I'm 28. Wanted to be a Marine my whole life. I made bad choices when I was young and didn't do it. Instead of living life with regret, I finally woke up and put in the work. Went from 270lbs down to 190. Went to meps, now I'm shipping out in October to earn the title.

Marine Corps sad reality is away alot on deployments, just like the Navy. Uncle Sam is your best friend folks. The benefits are good. I was in the Navy, 9 week boot camp. The Marine Corps is a mental game. None that back on the back shit with the Marine Corps. 13 weeks boot camp. The Marine Corps is a prestigious unit. I watched them drill at MCRD. Marine Corps is extremely rewarding.
Spent 11 years in the Marine Corps. Enjoyed every minute of it. My advice to all those that may be thinking about joining. 1. Make sure your number one priority is you want to be a Marine. 2. Don’t get Married until you have settled into your career and not just wanting to get out of the barracks. 3. Be the best Marine you can be. You’ll find shit birds, stay away from them. 4. Yes, embrace the suck!!
I served 21 years in the Corps with 3 years in combat. I joined in 1967 and by December 1968 I was a Marine platoon commander in Vietnam. I was a company commander during the evacuation of Saigon in April 1975. And I spent two years in Latin America supporting counter insurgency operations. There was one year unaccompanied tour in Okinawa with a 6 month deployment for training in Japan and aboard amphibious ships. I also served a tour at the US Special Operations Command. The guy is right about the four things you need to consider before joining the Marine Corps. Although he says don't worry too much about physical fitness, I would tend to disagree. Boot camp is an intense mental game, but it makes it a lot easier if you are in good shape before you join. I would recommend looking up the current fitness requirements expected in boot camp and go there as fit as you can. Not only will the DI's apply intense mental pressure, but I assure you that if you are struggling to do the physical part, it only adds to the stress. And he's right that while in boot camp, you should expect to fail with everything you do. It's part of the mental game to show you that even when you think you failed something, you recover and push ahead. There will be times when some of you will have to dig down further than you thought possible into your mental and physical reserve to keep going. It's supposed to be that way because it is what you will need to do in combat. I would add this important consideration as well. There is a creed in the Marines that every Marine is a rifleman. It's not just a saying. It's a faith. It doesn't matter if you become a office clerk, vehicle crew, mechanic, supply clerk, etc., when the chips are down and Marines are needed on the front line, you can become a rifleman face to face with the enemy. Always remember, you are a rifleman first and whatever occupation you are assigned in the Marines is second. You need to be prepared for the mental and physical demands of combat. Trust me. No matter how hard boot camp might be, combat will challenge you far more and you need to be prepared to handle Marines in your unit becoming KIA or WIA. I lost a lot of Marines in my platoon that year in Vietnam. We were always under strength. You are in a firefight and lose Marines KIA and WIA, you put them on a medivac, give new orders to your subordinates, saddle up, and continue the mission. You never get used to it, but you have a mission to accomplish, and that is what being a Marine is about. The primary mission of a Marine is to be prepared to fight in combat. In Vietnam, there were Marines who supported the infantry from positions in the rear that were relatively safe, but there were times when those bases received incoming rockets and mortars or the enemy attempted to overrun. Patrols around the perimeter would be ambushed. During the Tet offensive, the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers initially over ran some of those installations. Caught off guard, (as was everyone in Vietnam at the time) Marines recovered quickly and those Marines who normally didn't face the enemy directly became riflemen to defend their positions. They prevailed. And the guy is 100% right about another thing. Once you become a Marine, you are a Marine for life. Boot camp transforms you from a kid to a man who is physically fit, confident, able to lead, and able to meet and overcome whatever challenges. Semper Fi to all Marines past, present, and future.

