JoyCon motion controls, and new Pro Controller layout with the sword being tied to the Right stick.
Of course it was Miyamoto who insisted on using motion controls. He always wants to innovate for the sake of innovation, generally through hardware gimmicks. Look what that did to Star Fox Zero. That said, I really the motion controls in SS.
The more I learn about Miyamoto, the more I think of him as a has-been. He was good in the 80s and 90s, maybe the early 00s, but these days he only seems to exist to fuck up good games with stupid ideas, or to prevent good games from being made because he can't think of any stupid ideas to fuck them up with. The sooner he retires, the better.
Miyamoto is a king of innnovation, and you don't get there without screwing it up sometimes. I just wish he didn't pull other people down when he does so. For every Mario Galaxy, he also makes a Skyward Sword by influencing others' projects.
Sterling Muse am I the only one who never really had any problems with the motion controls? I can't really think of any times where I encountered issues with them. They were generally responsive and accurate enough to not cause any problems. By no means is skyward sword a perfect game (friggin tadtones) but I think focusing so much on motion controls is missing the forest for the trees as it were
garrison lee I haven't gotten to try Skyward Sword yet, but since I actually enjoy Sonic and the Black Knight, I'm probably with you there. However, it is still worth mentioning, for a simple reason: In general, gamers tend to dislike motion controls. This is a HUGE generalization, and by no means applies to everyone - but due to that, games with motion control tend to do less well than those without, from both a pure profit view and from a popularity view. There are many people who agree with you though, I see them on most videos about this game - but there just happen to be a bunch of loud people who dislike it, and don't know how to evaluate the other parts of the game while ignoring their one issue.
Sargent Nx I loved it! Especially Link and Zeldas relationship in the game. Don't know how everyone was having motion control problems to the degree they were.
@@ParadeTheGospel I liked the motion controls generally, though they weren't always as precise as I'd like. I play Zelda to explore dungeons and other new areas to a lesser extent. Spending several hours between dungeons doing crap in areas that I've already been to was what dragged the game down for me.
YES! Finally a fair review of Skyward Sword Man, you wouldn't believe the amount of youtube personalities that act like children when talking about this game. Like, people just think way too highly about their opinion and they forget that there is a lot to love about this game. I'm glad someone actually gave good criticism! The main problem is the length of the game, not really the controls.
I know. Some RU-vidrs (coughEgoraptorandRabbidLuigicough) Completely ignore what there is to love about the game and treat it as if it were a cancer on the franchise. I don't think Skyward Sword is the best, but I still loved playing through it.
Yeah, the game is divisive by nature because of the controls and level design. Honestly, only complaining about the controls isn't really constructive. Egoraptor just has a bad habit of not knowing what he is talking about and how his jokes affect his fans. Man, he needs to have some balls and read the damn comments. He isn't evolving as much as a comedian (or critic) because of that! You know, being neutral towards a game is essential when analyzing it. Acting as a child isn't funny or constructive.
Exactly, he should have as much balls as Danny, since he actually bothers with the comment sections. Even though there's some toxic ones out there, but he should just suck it up and go through them. Because there's some that's trying to give him a good constructive criticism about his routine and comedy, and how to improve upon them. If he doesn't learn and see other's views, he's not going to improve. But it sometimes doesn't help when his white knighters can't accept constructive criticism on their favorite youtuber, and just go blatantly call out anyone as haters or fanboys of other series or something.
I personally loved the motion controls, I had my doubts but they were eliminated as soon as I got a sword in the game. I never had a single issue with them though, maybe that's why I liked them so much, because they always worked seamlessly and I hear that a lot of people had problems with the reception.
I knew the "AGAIN." joke would come up as soon as that segment started. It was hilarious and the delivery was perfect. Keep up the fantastic work John.
With Skyward Sword HD, I really hope Johnny does a round 2 video. The button controls bring a more comfortable experience and is easier to pick up and play. While only little new features were added and the areas remain the same, I believe the Switch version is the definitive version of Skyward Sword.
I love Skyward Sword, warts and all. The controls take... time. To adjust to. But I don't mind them really. I love SS's art style, world, gameplay... I think it deserves more love.
More love?? I'm constantly blown away by how many people call this their favorite Zelda title ever, or how many people love the game enough to overlook its weaknesses. As someone who thinks it's merely a fine game, I think you're off the mark. It gets the right amount of love. It definitely deserves less hate, though.
