Thanks for this video. I need an inexpensive display case and I see those hutches in the trash all the time. I'm going to see how hard it is to hook a couple together to make a tall case
when you said out and about the first time i ahd to repeat it cause that it totally Canadian Katie 🤣 then to see that outtake at the end - hilarious 🤣🤣🤣
I have an art deco waterfall dresser on my to-do list when spring comes along. A neighbour who moved put it curbside so I moved it to our house in a wheelbarrow. Would you ever do a video giving your viewers some refinishing ideas for their finds? Could be interesting.
That MCM dresser was to....die.....for...... OMG! I was practically salivating. I hope you end up getting it and giving it some love. Your area's furniture options are as desolate as ours are....sadly.
Sure enjoyed the shopping with you! Me and my daughter live to Thrift everything! She recently furnished a house with quality pieces from all the local stores! Such fun! I just subscribed so I can go shop with you again soon!😂❤❤❤❤
I totally agree that the bar pulls should never be replaced with two knobs. Thanks for taking us along on your thrifting junket. I appreciate your opinion and expertise.
what a shame the mid-century modern buffet at around 15mins is not in your price range yet: I'd love to see you bring that one back to life!! (especially what you would do with the drawer "pulls'" - they are so unusual!). But otherwise I'm not surprised you only got two things: it was a bit of a depressing selection, wasn't it? I hope you'll have a bonanza of roadside recovery items very soon to replenish your stocks free of charge! kindest regards, k
That was a very eye opening exploration. Would the last resale shop ever consider letting you take the special pieces you like and flip them back to them to resell at a higher price? Seems like it might be a win/win situation.....? Also, sometime you can find nice inexpensive furniture in antique shops.
That’s SO FUNNY!! As soon as you said “out and about”I thought to myself (or perhaps said to my dogs) the two words that tell me someone is from Canada!! My grandmother was from Nova Scotia!
What you do is total genius. With reference to thwacking the new top for the Target pieces, perhaps you should add to your motto "Sometimes I paint and sometimes I don't" with "Sometimes I repair damage and sometimes I inflict it." 😁
I used to be able to get free and cheap furniture every time I went out but those days are gone. I barely can find anything to work on anymore. Not on marketplace or thrift stores. Things have changed so much lately.
The prints in the final store! My grandma did needle point for the same thing. I still have them, rolled & put away. I should showcase them in my house somehow. ❤️
This was fun to see my local stores. I agree that the selection is not great. I’m disappointed that the community has stopped the spring and fall big garbage pickup. My daughter furnished her whole first appartment that way!
I like this style of video. It helps me learn what to look for and how to tell of a piece is worth or not. Seems also that there is a shortage of furniture to flip. Here in CT USA, I haven’t found anything. I also have noticed a big growth in the flipping furniture community
Fun video Katie! I like how you shared your ideas and tips even for the pieces you did not purchase. Looking forward to the makeovers of the 2 pieces you bought.
The Art Deco piece that you've been "eyeing" is by The Honderich Furniture Co.(Canada).. After passing through many name changes and many owners.. They finally settled on that one in 1926.. Elizabeth Honderich became their Furniture Designer in 1941 fresh out of Art School... That particular piece is from their Dinning Room Collection..which won a Design Award from the Canadian Furniture Mart in 1967... Sadly though.. Honderich was bought out by Electrohome..which desperately wanted to transition into the "digital age".. nothing to do with the great cabinet and furniture company it once was... Electrohome's run came to slow end in the 90s and early 2000s.. Seeing such quality piece that has survived all these years.."restores" the memory of Canada's foremost cabinet and furniture history. What a great find!... I would pay the $150.00 as is... ✌️❤️😎👍
Very interesting/helpful of you to share your thought process as a pro furniture flipper. Most insightful. But HOLY COW....the prices in your area are STUPID expensive!! :(
I found this video very informative n helpful thank you for that. To those who do what you do, I’m sure they appreciate it. I’ve done many antique pieces of furniture. I guess that’s where my heart is at. But I do find what you do with each piece turn’s awesome. Whether you decide to refinish or paint, you do a beautiful job. Thanks for taking us along. ♥️😊👍👍👍
I've gotten old Vanity for free. It similar what you got I havent done anything to it yet had for 3 years. Can wait to see what you have plan for it. Need some idea's
That MCM Honderich sideboard would look awesome just stripped and treated with a good coat of Odies Oil. The natural colour of that wood will be beautiful!
Can I Ask You Something Do You Live In Minnesota? I Was At A Thriftstore & I Redone It It With Some Bullseye Shellac. After I Was Done With It I Felt So Proud Of My Self After I Go Through With It.
Oh Thank You for the tour around Moncton! My Dad was originally from there and it's been years since I was last there 💖 I also wanted to thank you for showing the do's and don't of thrift store furniture shopping the choices are mind boggling! I would have definitely bought the vanity as well! Good Job! Another GREAT video! Thanks Katie
I loved going scouting with you! I envy your possibilities. I live in "sorta" your neck o' the woods (Lubec, Maine/Campbello Island) and we have NO thrift stores. It would take a trip to Calais and there's nothing worth talking about there. However, I now live in a small, one-bedroom apartment, so there's no space to work on furniture. Grrr!