It's not always a great thing. It is true though. It changes you and there's no going back. I don't take excuses from anyone and that means me first, lead by example. It would be nice to take it easy on people in my life sometimes. My 2nd wife is tough as nails thank god lol.
@@MrMarkRoads Yea man! I definitely hold my self to a much higher standard and have a hard time working with people that don't. The Marine Corps teaches you to own up to your mistakes and this is a common flaw I see among people I work with... Its crazy the amount of people I see who have such a hard time owning up to their mistakes or just can't take constructive criticism. Semper Fi!
1. Marine Corps comes first, family second. 2. 4 Years to the Corps, they own you. Obey all rules. 3. Long days. Bootcamp is the first step and its not easy. Give 100% in all you do. 4. It will be a challenge. You will fail, but get back up and do it right.
I agree 100% with Tony. Almost every new recruit after a few days in boot camp will think that they just made the worst mistake of their life. Don't be fooled. Yes, the 13 weeks can be miserable. But once that's over, the rest of your time will be very manageable. When you are sent to a new location, most people will adjust in 3-7 days. You will have your routine down and you will find time to make good friends that could last a lifetime. Remember, the day you graduate will be the proudest day of your life. -USMC Veteran 1982-1986.
I will add remember why you chose to join. Yes it's hard, yes you will grow, and yes sometimes frustrating. The Corps isnt for everyone, its first a few who want to serve as US Marines.
The Marine Corps is an amazing gun club! But, like any organization it has its flaws. I loved the my time in the Corps and still miss it to this day! I try to tell these young folks that its what you make of it. If you go in an try to fight it, you'll lose and walk away defeated and frustrated. Embrace the Suck always and remember that it CAN always be worse! The Marine Corps teaches you so many things if you allow it too... Semper Fidelis!
That’s probably the most powerful thing I’ve heard. Be ready to fail. That’s what a true warrior lives, they live with fear and failure yet they keep going holding onto the small victories. And more important, that’s what war is, a lot of failure. If you’re not afraid to learn from failure, you fearless.
0311 Infantry Veteran here. Joined the Marines when I was 17 (early program) did 4 years active duty. The standard contract is 4 and 4. or 6 and 2. 4 and 4 is 4 years active and 4 years inactive ( you check in to the local base once a year to make sure your address is correct.) 6 & 2 is if you go in as reserves - 6 years active reserve 2 years inactive. If you have a certain special gift such as a trade and you want to pursuit that then that is great. If you want to be a grunt- you just need to pass the fregin ASVAB. I had a choice and I chose Infantry (yes what the fck was I thinking !) But I do not regret it. I would do it all over again if I could. Being a grunt means you are going to be trained specifically to kill and destroy. It's the back bone of the corps. Grunts also have a better path way to doing more specialized jobs such as F.A.S.T company, Sniper School, Recon... If you are scared and do not want to be challenged- DO NOT JOIN ! If you want to be a professional assassin under the rules and guidelines of the GENEVA convention.. The Marines is the place to go. Just remember this isn't a video game. You only have 1 life.... you only have 1 shot. Semper Fi ~

These were some great tips! I talked to my Marine Recruiters in January of this year since I wanted to carry on the Marine tradition throughout my family. I went to MEPS and I was medically cleared to join the military. However, at school, I was put on an IEP (which is seen as a disability throughout the military) in the 3rd grade and its been with me all the way until now (I graduated with the class 0f 2020). Due to my IEP, I needed to get a waiver to join the Marines. My IEP waiver was denied two times by the Marines and now I'm going for a third waiver chance in a few weeks. So my family wanted me to try other military branches. However, I really wanted to join the Marines because I wanted to do MARSOC since I wanna give myself a challenge and be apart of the best Marines as I like the elite brotherhood of the Special Forces Community. I wish luck though to everyone else who wants to join the Marines or any other military branch!

