Another lovely day on the hill. The calves are all over two weeks old and at this stage I like to give them their first clostridial vaccines and disbud any horned calves.
This is a very quick procedure, we use local anaesthetic and once that has taken effect, disbudding takes a few seconds. The anaesthesia lasts a few hours and the calves are fine.
A large animal vet, or a vet technician can easily disbud your animals for a small fee. Easy!
I have put the yearling heifers into the valley and the cows and tiny calves can clear the hilltop for me as they are so reliable at staying behind an electric tape. Keeps my camellias safe.