Grew up in Rochester and am used to oout and ahboot (Scottish accent), or Canada west coast lilt and eh... 😁👍...Lynchburg VA does the Scottish + southern y'all..that was a surprise. 😁
some really neat pieces at that last store. I have a Goodwill that I find great furniture at, hit and miss of course. This may sound bad, but you kinda get the feeling that maybe someone died and this is the stuff nobody wanted so they donated it. Some of the pieces just look like they came from the same house, ya know? I have been trying to figure out a way to get more surface space on my current craft desk and found an awesome art deco desk for 39.99! I passed on it my first visit but had regrets so went back the next day, measured and inspected it. Asked if they could do better on the price, got it for 29.99!. The best part was when my husband, daughter and son in law went to pick it up.......they noticed that 2 of the legs were bent up (but they knew it was an easy fix). Probably because they didn't want to move this heavy thing back to the show floor, they gave me a gift card for 10.00 at goodwill so all said and done I got this awesome big ole desk for 19.99. I love it as is, I just cleaned it up and it is perfect in my craft room.
Hello Katie. Do you use something to prevent copper from tarnishing? I'm new to restoring items and I'm learning a lot from your videos. Thanks you Anita
Not sure where you are, but as far as thrift store furniture goes these may be the worst I have ever seen and such high prices! I've thrifted all my life, not to refurbish or flip, but to furnish my apartments and house with. I have found that since COVID prices have really escalated, particularly at Habitat. The internet has also led to increased pricing as the stores do searches, so it's a lot harder to find a great deal. Also, I am noticing couples shopping in them which is unusual. Guess it's become an in thing. I liked it when everyone thought it was embarrassing to shop at thrift stores and I could go treasure hunting!
Great to trip the life fantastic around and about as you look for stuff and things. Was a learning experience. Thank you. Stay well. Spring is a comin'
This was a fantastic video to watch. Really enjoyed your commentary and the vibe you have. Guess I'll have to sub to hear more about your adventures :)
Am in the UK, the prices in charity shops for most stuff nowadays is so expensive. And so many are closing down. But I'm not surprised because of the prices of things. There is one or too that is reasonable , but I think they have just gone greedy. And ots silly because the stuff doesn't sell , then they send it to other shops.
First time watching you, Love watching you going into all the thrift stores and seeing all the different types of furniture. But some of the pricing is a little crazy,
thanks so much for this info video. I have dabbled in furniture painting but am thinking about moving to larger pieces. Great to know what to look for and what to leave alone! Love that you are kn Canada so all the big stores are around me as well eh?
Can you negotiate price at habitat for humanity? I used sea spray thicker on toos that had bubbles. I sanded down peaks to a smoothish feel but still keeping the texture and did two colors on top
Hi Katie, your hair looks gorgeous. Thanks for the tour. I love the art deco dresser, with the round mirror, will you video the makeover? Take care Gale x
I purchased a small dresser from an auction months ago and I just got around to looking at it. It has what I'm pretty certain is mouse poop in the drawers, not a lot but it's there. 😢 Is it a lost cause or is there a way to fully sanitize it? I hate to throw it out, but I'm also grossed out by it haha!
Hi Katie, the vanity at the front of the RE Store is not Art Deco (Arts & Crafts period). It looks more like made in the 1940's, possibly early 1950's. My oldest sister had one so similar - she's 83. Art Deco, although beefy looking, has a bit more ornamentation and made in the 1920's and 30's.
It is in fact an Art Deco waterfall style piece from the 1930’s. Waterfall is a style of furniture design from the 1930s and 1940s. It was the most prevalent variation on Art Deco furniture during this time, primarily created for the mass market and for bedroom suites.
This was really a masterclass on selecting used furniture for restoration or redesign. Thank you si much for taking us along, and explaining how you make your selections.
@@salvagedbykscott 😀Did you ever see Rick Mercer telling some American political students that Prime Minister Tim Horton had a achieved a Double Double by gaining the support of both sides of "Congress"? And they congratulated him - PM Horton that is.
Hi Katie. Was wondering if I can get advice from you. I just purchased a real hardwood Amish built kitchen table set and want to change the tabletop to a light gray as well as chair seats. It is currently a dark brown wood, like mahogany. Do you have a video that is similar fir doing that. Don't know where to start.i subscribed to your channel and your techniques are amazing. I can send you pics of my table and chairs ...let me know and thank you!
You’d need to completely strip the existing finish to bare wood and re-stain everything. I did that on the top of this dining table: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-U8TKOvB5CII.html
Thank you for your video. I am looking for having a greater and useful job, an activity in relation with ecology and recycling...🌱 Looking at your videos permit me to think it is possible🙂 We have exactly the same type of furniture and price here in Belgium🇧🇪. I follow you with great attention. I love what you do😍 and hope I could make the same...😊
Love it! Wow! Your prices really are a big step higher than here in Indiana. You have a lot of options to look near you! That’s great. Love your bloopers, too! Great video!
