Went through this starter 3x working on a 87 9.9. Found it easier to reinstall by taking the handle off as the rope kept getting in the way. Good tip lining up the flywheel notch and marking the starter. Also, interesting that people think adjusting the throttle cam screw will help with low idle. It only works for high speed wide open throttle adjustment of the butterfly.
FIRST ROUND KNOCKOUT ! I had one old motor and the threads were stripped for the starter bolt, so i tried tapping it out and use a heli coil , it worked, except I was about 2 hairs off center with a slight tilt, hahaha, screwed up the whole thing. I remember cringing as I adjusted that dang cam screw, but I got lucky!
I had the same Problem - with the 'starter bolt ' the threads in the aluminium BLOCK were rung I was going to go down the 'Heli-Coil' route - BUT , I discovered that the 'Bolt' if the bottom part had longer threads, that there was sufficient threads withing the Block to accept the Longer Threads .. 0318936 - Screw, Starter to Manifold So - I made a BOLT with a longer threaded bottom section .. It worked a threat ..
I got a run away throttle, she just goes till you think it might blow up, some people say stuck carb, float or throttle and I ain’t got a clue, might just start taking it apart and see what I find
I a new subscriber learned on a lot thank you I have one question I have a 15 horse Evinrude with problems with no spark for cylinder compression 55 in each cylinder needless to say it was a motor given to me so no loss either way what do you think the motor will run with that kind of compression thank you John

Hi mate thanks for this vid helps heaps what I do want to know is I have a 1984 15hp electric start tiller and it's almost as if the lobe doesn't come all way around enough to open the butterfly up full throttle compleatly where should I be looking at to fix that as there is a good amount of top end throttle not being used is this normal
Ok first take off the air box plastic silencer, Then rotate your tiller & look inside the carb @ the butterfly is it open to the horizontal position? That is where to start. kb
Hi . Like the video. The same thing happened to my 15 horse Johnson 1989. Can you please tell me what that plastic cam piece that broke name of the part, also the red arm that stops you from starting in gear mine broke off , and one more lol, the little roller that runs over the plastic cam piece on the roller there is a plastic piece that goes around that part that rolles over the cam. Mine was old and just fell apart its plastic also . Please tell me the name of these three parts and where i might find the parts to buy . Thank you so much a beginner at this stuff lol

Good video yanks for that. Did you do a video on the correct adjustment of the CAM roller screw? And also what tool is used to adjust the CAM roller screw - I have tried metric hex imperial hex and torx and none of them fit- is it a special Johnson tool ?

+AB, up under the mag plate is a nylon friction ring, over time the greas gets old and hard, & salty if used in saltwater, pull the flywheel remove the mag plate, and friction ring, clean re grease with moly grease & reassemble. kodi
Real nice camera shots of the back of your hand and nice shots of you're elbow too when U were hook n up the carb. butter fly. I know that camera placement is the key to a good a video even for professional the dreaded word "Cut!! " followed by dreaded words. "Take 23". However your video is important for the fact that you trouble shoot the problem.
+Dave Middleditch, No not likely to cause those issues, just look at the piece of plastic in question in the video & then inspect yours to see if it is broke. kodi

my little orange save you from yourself so you cant start it in gear is not being held where its supposed to be, the spring looks loose, not sure whats going on,, no matter if in neutral or not when I pull the pull cord, the orange piece locks the starter pawl..
Hello Kodibass, after the winterperiod I wanted to start up my 15 hp evinrude 1983. unfortunately no start. I checked and it had no spark. I disconnected the stopping button but still no spark. Do you have any idea. Can it be the electronic box.?
+AVH , when the mag cam plate is @ its full open sometime the butterfly in the carb will go past full horizontal level, this screw will allow you to back of so the butterfly is @ level inside the carb throat kodi
I have a 91 johnson 9.9. It looks like someone has ground down the cam plate on the low idle side. Could this be to increase travel to try to get more top end power? I'm gonna replace it. It was overstroking so far it stripped out the cam roller screw hole. I locktighted back in and loosened the cam plate screw but now I think my timing adjustment is off im lagging at full throttle and don't have any power? Any advice?

+Mike Hunt, It would have made it a bit easier , But not to much cause of the Mag plate, & wanted to show its a pickle but quite doable , also did not want folks to think you need the flywheel removed just to work on the starter. kodi
My 9.9 Johnson while not stay at a 3mph troll. It settles down to 2mph. Constantly having to feather the throttle up to 3mph. And yes goes back to 2. Grrrrr! What must i adjust to achieve the constant 3 mph?

+Rick Gurule, Many options available, If it were mine I would add the optional Throttle resistance clamp, It does what it sounds like,,, it is a simple plastic ring that clamps around the tiller throttle handle & by adjusting the wing-nut you can set the throttle where ever you like and tighten to hold that speed, cheep , effective , & simple to install, If you would like the part # I can get that for you. kodi
@@kodibassInsideoutboards yes please on the part number. I would like if possible for you to explain this low throttle works. It is attched to a plastic or teflon part. That apparently does nothing. Your camera isn't the issue. Your tripod is one, your reaching in front of it is two. Your pointing to things that aren't in frame is three. Hate to be disrespectful, but you're supposed to be teaching, yet have little knowledge of the creation of the videos process.
