Joining cables under the floor. (27)

After building a wall in-between two bedrooms it left sockets and switches in wrong positions. I joined them using the Ideal In-Sure maintenance free enclosure up in the loft.
I also recently reached five thousand subscribers on RU-vid! This is amazing guys and I really appreciate the support over the last six months. As long as I can get the content and I think the footage is worth uploading I'll keep firing this stuff out.
Whoever guesses the correct amount of times I say the word "so" gets a mention!
I can't stand it, it's a bloody millennial word that means "listen to me now as I think I know more than you".

@Liam-uo5zq
@Liam-uo5zq 4 года назад
I don't usually cap either, everything you now install in walls is RCD protected so you'd like to assume if someone went through the cable it would trip the RCD, not only that but I've been to jobs where the capping has done naff all and someone has hammered a nail through the capping and into the cable anyway. EDIT: The only benefit I can see is ease of rewiring the leg if it was damaged etc
@zjzozn
@zjzozn 4 года назад
Liam did you think it’s for protection against nails 🙈
@petergstivrins
@petergstivrins 4 года назад
Liam. caping and oval should be used to protect from the corrosive properties of fillers, bonding, hardwall etc, to the insulation of cables. These compounds can possibly deteriorate the cable insulation integrity. It is not for mechanical protection. Not having a dig but thought it might help.

@@millomweb Thank you for your response. You must have better eyesight than me, I did not see any light switches behind doors as they have not been rehung yet! However my wife is always telling me that I am blind! The man is doing his best and is helping others by posting the videos, why don't cut him some slack? If you mean placing conductors behind door frames then I agree. Referring to this, I think that he said something like - "this is what they used to do".. Whenever I come across this old cable routing method I use a red Sharpie and write in block capitals "Danger, Live Cables" . It put shivers up my spine. BS7671 clearly says that It is not an acceptable cable routing practice for today.
@millomweb
@millomweb 4 года назад
@@drunkinpiper It was an early thought - switch on the wrong side of the door but it wasn't until 15:00 that I noticed the catch that confirmed it. In my mind, I'd planned to use trunking/ducting for skirting boards and door frames and run all wire, pipes etc in those ! So that things can be easily changed without redecorating. I'd even though of having rooms with copper pipe picture rail and Tee into that with gas wall lamps - so if the mains went off, at least we'd have gas lighting ! BUT I'm now more thinking of making lighting circuits 12V DC running off a solar charged battery ! If you think about it, nowadays most electrical items are low voltage with a 'charger' 'brick' - why bother why not have low voltage in the house now and do the special thing for those items that still need mains voltage!

@@lightbulb6293 LOL Thanks for your proof of the complete lack of common sense that exists ! I note most doors are hung the way I suggest - there must be a reason for that and the fact that's the case is precisely where 'common sense' comes from - it's what most people do.

@@lightbulb6293 In England ! In my house, there's only one room with a door wrongly hung - and thinking about it, it's completely wrong ! Would be better opening the other way (out instead of in) but the reason it's wrong being better in this case is due to the room layout. It's on the same side of the room as the fireplace - (but not the same wall as the fireplace) which is quite rare. Oh, there is right way and wrong way - I've seen a few hung upside-down !

It is ALWAYS a risk to join cables, fault finding becomes difficult and once hidden hard to find. The way I was taught years ago was NEVER join a cable, unless its visible -all joints to be at switches/sockets and light points or accessories. Easy access later. Oh I 'm old school, where a job should be done correctly when nobody is watching. It should never be about speed but safety. Connectors melt. Irrespective of regs, its bad practice and should be about pride in ones work, its what we used to call a tosh ( a bad job)
@JBE
@JBE Год назад
Agree 100% and in the real world with joints and costs to be considered, there's the maintenance free connection. In the video I have used these to deal with the situation at hand, with the added bonus of helping the next spark by leaving labels on the joint box and at the DB.

Great video as always, always helping me learn. Why would you use the Insure boxes over the "traditional" terminal / junction boxes with the brass screw terminals? I guess I don't really trust push in connectors over screw downs.
@jamesvdv0
@jamesvdv0 4 года назад
Insure push in connectors are maintenance free because the sprung contacts will not come loose over time. Screw connections are not maintenance free because they can come loose and therefore need to be accessible for inspection and maintenence, so you should not use screw connectors under flooring which is practically inaccessible.
@krehbein
@krehbein 4 года назад
James van de Vyver ....That’s so interesting. In the US those push in connectors are frowned upon because people think they’ll work loose. Apparently folks over in the U.K. think the opposite. Also big no no here to bury a junction. But sometimes what are you going to do short of tearing up another level.
@JBE
@JBE 4 года назад
I would always prefrer a mechanical connection over a push in type or even a twisted together connection. It always feels weird putting a joint in a floor that might not be accessible.
@vikingofengland
@vikingofengland 4 года назад
@@jamesvdv0 How can they come loose if the junction box is secured and not moving around?
@jamesvdv0
@jamesvdv0 4 года назад
@@vikingofengland. Mains 230V AC connections, particularly those under load, can vibrate as each peak in the mains signal (2 * 50Hz = 100Hz) causes momentary heating of the contact which can loosen it over time. That's the theory anyway. The IET Regulations do state that only crimped or soldered/braised connections are allowed to be unserviceable. I assume that these sprung connections count as crimped connections, as far as the regulations are concerned. I'll post a reference to the IET regulation on here if I remember later.

Nothing to do with your vid but looking at the house it's absolutely crazy that people have to pay a ridiculous price for a heap of substandard property like this and then spend more on attempting to make it decent. Many, many properties in the UK are substandard and most terraced properties should be condemned.
@JBE
@JBE 4 года назад
Although I agree with you about the terraced properties in the rental sector being substandard, this property is in quite good order and receives any repairs or maintenance it requires. The landlord always spends where needed without question. The biggest problem we have is we have no way of dealing with the demand. The housing sector is always about 10 years behind the population growth and so it will never have enough. Like in many countries sadly, the more money you have the better home you can buy/rent.