Hey there brother. Love what you are doing. Helping the future generations with the choices they are facing. I appreciate all the motivation and service the rest of you gentlemen in the comment section have displayed. I have also seen that you have other videos uploaded have not watched them. Though for any youngster out there still weighing their options. Look guys, do follow his advice, listen to what this person is saying the marine corps is no joke. Though there are outliers. I never wanted to be a lifer, family was always first and will always be and finally being a marine was never that interesting to me. My name is Angel Yos and I served in 1st BN 5th MAR at San Mateo, CA just off Capistrano road taking the 5 south as an 0311. I just did that so people know I am not speaking out of my “ass.” During my last months in the corps. I did the cliche of going to be a “cop.” I was complete with my LA sheriff’s deputy candidate process to be given my date for the academy. An immature, irresponsible choice changes all that and I was disqualified from LASD and NJP’d from the Corps. Which is a term used for literally a non-judicial punishment, which just means that your commander at company/battalion and etc. level will punish you instead of going to “military court.” There is more to it but google can take it from there. The point of it all is that, regardless of all of that I still got myself back up and currently transferring to UC Berkeley to pursuit a degree in Neurobiology. My endgame being a neurosurgeon with my MD/PhD in the neuroscience field. Now why all of these information. Yes, he is right though my heart was not in the corps and I still did my 4 years, received an honorable discharge, albeit my DUI mistake. I even decided to go back LASD as a reserve deputy but at the end of the day. My passion to be a doctor, to be a surgeon outweighed everything and decided to withdraw my candidacy. As mentioned before, I have nothing against those who pursue the Corps as a career or still have the love, motivation and discipline. Although for me, the Corps will always be a great part of my life but I just had other goals, other dreams, different aspirations. I still became a Marine and that is what I want to get across to many of you young kids out there. If you want to use the Corps as a stepping stone then don’t let anything stop you. Do I think I’m a badass? No. Do I think I’m special? No. Am I better than a civilian? No. Call me liberal but I have a simple mindset. Also, who knew that I will understand and love math and science. Modern day genius here!😂 jk. I’m just a guy who loves adventure. I put in all my strength, will, effort and determination in whatever situation I am in. That’s what helped me accomplish my time in the Corps. As far as how “excellent” as a Marine I was. Hey, you can ask or if you have a Marine that works in administration, my accolades and “service record” should still be available. I started this channel many years too late, because I "feared" it would be a failure and that nobody would watch my videos. As you know, it can be difficult due to individuals questioning your credentials. I went to college on a track scholarship, so needless to say the running was the least of my worries. But I am afraid of heights. Anyone who has been to Marine Corps boot camp knows that we spend a lot of time in the air. Obstacle course, confidence course. Be prepared to face your fears. I tend to over think things. Why do I have to this and that. Then it hit me that if I look at the training as something that can save my life in a combat zone I don’t have to question it anymore. Once I figured that out, boot camp became a whole lot easier. Every little thing we did I asked, how can this save me in combat? Life became much simpler. Just something to think about.

If you want to be a Marine you have to leave the little boy behind. You have to think like an adult and present yourself as one. You only have one "person" to impress and that is GOD. Follow only lawful orders and stay out of the bars. Wait until you have your surroundings figured out. The people in base towns do not like the Military. Watch your back never find yourself alone while out in town. Have someone you trust go with you and watch one another. Just a couple of tips. Good luck !!! Start stretching and loosen up. Build your legs and arms now. It will help in the beginning. I'm already proud of you. Give it all you have to give and do one more for the Marine Corps. I gave the same advice to my son.

Amazing is the Marine Corps changed me since going on Active Duty in 1974 through August 28th 1983.... Tours of service in California, Japan, Puerto Rico, North Carolina, and Sicily. I only went home once after Basic Training, and I thoroughly didn't miss family... My objective was my life personally and professionally!!! The Corps was my family, still is Today!!! Semper Fidelis