ArrisDome I never said it's my favorite Zelda, or that I overlook its weaknesses (hence "warts and all"). It's honestly pretty difficult to overlook its weaknesses considering how glaring they tend to be. But I love what it does RIGHT enough that it's still top five for me. I say it deserves more love because I think a lot of people just didn't even try it when they heard the negative reaction to it. And I think more people should approach it with an open mind. The points Johnny makes in this review are all totally valid, though, don't get me wrong.
Noah Horan I feel exactly the same about Sonic and the Black Knight... But that's definitely a worse game than Skyward Sword looks like tbh; I just enjoy it because I figured out how to play it well when I was younger
I genuinely loved the way Super Paper Mario milked the wiimote. You did EVERYTHING special the new device could do in that game - targeting the screen, shaking, tilting, all that jazz...but only really to solve puzzles and generally with an idea of how each element should be used conveyed pretty clearly in advance.
I never realized a lot of things in skyward sword were almost seed planters for things in botw. The stamina bar is obvious but another one is shields braking.
@Anime Master I know, but I think I was thrown off because this episode specifically was uploaded during a time in the day when I would have been at school if I had it while all of the others around that time were almost midnight in my time zone. So it didn't feel like a time zone difference. Assuming I remember correctly, which is certainly not guaranteed
You probably will never see this Johnny, but I can't get enough of your videos, especially your reviews, and I hope you keep doing what you do best. So being as sincere as possible, I ask you to do a review on the xenoblade chronicles games since the next one is coming out for the switch.
Funny story about this game. My sister named her character MyButt and we nearly died laughing when Zelda asked Groose, “YOU WERE PICKING ON MYBUTT AGAIN WEREN’T YOU!!”
Was not expecting the return of the Metroid Prime 3 bit. "And thrust! Thrust! Thrust!" XD Anyways, beautiful game with a few cool things here and there. Also, no hate towards SS but even after seeing this review and currently watching Chuggaa play it, I still wouldn't play it. It's one of those games I'd rather watch than play. TP also didn't drag as much as SS did IMO. And BOTW is a different beast only because of all the freedom it gives me. Love that! So, I can't wait for that review. ^^
I wonder how many would love this game more if they made a remake and fix some of its problems like putting in more side quests, allow you to use a normal controller or motion controller on the Switch, or for the fun of it add some hidden dungeons that are not part of the quest but as a side quest, add more places in the sky islands, and maybe fix up a couple of the boss fights. I think if Nintendo would remake this game in HD and use the ideas I had the game might become a hit like Wind Waker HD was. I would still rate the game as is a 8 out of 10 because I have seen far worst games that got a 7 out of 10, even though the game has a lot of flaw it is still a good game, and it is also a lot of peoples most favorite Zelda game. I see why some people hate and some people love it, but as my personal opinion I think got a lot more hate than it deserved.
1:37 "you can still have a fun time, even if you don't entirely agree with the control scheme." ....Let's see, do I make a Sonic and the Black Knight reference, or a StarFox Zero reference?😏
I actually did enjoy Star Fox Zero with its controls. They'd have to re-design the all-range stages and bosses if they reverted back to traditional controls, so it was definitely made with the GamePad in mind. And it worked, for the most part. Only a couple bosses proved to be really problematic.
Take ALL the time you need for breath of the wild, man. Rather see you take your time and enjoy yourself rather than rush it and burn out for our sakes, and I'm sure other people agree.
He did briefly describe Fi as a tour guide, but yeah, I'm with you 100%. I hate Skyward Sword. And when I say that, people immediately try to start defending my controls, but the controls aren't my problem. Fi is my problem. I want to play a videogame, not have Fi take me on a guided tour. She thinks the player is so stupid that she even repeats something another character just told you as well. Impa tells you to go see the old woman in the temple, then Fi pops out and tells you that there's a 95% chance you should go see the old woman in the temple. *HEY NO FUCKIN' SHIT!* Impa just told me that, go the fuck away! The only good part of this game is when you drop your stuff during one of the Eldin Volcano revisits and Fi can't pester you because you lost the sword. You actually get to think for yourself, almost like a goddamn videogame! I don't even have the words to describe how sad I was when I finished that sequence, recovered my sword, and the game proudly boasted that I could talk to Fi again. I don't want to talk to Fi again. This is not a reward. This is not a reason to celebrate.
