Thanks for being so thorough. As a beginner I use an old Craftsman I rebuilt (it was trash). Its fence is incomplete (no lockdown mechanism) and normally isn't square with the blade, so every cut I make I have to measure it from each side of the blade and then clamp the other end of the fence with a C-clamp, and pray it doesn't move during a cut. You are so lucky to have a real table saw!

I really enjoyed your no nonsense video. I have watched several videos on using and setting up the jointer. Your video is straight, to the point and is explained so anyone can actually understand what you are talking about. Thanks!

actually what i do is to keep pressure on the back as i start thru then transfer my pressure to the front after i reach the halfway point, if i am jointing something that has a ggod size bowin it and i am forced to joint it with the bowed side down the above will not work, in this case i keep the pressure on the infeed side ( starting side)...

Set the fence to 90deg. Plane the wider side putting the hollow side to the bed to a flat finish. Turn through 90deg again with the hollow side to the bed, and the planed face up against the square fence, and plane until straight. If you are planing two pieces put them edge to edge and you should not see a gap if the cutters are set correctly. We call it a Surface Planer in England.

Thanks or sharing your knowledge. One point though.... You say a couple of times in the video that the jointer makes parallel surfaces, and when you finish squaring up to edges you say the two faces are parallel. There not parallel, they're perpendicular. Big difference.

Thanks for the tip on how to slowly bring a board with a heavy bow back down to a workable straightness. You zeroed out your jointer and made sure that it is set at a 90 degree but I am still a little confused about the to movable sides. If I feed a board across the blade and the blade is set to remove say 1/16th of an inch, shouldn't the receiving side be set to 1/16th HIGHER than the starting side of the jointer? This way the wood does not "droop" by that removed amount on the other side?

The outfeed table should always stay perfectly true/even with the top of the blades, the infeed table is lowered to remove the amount of material you choose.

Mr. Neil, first I would like to say thank you very much for your educational on jointer. I am in Thailand and I have some question to ask if I may. How important is it for fence jointer to be perfectly straight? I just bought my and when I brought it home I found out my fence is off centre by 1/8" inches and the fence is 35" long and it is 12" jointer. I would love to have everything perfectly straight, but this is Thailand. it is very difficult to find thing and I drove 5 hrs to pick this jointer up. What can I do? Thank you for your help. Mike

steve, i do not have one on Radial arm saws...maybe one day...they have a tendency to be a little unsafe, i much prefer a table saw

I think you mean 2x perpendicular faces
@Patrick-kc5ur
@Patrick-kc5ur 6 лет назад
Charles stop using the word "parallel" at 4:25 in regards to the jointer. A jointer can't make 2 surfaces parallel. Period. It can make them square or at 90 degress, but not parallel which only a thickness planer can do.

Too much work . Just do a quick straight line rip on your table saw and then joint it.