For The Corps do you need a good score for recon or just good enough score to go to 0311 and will be there tryouts or can you ask to get that job when you see a recruiter and if you know anything can you explain to me about the GT score
@@a.j2368 I am not an expert on this, but your GT (General Technical) Score is comprised of Word Knowledge, Paragraph Comprehension, and Arithmetic Reasoning (AR). A lot of jobs in the Marine Corps have minimum GT Score requirements. If I am not mistaken, Recon requires a 105. If Recon is your ultimate goal then I would recommend getting really good at your job. Be a PT stud and excel at everything you do. Then, either go Recon or try out for MARSOC. Good luck dude!
You should get more marines on your videos talking about their experiences in their MOSs and their advice on living with that MOS, the pros and cons, the career opportunities and such. Love your videos man please keep uploading and share your experience with us young guys
Exactly when he said "Nothing you do is right" (4:14) I instantly felt like this is definitely something I really want to put my all in. Many people laugh when I say that I feel passionate about being a marine. It’s because I’m 5’1, female, fresh out of high school, and not naturally petite, and definitely not the sharpest tool in the shed. But I yearn for discipline and education at the same time. It’s the best of both worlds.
If you are watching this before enlistment really take this video seriously. He accurately addresses the biggest issues most new guys have when joining. Wish I had seen this before i joined, great video.

I’m currently 19, I’ve had a rough life as far as school and home and in general living.. my great grandfather was a navy seal and used to tell me story’s when I was younger and it was a turning point for me and a dream in the making, I love what marines stand for and overall the challenge of the branch. I’ve considered joining in the last year and have finally made up my mind, I want to join not only to be a marine but to be a raider, only promblem is I didn’t pass high school nor I am in shape really for it cause again life hasn’t been so kind, I’m currently working on it though and I plan on joining within the next year after I get my ged and lose the weight and get into better shape, your videos definitely help as far as informing us on how it’s gonna be and so far the only videos that actually explain it so thank you!
Wish I saw this video before I went in but I went in 1994 right out of High School in dead of South Carolina's summer. This thing called Emails started in 1997 I believe. Truth be told, embrace it and not fight it like i did; big mistake. Wouldve learned alot more had I live in that moment instead of waiting for my tour to end. Overall if I had to do it again, I would but with a more opened mind. It was an awesome invaluable learning experience that I would not trade for the world. I used what ever Ive learned from the Marines; especially being gritty and resourceful. Even until this day. Its been over 20 years since I left the Marines and their isnt day that goes by that I don't think about being a part of the greatest fighting force in the world. Not only having the title makes me proud but the many benefits that I have enjoyed as a Marine veteran is also a big plus that still pays off even till now. My family will even get a special military burial benefits from the Marines to bury me; how awesome is that! I even just received 3 years of service to my pension plan at my current job. Oohrah to pensions. Semper fi to all the military vets out there and next generation of Marines. I leave you with a few words of wisdom that I strongly urge to implore from day 1 in the Marines: don't screw it up and get anything other than an honorable discharge when u depart. I beg of all of you who join; extremely important. All the benefits I have received post Marine Corp was due to the fact that I left in good standing with an honorable discharge. Do the right thing at all times and you have nothing to worry about except death. Good luck and God speed.

My son joined Nov of 2015. Paris Island. He says it was to make me proud, but I’ve told him his whole life, how proud I was and still am. No, I’m pretty sure he wanted to prove something to himself. He’s fixing to get out this Nov. He just made Sergeant, but wants to get out and get into law enforcement. Oi!! This man is testing me. Lol. He went over seas twice as ground support. Spain, Italy, Germany, I’m so jealous. Stationed now at Cherry Point, NC. He has grown so much and I couldn’t be more proud of my Marine. Another very important thing is to be in shape before you get to boot camp. It will be very difficult even if you are in decent shape, life will suck if you think boot camp is a place to begin getting into shape. Run, swim, and start walking everywhere you go. Don't get drunk the night before you ship, you will be awake for 36 hours at least, from the time you ship out from your home.
I was looking forward to join the Air Force, but due to a medical condition they said I was disqualified. The marines were the ones who gave me hope and told me that we could work it out. I can’t say I am ready to become a marine since it’s not what I’ve considered, but they treated me like if I already were one of them and that gives me confidence that despite my health condition I may have what it takes.
All recruiters will treat you as they're your best friend. That's they're job. But, they will help you join if that's what you want to do and they will help you get in the shape necessary to meet the minimum qualifications at basic.

