Hey Brandon, good video. While I realize this is a repair and not a restoration, a little bit of heat from a heat gun on the lever lock handle and the switch lever should remove the oxidized appearance of the plastic and make the repair much more cosmetically appealing. If you have never tried the heat gun trick, it is a simple way to restore the color of sun faded plastics, likely a useful tip in you neck of the woods.
I thought you were going to show us how to fix the trim switch... After skimming though the comments it seems like the "up" side of the trim switch is a common failure. I don't think it actually fails. I think it just wears out. I use mine a lot but I don't use the up side any more than I use the down side. A bit of solder in the right place should do the trick.
Good Morning Brandon. On the back of my 71" 17' Mako is a 76" 75hp Stinger. I never wanted to repower so I have had to acclimate myself to all the nuances of these triples. The Stingers are not worked on in youtube land but they are shown on the back of a lot of water carriers. I was thinking about starting a channel primarily to help folks with diagnosing and re engineering this Johnson. Also at the same time I would like to show my cooking prowess and how to drink responsibly by not leaving the homestead while impaired. Do you think that would work? Just drop a big Thumbs up if you do, Thanks and my name is Brandon also.
I have this issue where the trim up does not work. I feel as though I missed something in the video. Why did removing the switch make it work? I guess a better question would be why does the trim up not work to begin with?
Inside the switch is a copper rocker arm that makes contact with an electrode when the tab is pressed up or down. You can carefully take the switch apart by bending out the little tabs on the switch. On each end of the copper rocker arm is a contact point that contacts the switch electrodes when the trim tab is activated. If the contact points have fallen off or wore down to the point they no longer make contact, you can solder new contact points on the ends. I had to do this with mine. Just be vigilant how the rocker arm fits inside the switch.
@@57strub I just repaired mine an hour ago. In my case a small plastic pin that goes in the rocker inside the switch had come out. I put it back in and now works
@@johnbeckham1672 I guess there should be a way to do that. You would have to take the wires from the handle and wire in a toggle switch to them. Good luck.
YOU SHOULD OF ADDED A ADDITIONAL SCREW AT THE TOP OF THE HANDLE THAT IS ONE OF THE REASON WHY THE BEZEL CRACKS ALONG WITH PEOPLE USING THE BEZEL AS A THROTTLE HANDLE. ALSO YOU SHOULD THINK OF THE FUTURE BY USING A GOOD MARINE GREASE ON THE SHIFT INTERLOCKING SCREWS AND ON THE SPLINES OF THE HANDLE WHERE IT GOES THRU THE CONTROL BOX
I really like that strategically place electricians tape ! Lol. If it didn’t work before you took it apart what makes it work now ? You didn’t replace anything ! Except for the cover ! So I’m guessing it’s the servo that’s bad then . You sure get a lot of use out of that speed wrench ! Since I went to cordless mine is just collecting dust ! Lol
Good video, I'll ask you. I have the same trim on an evirude 90hp, etc. When I'm in the water and I compensate with the trill and I leave it after a while while sailing, it goes down on its own, which could be
So what What do you feel to mention is you have to under the to flat heads holding the red lever on Because if your handle is not taped there are 2 screws that are holding the top part of that switch from coming off
Thanks for the video, I've watched several. It looks much easier on your vids, My handle will not come out at all. Allen screw removed and longer screw used to tap it out, well I've used much more than a tap and it will not budge. Any suggestions?
Hello I have a sailfish 175 with a 50 hp Johnson outboard before I purchased i tried the outboard and tilt everything worked however now that 🎣 fishing season is coming my tilt does not work i hear the pump running but outboard motor does not tilt,it's stuck down position, any suggestions would be great thanks
Hey, i have broken slide neutral lock PartNo 0332428 that you showed at 5:54 and trim button cap is missing (button is fully working and there is no problem with it, i m just missing the up and down red cap with no part id in brp part list) do you know where i can order it in europe?
So my question is Brandon why didn't you feel that switch and all those connections up with a big Gob of dielectric grease? I don't understand how people put boat parts together and just don't Gob dielectric grease onto everything. That's what I do with my boats am I doing it wrong? Is there a problem with dielectric grease?
do you have a video to make an external start switch setup for running 2001 Johnson 90hp when outboard is on engine stand and in a barrel?? that is going to be my summer project and since boat is away in storage lot, I need a easy way to start and run. thanks. Duane.
Man this is what I been looking for !! Can you sent me the link or part number for that switch , mimes goes down but want go up and my switch ohms out fine thanks !!
I have a 40hp magnum. Same controller handle. But my trim switch is touchy little movement and the motor goes up on its own. Does that mean I need a new switch? And how do I get one?
any red plug ended controller will work. ...or a newer version with the use of an adapter. Figure the adapter is $100, and a newer controller alone is $200+ your usually better off just buying a nice older unit. No yellow or black plugged controllers though.
@@57strub The switch is held in place by a small screw and a metal tab. When the plastic lets go and no longer holds the switch in place it causes problems. Which is why he bought a new handle piece.
@@BrandonsGarage can you help me? I need the control handle for my 40 hp evinrude on my 1993 bass tracker. I broke the red release button that unlocks the handle for forward & reverse movement.