+mjc0961 that is the same problem i had with LEGO LOTR. i get it, LEGO games can be played by kids so they should not be too difficult, but LOTR can be beaten just by bothering to play the game. while combat in the LEGO games were always forgiving, the game basically tells you how to do the puzzles. need to switch characters? character portrait lights up. need to throw gimli to that breakable wall? gimli jumps up and down to get your attention (not to mention breakable spots are extremely obvious). also every time you need to use an item or exploit a character exclusive skill, the hint system reminds you. basically it leaves no room for thinking unless you like gathering collectibles. fun game to play, but it tends to go on autopilot at times (basically happens on on-rail sections as, unlike LEGO star wars, you do not reset to the last checkpoint after death, so you can just wait it out if you want to)
I guess I'm lucky then. I'm left handed too but the game does a good job on helping you adapt to the controls so I loved playing it. Maybe it's because I'm used to play Wii games with right handed controls idk. I agree that they could've had an option for lefties tho
I played the game left-handed anyway. I don't think it created any additional issues to those already present with the general motion controls. It is annoying not to have the option, though. Especially since Link was left-handed in the first place.
I can understand how it's structured that you would get tired out. When I go through the re-visits, sometimes I get this treadmill feeling. That I'm making progress but I'm going nowhere since I've seen these areas already.
Skyward Sword is one of the funniest game experiences I've had, I remember cursing the game until the end and when the credits rolled I just laughed and remember being unable to hate it, and well I've replayed it 5 times so I definitely sort of like it, idk what's up with it but it just hits the right chords enough times that I can't just dismiss it. But when I played it the first time I was in fanboy mode since it was at release and absolutely loved it, now I can say that Demise is a terrible boss (except actual Ganon demise he's cool) and the song fetch quest is literally filler but all in all I still really enjoy it as a game, and hopefully will replay it soon.
Motion controls weren't a problem, fun parts at times, good story, but the length and some of the tedious parts of the game made this a one and done game for me. An HD version of this game wouldn't even get me hyped.
I love this as a backstory to the LOZ series. Honestly this makes it my absolute favorite, and has a bunch of my favorite mechanics like crafting upgrades, the first hints of cooking (which becomes better in BOTW), the beetle is the best item ever, and I liked the motion control combat after I realized it was meant to be slow and precise not rapid like everyone was trying to make it.
Skyward Sword's length didn't bother me all that much. Sure, you revisit a lot of the same areas, but a. the new parts of the area that open up really made it feel relatively fresh and b. that's kinda to be expected in terms of an adventure game. If the revisits were nothing more than the same things rehashed, I would get worn out and I will agree that a few parts of the game were unneeded, like that terrible escort mission with Scrapper, but those were very few and far between. I loved the world, the dungeons, the characters, and how Link handled. Heck, at one point in time, Skyward Sword was my favorite Zelda game of all time. And then Breath of the Wild became a thing.
I didn't mind visiting them twice, mainly because both times felt very justified (find zelda, upgrade the Master sword). The 3rd time though really felt like a stretch, like they needed something to make the game last longer, hence the song quests. If all that stuff happened in a 4th though (possibly Lake Hylia, since it was planned to be featured in the game at some point), it would be WAY less aggravating.
Loved the video, you made a lot of good points about the ups and downs about Skyward Sword. I remember enjoying it the last time I played (I'm like Johnny where I bought it, but didn't play it til much later on), but maybe I should pay it another visit. I'm gonna play through WW, then TP, then get back to SS. but I hope Johnny will enjoy BOTW cause that was a very well made game.
The game isn't necessarily bad but it is far from being the best Zelda to date, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, Wind Waker and Breath of the Wild were all much more creative and memorable experiences
The Spaghettinator Ocarina of Time was revolutionary at the time that's why I put it first. People today don't understand how impressive and innovative the game was when it first released
Wind Waker's creativity only comes with it's bland artstyle and the sailing though. Gameplaywise it made everything worse, which is why Skyward Sword is MUCH better than it. Same goes for TP, which is pretty much just OoT with a wolf.
Windwaker's art style is anything but bland. Love it or hate it Windwaker has a very unique art style especially for a game released back then. Games had been cartoony looking before, but they had never looked like an actual living breathing toon shaded world. The Ocean's the best overworld in the series imho. Twilight Princess is far more than just Ocarina of Time with a wolf. Some people don't acknowledge this but it has plenty of originality that make it just as different from Ocarina as any other game in the series. It's like EarthBound to Mother 1. The game is similar but does things in a different and expanded upon way so it's not accurate to claim it as a rehash.
Skyward Sword had the timeshift stones, sand sea, and pirate ship dungeon though so it shoots through the roof with creativity whenever it has those at least.
Never realized until you pointed it out that Skyward Sword was as old as Sonic Generations. Such a weird feeling because I was all over the Generations hype and knew it as 'the new thing', but I was almost completely unaware of Skyward Sword until like 2014, at which point it was already an established part of the franchise.