Thanks Jim! The thing I remember the most was how in shape I thought I was when I got there... When we received all of our Gear and had to march back to the Squad Bay I remember how brutal my calves and shins burned and how gassed out I was! Its at that moment I realized this wasn't just going to be mentally challenging!

I was expecting to train hard. What I didn't expect was the mind game. I understand now how important that is but that's the toughest part. That's what really changes you for better or worse you will be different. You'll be a Marine.

I went to Boot Camp in '76. Based upon the RU-vid videos of current recruit training : I'd say there's more yelling & animated movements by D.I.'s, but less actual " Hands on" ( less yelling too ) than in 1976. Of course every Marine believes that HIS platoon had the " Last really hard training". Nonetheless, these new Marines of last few decades & up til now have really carried the load & are ministers of death wherever they've been deployed. Once a MARINE, always a MARINE !
Yea, the videos don't do it much justice. The DI's aren't SUPPOSED to swear, and won't if they are being video taped. Great video brother. I was in the Corp from 86 to 90 and I still remember the moment I became a Marine like it was yesterday. Unlike you guys today most of us couldn't wait to be away from home and thats big reason I joined. We started with 94 guys and graduated with 67. Had 1 guys brake the Seniors mug and cut his wrist, had another jump off the 3rd story and another purposely broke his leg. He happened to be the buddy I went in with lol and I had already gone through MOS school and he was still at MCRD. Dumb ass lol. I was really worried that the corp had changed but watching vids brought a smile to my face and a flood of old memories. Youre doing a great job brother keep it up a d fuck the haters. BTW i spent an hour with one of my DI at the airport, it to this day was the best conversation I've ever had with any man. Before I forget make sure these kids get into a little better shape although I smoked a pack a day before I went in and still hit my 300 pft in both 2 and 3rd phase not bragging just saying, don't want any PCPs Thanks again I aways love seeing a brother doing good work.

I was active Marine 1967 to 1971. 1968 in Vietnam. I'm now 73 and I'm proud to be a United States Marine . After my discharge I became a Phoenix. Arizona Police Officer and did 28 years on the dept. I'm also proud of my time as a Phoenix Police Officer. I have been retired for 21 years.

And ad such, I am training as much as I can right now for not only bootcamp but for that as well. I know you must be an NCO for this and I was wanting to go for Recon and then MARSOC to I guess make it an easier transition? I just want your advice on whether I should stay intel till I hit E4 or go Recon whenever they have an opening
@@stripmall7040 I'm not an expert in this category, but I do know that Recon is not required to go MARSOC. I would recommend kicking ass as an E1-E3 get promoted to Corporal and be damn good at your job. Don't kiss ass, but earn respect through your work ethic and leadership skills. Then, when you're an NCO talk to a MARSOC recruiter and figure out what it is that you should do.

Joining the Corps once I graduate high school, I've got the opportunity to get my E-2 from an AA degree and ideally my EMT. I've already taken the ASVAB (can't do the physical yet cus I screwed up my leg with a chainsaw) and am gonna go infantry and move on to recon as soon as I can. The amazing experience is not the Marines it’s the age of being 17 or 18 years old out of high school. Everyone remembers those 4 years out of high school weather in the Marines or not, especially in college. I hated the Marines it ain’t for everyone. It’s just a bunch of stupid stuff you do all the time. I’m glad I got out after 4 years like the majority do.
The four years after high school was my time in the Marines. So that's literally all I remember because that was my life for the next four years... The Marine Corps is DEFINITELY not for everyone. I'm not going to sit here and sugar coat shit and tell these young guys/gals that its a cake walk and all sunshine and rainbows, because its not. You join because you want to earn the title and challenge yourself. What you make of it is what you make of it... The shittiest of shitbags I served with are some of the most motivated ones after they get out... Kind of funny how that works out. I think the Marine Corps is a great environment for someone to grow up quick and learn a thing or two. Just don't be a shitbag....
For The Corps Marines was the first place i witnessed people doing cocaine when I first arrived in Okinawa Japan, Camp Foster in the barracks. Like you said shit bags everywhere. Don’t get brainwashed civilian world is the best experience. Everyone joins for a different reason. Some people live in really bad neighborhoods with bad families and want to get out, go to college etc, not just to earn the title. Honestly man this day and age with so much technology, I would not recommend people to go in the Marines. You get out with no work experience in your resume after 4 years. I would recommend college and work, or Air Force if military.

