Societies grow great when old men plant trees of which they know they will never sit in the shade. Our purpose on this Earth, whether you're religious or not, is to make things easier for the next group that comes along. Leave it nicer than you found it. Concentrating wealth, leaving people to starve and work their lives away is not leaving it nicer.

Well, help me understand how loss of production will be absorbed? The United States isn't Sweden. We have a population of 360 million including illegals Biden has allowed into the country. So an auto shop works 32 hours? And closes for 3 days? Doctors work 32 hours? There are shortages now, how is this going to work?
@3ch1dna07
@3ch1dna07 4 месяца назад
Poor people are already working multiple jobs. A 32 hour work week would give them more time for another job. Yes, happiness doesn't last forever. And gaps are easy to fill. A Monday through Thursday job with 8 hour days can also offer Friday through Sunday work with 10 hour days which students would be able to fill more easily because Monday through Thursday would be school work and the weekends would be money work. It feels like the overall argument is, "We don't want change because change is scary." Life moves on. Keep up or get out of our way!

As a programmer who is working with AIs I can say that this country needs to focus on giving a living wage to every American now. If the current trend continues where the rich seek to reduce their work force and labor costs as much as they can we will see a massive schism is the US economy, and political structure. The singularity is not a science fiction movie and it is not waiting on those who have the power and wealth to make a soft landing, it is speeding up. We need to have a societal structure that will create a soft landing for our economy and our people as the fourth industrial revolution reaches full speed with AI and robotics. Computers increase at a rate of 2x per 2 years. Every 20 years computers are 1024 times as powerful. AI increases it's training at a rate of 10x per 2 years. In 20 years AI will be 10,000,000,000 times as powerful in it's training models and we will be using it to increase the role out rate of our robotics revolution. The singularity won't take long to reach it's zenith. Let's at least take this time to create a soft landing and then see where we need to go.

I work three twelve hour shifts as a registered nurse and would welcome a 32 hour work week. Mr king seems to be unaware that burnout is very high amongst nurses and health care workers overall. So simply attracting more nurses is not the answer because we are not able to retain them. There are many reasons that nurses are leaving the profession and it’s not only because we work nights, weekends, and holidays, but because we are facing higher levels of nurse staffing issues and workplace violence.

It's biologically unnatural to have alarms jolting us from REM (sleep is necessary to repair the body) and living that way. I moved to a 3 day week and I'm actually satisfied now. I get to explore and be with nature. Being with nature is medicine on its own. I'll NEVER do the 5 day week again. I just wish everyone didn't have the same days off (Saturday and Sunday) because exploring with that many people is lame. I'm 100% for 4-day weeks only if companies stagger it. Like half the companies give Fridays off, the rest Mondays. Being around human energy is kinda toxic so... ❤❤❤

Bernie, you are so ahead of your time. People from your generation used to live to work, but newer generations work to live. Sadly, I think that the American mindset is too focused on squeezing as much as possible out of their work processes as they can. In the Netherlands, we already have an average work week of 32 hours, so it is also socially accepted, which might be a little bit different in other countries. In some cases, due to tax benefits, working 40 hours is sometimes more expensive or results in only slightly more net-worth, than working 32 hours. Which in my opinion is amazing. An anecdote from my own life: I'm a Dutch entrepreneur who has been working 32 hours per week for 5 years now and I can say that it has made my life so much better. I have less stress and more time for my family. I feel more productive too, as I work 4 days per week and can take a break midweek, making it feel like I have two small work weeks instead of one long one.

Corporate America has more money that it knows what to do with, AND moving to a 32-hour work week has proven to be beneficial enough for both businesses and employees that when tested, businesses have decided to stick to the model even after the program ended. Just because it's the way you've always done it doesn't mean it's the way it should always be done (nor the way it was always done, nor the best way to do it.) Morale in the United States would go up EXPONENTIALLY if we moved to a 32 hour, no loss in pay, I assume no loss in benefits work week.

Then the opposition gets up and says that this is going to lead to “no work” and that this wont make workers happier and blanketly stating that the pro 32’s studies are wrong without citing any studies that disproved them. Then the next guy got up and says “workers say that they care most about flexibility in when where and how they work” but then states that a shorter work week would result in workers having less controll over when they work. Im like bro this is a law to set a cap on how much workers have to work, giving that companies want workers to work more and workers want to work less a cap by definition would result in more controll to the worker. The exact opposite of what he claims

Senator Bernie you are amazing. Thank you so much for fighting for us. I would love to have 32 hours work week. I liked how it was pointed out that many of us can't go to church because we work so much. I am so exhausted after the stressful work week that I have no energy to go to the church. I also don't agree with the statement that we should allow the market to offer it if they want to? The greedy owners will never do that. The study group of companies that are willingly changing the work week is small. It's only the good hearted owners that are willing to do that. Majority of the big companies are greedy, so it won't happen. This needs to be Nationwide law. Also saying that the lost productivity will cause an increase of AI or use of machines makes no sense. It's already happening and it will happen with or without lowering the work week hours. The companies need to decrease the salary and bonuses of their upper management and actually share the profits with their employees. And this is one way to do that. The companies should not be allowed to increase the price of their products if the 32 hours per week is implemented. The prices should stay the same. The owners should share the wealth and not keep it all to themselves. That's what should happen.

What I understand is that as an employer, if your company can't support your employees who are the backbone of your workforce with LIVABLE PAY, then you shouldn't be a company at all. Why does a human right have to be a trial? Why does a human right need statistics? It's 'profits' and 'productivity' within these companies that are a cancer to the people. These companies who want to make millions, if not billions, with cheap labor, need to reevaluate themselves.

If we are not working for a better quality of life, then what are we working for? Not many of these politicians have worked a real day's labor in their lives, it's good that we have a Bernie.
