Worked for me after about 5 mins of trial and error. The best part of this was the (I guess obvious in hindsight) observation that taper means too high, snipe means too low. That’s what was missing in other videos of the same type. A couple of taps up and down and I’m there. Thanks.

So I found your small workshop walkthrough video then what you need to start this venture. Finally this video that talks about jointer set up. I struggled for hours today trying to edge joint boards on my new jointer. I'm getting about a 1/32 gradual cup. Both ends are flush the last few inches but the middle section of all the boards have a gap. Thank you for this video. Now I can't wait to try again tomorrow.

Can either of u elaborate? The only thing I can think of that might still not give a good cut with a correctly set outfeed is putting a lot of pressure on the 1st half the board that's already gone through but even then if the table is set right there shouldn't be any movement, so I'm slightly confused by what u mean by technique. Thanks

So much for the 0.003" higher blades rule. I set my Craftsman 6" jointer blades a smidge high, so that it pulls the material about 1/4" forward with each blade catching on the wood during rotation (rotating by hand). But this is obviously too high, and not a good method because with the blades slightly higher than the outfeed table, there is dramatic snipe at the end of the wood, no matter how flat you push the board through. After watching this video I'm assuming that putting the blades near 0.000" to the outfeed table is a better starting point, especially because the vibration and run-out of the cutter head on the old bearings could create a deeper cut.
@djfubarius
@djfubarius 3 года назад
I love the way you keep it simple in your videos. Can you do one like this jointer video but for the planer? I've seen other videos on planer adjustment but I can't seem to apply the knowledge to reduce snipe.
@Lincolnstww
@Lincolnstww 3 года назад
Thanks, I can add it to the list. Unfortunately you can never completely get rid of snipe on small lunchbox planers. But it can be minimized I always keep my pieces 3-4" long until after I'm done with milling.

This is great. I have the same jointer and am trying to use the same approach, but having trouble making fine adjustments to the outfeed table height using the adjustment lever. It seems impossible to smoothly move it a hair up or down. Were you using any particular technique when adjusting the height at the 3:35 mark? Thanks -- love the channel!

Great video ,just wanted to ask if you or anyone here may have any idea ,I am new to using planner ,And have a question ,Does the outfeed and infeed table need to have a even gap where the blade is ,On my machine one side is 40mm gap and the other is 45mm , does this really matter so long as the blade is at even Hight >? to the table ? I am little confused . Please Help !!!
@martinfletcher2729
@martinfletcher2729 Год назад
If the jointer isn't set up correctly it is difficult to get the straight piece of wood that is required to set up the outfeed table! It is easier to use a piece of straight 1/4 thick plywood on its edge to set up the outfeed table. The plywood will feed straight into the cutter block from the infeed table whereas a not straight piece of timber could be moving up and down due to the irregular edge (bowed, taperd etc.) on the infeed table.

Hi John. I have a bench top when and totally screwed it up. Can you please write to me about what the height of the infeed should be relative to the cutter head because I think I may have an issue with that as well. Thank you.

If you want to joint one face but your board is too wide, can you run it through once and then turn the board around and run it through again in order to catch the half that didn't get jointed?

I cannot adjust the height of the outfeed table, only the blades. How should I set the blades against the outfeed table? Thanks. My planks get more thinner on the feed side, almost taking up the shape of a V.

@steelwood74
@steelwood74 2 года назад
Your jointer has straight knives? The outfeed table/bed on spiral head jointers are fixed, you can't raise or lower them. This process then is harder.

Does your DeWalt planer have a StarWars pun? Was thinking you need a sand crawler pun but I think you’re more clever at these puns. Wood-sandcrawler... Wooden Sand Crawler. Wood Crawler. Might read well if it’s surrounded by a sandcrawler outline.

It doesn't. I've been stuck on that one for awhile. I bounced around sand crawler but could never get anything punny enough. It will come eventually. I just added 3 others that will show up in the next couple videos