I spent 7 years enlisted in the Marines in Electronic Countermeasures, then 14 as a Field Artillery Officer after college. It’s a great MOS, but you will spend time in the field-which is exactly what Field Artillerymen want. And-Field Artillery is not combat support. It is one of the combat arms MOS’s (like infantry, armor, etc). But, no matter what your MOS is, you are and will always be a Marine.
Honestly. What you said about embracing the suck made me think of my coaches back when I was in highschool. You have to be hungry. You have to put all of your being in that grind for what you strive for... you gotta want it as much as you wanna breathe. Hopefully, things work out and I'm able to join that brotherhood hella soon

Let’s see do you want to be treated like a child who’s being baby sat? If not then don’t join!! No I disagree boot camp is hella easy, I had to do it twice!! Drill instructors are actually wicked nice people when you talk to them man on man. When I talked to them one on one when I was getting dropped because of something that wasn’t my fault. All my drill instructors wished me luck and even told me they gave me more shit than any recruit because I was older and they knew I could handle it. They all wished me luck and even said they like me as a person. I miss my senior drill instructor, loved that guy!! E Tan, E Epi Tan baby!! Also boot camp was actually fun I miss it. The fleet sucks!! Boot camp was actually relatively fun, with the exception of drill hated that haha
Boot Camp is not hard. Show up, do what you're told and just give a shit about trying to push yourself to become better is what it all boils down to. For many its a culture shock... Not many people have been raised their whole lives being screamed at and told to go faster, and many people aren't used to the early hours, little sleep, or continuous physical PT. Also, Drill Instructors aren't robots... lol They are human beings, many have families and kids and are no different than you or I. They have a job to do, and they have to look and act the part 24/7. They aren't there to be your buddy and pat you on the back. Fleet life isn't sunshine and rainbows either. The Marine Corps is what you make of it. If you don't like being told what to do, when to do it, and how to do it, then you shouldn't have joined the Military in the first place! The Marine Corps especially. I was pretty fortunate to serve under some great leadership, but had my fair share of shit SNCO's. It is what it is. The grass ain't always greener on the outside... Semper Fi!

I am 16 right now, I'm just finishing up sophomore year. I come from a military family, but I'm still debating about USMC or U.S Army. I like both alot but I dont know which one I am better cut out for. Any tips?
I always recommend the Marine Corps, but I'm biased... Either is a great decision. Joining the Military in general is a great experience. When you are referring to which branch you are better cut out for, do you mean physical shape? The Marine Corps isn't any more difficult than the Army. Hey man,love the video. I'm glad there's guys like you out there willing to give advice to young people like me. I've talked to my fair share of guys, 6 army, which includes my sister and her fiance and 1 marine. Only half of those people didnt push me to one area. One of the army guys was with 75th Ranger Regiment so he was all RLTW. Another guy wanted me to go officer in the army. 3rd guy was a 12b (combat engineer) in the army and was all Sapper clears the way. The other 4 being 2 12b's a marine and well a army cook that almost went infantry. They were and still are insanely helpful.

I graduated boot camp in August, 1967 and to this day i still have the eagle,globe and anchor that my drill instructor gave me. It reminds me of the blood, sweat and tears i left on Parris Island. Semper Fi/ do or die.

I joined at age 17 via the Delayed Entry Program, right after my Junior year in high school in 1985. A very good way to join then as it gave me a whole lot of time to prepare for Boot Camp as a poolee. I went to MCRD SD from June thru August 1986, then served a 6-year tour on active duty. It is all about effort - Semper Fi!

Hey! Wonderful video! Im 19 and about to graduate high school with my associates degree. I’m really considering doing another 2 years in college and doing what it takes to be a Marine Corps Officer. The thing I want out of the US Marines is to help build my self mentally and physically. I am ready and will be ready to face major adversity because I know it’ll provide growth. I also want to be able to go to sleep knowing I accomplished something that day, Another major thing is that I would like to help others, whether it be in the field or not. I love the US and it’s values. What would you recommend to me? And do I have any misconceptions or have the wrong idea about the Marines? Thanks!
Glad to hear that you liked the video and that is great to hear! From the sounds of it you have a pretty solid outlook on things. The Marine Corps is challenging, but absolutely an experience that will allow you to grow physically and mentally. Go in with an open mind and get comfortable being uncomfortable! It doesn't sound like you're going to have a problem with that. Never kiss ass, but rather show your worth through the results of your actions. Bust your ass in PT, learn, learn learn, ask questions, learn some more and good things will come. As for finishing your degree and going the Officer route...I think that is a great idea. You've already got the Associates Degree, so what's 2 more years? I would talk with an Officer Selection Officer and discuss some options. The Marine Corps is an amazing experience, but its not all sunshine and rainbows! You will definitely deal with your fair share of bullshit. I'd recommend it to everyone! Stephen Payton you should finish the other 2 years of College and get your Bachelors, and apply for OCS after you get your Associate degree. I almost enlisted in the Air Force,after high school, as a way to pay for my college; I took the ASVAB and physical, but changed my mind. Instead, I decided I wanted to be a Marine Corps pilot, so I found another way to pay for college (got a full time job to pay for it). I got accepted into OCS after my sophomore year and successfully completed the program. Once I graduated, and received my commission, I went to TBS (The Basic School) for 6 months, then to my MOS training; I had a problem with vision in my left eye, so no flight school. My 5.5 years in the Marine Corps, getting out as a Captain, were AMAZING. I resigned my commission to pursue a more lucrative career in Pharmaceutical Sales. Bottom line, get the Commission and enjoy the Corps. Semper Fi future devil dog, smooth sailing and fair winds.

If I had the opportunity to do it all over again I would join the Marine Corps in a heartbeat. I loved the Corps. It was a great experience and I was able to see some cool places and meet even better people. I miss it every day. With that being said, the Marine Corps ain’t perfect and it definitely isn’t all sunshine and rainbows! It’s what you make of it man. Get ready to embrace the suck and have fun! Definitely a good point. A lot of folks I've met over the years crushed it on the ASVAB, but still opted to go into the infantry. A lot of people join for the experience rather than the job.
@@Lee-lp8fd That's all the recruiter offered you? I would tell him to pound sand... Unless you want to go either of those. There is certain times where MOS's are closed I believe and they offer you ones that need to be filled. I would be firm with what you want.
I can't make that decision for you man... When I talk to people who want to join, I always tell them to join the Marine Corps for the experience rather than the job... People are always looking for an MOS that will give them the opportunity to gain skills that will transfer out into the civilian world. In my experience, just having the Military experience gives you an edge on a resume... If you decide to get out, utilize the GI Bill and get paid to go to college for a degree that interests you. Pick an MOS that sounds fun, man and go have fun!

I don't think that's possible... You'd have to talk to an OSO (Officer Selection Recruiter) and ask. There might be an ROTC route? But, again I'm not an expert in this area and your questions can be better answered by one of those guys or gals... Good luck to you!
You can ‘enlist’ with a degree but everyone there will think you’re stupid. You went to college and you proved that you’re smarter than most... you should try to get ‘commissioned’ as an officer. You don’t enlist, you have to be selected and honestly most people can (70% selection rate) it’s all mental. I’m graduating June 2021 and currently talking to retired OSO’s before I talk to an active one. I’m planning on going thru the Law program of PLC but there are other programs like Air & Ground officers.
One of the best days in my Marine Corps life was graduation day. I'll never forget being told, "I am proud to be the first one to call you a Marine". God bless the Corps

How far along in college are you? I contemplated officer route as I approached the end of my 4 year enlistment, but opted not too. Officer side of things has some benefits...Better pay, better housing, better opportunities, etc. When I think of an officer, I think of a lot of paperwork, sitting behind a desk, and dealing with all the bullshit that I personally wouldn't want to deal with. I think officer route would be a great choice. The opportunities are far better for an officer when they leave the military. They are in charge of A LOT more people. For me personally, I enjoyed the enlisted side and all of my mentors and guys I looked up to were enlisted. Good luck on your journey and let me know how it goes!
For The Corps Thank you for responding I’m a high school senior right now about to become a freshman in college , I’m looking into the NROTC scholarship. I love the field stuff that enlisted do but I want to become a officer because it’s a better lifestyle and my parents said if I go to the military I have to go to college first so i can have a career after. As a young 2nd Lt in the marines what could I expect to do. Will I still be In the field or will I sit behind a desk. @@marcuse7261 As a 2nd LT, your day to day will vary greatly depending on your specific MOS. If there is one piece of advice I would give a new 2nd LT, it would be to not come to the "Fleet" acting like you're the shit and you know everything. I saw many 2nd LTs who thought they were badass and above everyone. A degree doesn't make you a good leader and that shiny bar on your collar doesn't automatically earn you respect. You will be taking over your new platoon as the "Butter Bar", "Boot LT" and your Marines will see right through that know it all crap. You'll be working with seasoned SNCO's who have 10-15 years in the Corps and know their shit! You'll quickly find out what type of leader you are when you hit the fleet, but take care of your Marines, learn and do your job well and gain their respect rather than demand it and you'll be fine! Be ready for paperwork, meetings, power point presentations, and long hours. I will look into putting a video together for ya in the near future! I post weekly videos every Wednesday! Marcus Esketit Marcus Esketit I’m currently trying to become an officer in the Marine Corps. I’ve done NROTC and hopefully I get the chance to go to OCS next summer. I do PLC now if you have any questions on that too. All I would add to what For The Corps said would be to read up. Read books and learn about the Marine Corps. Learn the lifestyle of an Officer because its very different. Some recommendations would be Leaders Eat Last and my personal favorite Joker One. Learn what MOS you want, NROTC will try to introduce you to that world. But TBS is where you will find your calling in terms of MOS, no need to worry right now. My biggest recommendation for you would be to learn from your AMOI and MOI in NROTC. Recognize your mistakes and ask for guidance. Because once you hit the fleet you need to be ready. You’ll still be a butter bar, but you need to earn that respect little by little. Hope this helps and if you got any questions on NRTOC and stuff like that I can help. Otherwise For The Corps should be your point of reference on everything Marine Corps. Good Luck
My father was a Marine and I want to join the military as a Marine but my dad doesn't want me to because of his poor experience in the Marine Corps but I already know that I am more suited for the military than my dad was at my age so I pretty confident about it and my dad also likes to say that I don't know what I'm talking about and that makes me want to join the Marine Corps just because he don't want me to.
Us Active Duty folks tend to shit on the reserves a little. "weekend warriors" and what not, but at the end of the day you're still a Marine! I always recommend anyone to do at least 4 years on Active Duty and then if its not for you, go reserves. Its definitely a different Marine Corps. You have to hold yourself accountable as you're only with your unit once a month and two weeks out of the year. I would just recommend not being a shit bag, and maintain the Marine Corps standards! I've run into a couple of Marine Reservists that were overweight and looked like crap. Just remember you're representing the Corps!
