On captain k's final uniform he added alot of decorations, one of the things he added was a *pink triangle which the nazis used to identify homosexuals
Also as they noticed out it looks like they are not even trying to shoot anyone at the end. They're going out but making sure they absolutely dont hurt anyone doing it.
I can't understand why this film divides so many. Not once does it disrespect what people went through and the gravity of the situation. It only ridicules the notion of indoctrination and 2nd-hand hatred. The most disturbing thing is that lessons like this still need to be taught.
ThatAussieGirl I think Craig is talking about the other people who didn't like it. There were protests against the movie from multiple sides. People saying making fun of Hitler is not allowed because it downplays his actions. Or that you shouldn't make a comedy about war. I disagree of course. I think making fun of Hitler or Nazis is a powerful way to defuse their evil and ridicule their ideas.
@@Yggdrasil42 There's a dangerous flip side to using comedy to defuse and ridicule their ideas. It makes what Hitler did easier to dismiss as not all that serious. Something that has rubbed off on supporters of Trump in regards to the "acceptable" number of pandemic related deaths in America. Same thing as Inglorious Basterds. Portraying WWII as a fantasy story makes it harder for people to grasp something like the Holocaust as an historical reality.
My theory is they caught the mom and the SS dropped by to inspect the house afterwards. Sam's character heard the news and tried to get there first which is he randomly pops in. Instead, he puts himself out to cover them after being too late.
There's a lot of stuff with his character that isn't spelled out to the audience. For example, why has a decorated war-hero, who is an expert marksman, been relegated to training hitler youth?
_"If everyone would have liked it, I know I’d have made a terrible safe mediocre film“ -Taika Waititi_ *Jojo Rabbit* is the sort of movie that should be taught in schools because it shows kids how to think for themselves, and to not just assume that what is going on around you is true or right. It teaches kids to educate themselves and to listen to the oppressed rather than the oppressors. Chur from NZL. xox
I hope they will be able to withstand the future mob, forcing them and the public to agree with them or be attacked for being the enemy. Let's hope the kids of today will be able to resist this madness.
What you must remember is that this film takes place in 1945 meaning Jojo was born in 1935, the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933. In 1936 membership became mandatory for all 'aryan' children. Nazism is all that was taught in schools and it was common for children to inform on their parents. So I find this film to be even more poignant as this shows a young boy struggle against all that he knows. Even before he meets the Jewish girl in the attic he has trouble with their actions, he doesn't fight in the melee, he hesitates when burning books and doesn't kill the rabbit. This is also what I think Captain K sees in him and what he identifys with so much that he wants to protect him.
Captain K was clearly trying to protect Jojo as in the scene where he arrives at Jojo House after the Gestapo if you are paying attention you see he is out of breath and carrying the bike that belongs to Jojo's mum.
And, based on that timeline, there is a good chance that Captain K - probably in his 20s in 1945 - may not have even realized his sexuality until after the Nazis came to power and it was a matter of life or death to hide it. His military service would certainly have made him aware of what happened to homosexuals, since they were another group of people that were killed as part of the Final Solution. His war hero status and command of the city may have made him able to hide in plain sight. If you look closely you will see in the scene with his crazy updated uniform the nazi symbol for homosexuals on his hat (upside down pink triangle) and Finkle's cape.
I love this movie. I think why the comedy works is because it's specifically poking holes in the logic of the Nazi ideology without making light of the actual atrocities. Their logic was so flimsy and, frankly, ridiculous. But when a character you love dies, that moment isn't played for laughs and is treated with all the respect we would expect from a straight dramatic movie. Taika Waititi nailed it with his direction.
Also, the light tone and the comedic aspect is because most of the movie is life seen through the lense of a child. Sure, it is now looked at desperate times and all... But back then, a child wouldn't have seen it like this. They would have fun, and be kids... The tone of the movie is clearly centered around Jojo, and him growing and realising more about life around him, racism, danger, etc... Not every WWII movie need to be fucking sepia and all around dark as hell.
@@moeball740 Have you seen other Kiwi(New Zealand) movies. I think you'd really enjoy them. That quirky, offbeat style is really just the general style for movies over here.
"Best gay dad ever" I LOVE YOU BOTH HAHAHA also you're the only reactors I've seen that actually caught on to the fact that Captain K and Finkel were lovers, and also the only ones who noticed how crestfallen Captain K was when the nazis were being rounded up to be killed, because Finkel had died before him.
I knew I wasn't hallucinating or something, they're really together. Also I didn't notice that Finkel died in the end I thought maybe they got separated.
I noticed it too. I feel rally bad for the guy really, he tried so hard to help both Jojo and his own lover, and in the end he sacrificed himself to save Jojo. Underrated character.
Sam Rockwells character turns up at Jojos house on a bike and quite out of breath... he had found out about Jojos mother and rushed to intercept Stephen Merchants snitch crew. They make it clear that he helps by ignoring the wrong birth date mistake but it's only on 2nd viewing, knowing what happens, that I questioned why he turned up in the first place. Which would mean that he knows Jojos mother is dead through that whole scene, adds a new dimension to the scene. A nice touch I thought.
You can tell Sam Rockwell isn't into the nazi thing from the book burning scene, where he stands in the back on first viewing just looking intimidating, but on second viewing looking angry because of what they are doing.
@@Yggdrasil42 in German no one would ever say German shepherds (Deutsche Schäfer) if he meant to say German shepherd dogs (Deutsche Schäferhunde). So the confusion makes no sense in the German translation. But I prefer in this movie the original in general, especially the cheesy fake German accents.
The strangest thing about Jo Jo Rabbit is the things shown in the Hitler Youth camp actually happen in real life. Children were regularly seriously injured in stabbings, beatings, getting accidentally shot and hit by blasts from grenades. The camp organisers not only didn't stop bullying they actively encouraged it.
I took my son to this film when he was 13. We had our choice between this and "Call of the Wild". I regret nothing, he easily caught the jokes and the irony of the film. One of the greatest moments in my heart as a father that I will treasure
I plan on watching this with my 14 year old niece. I was worried that maybe at their age they wouldn’t understand many things in the movie and the dark reality behind it because they haven’t learned about it in school yet (or maybe they did, I’m not sure). But now reading your comment I think I was worried for no reason. Definitely gonna watch this movie with my niece. Thank you!
Hitler keeps offering him cigarettes, which just goes to show how much he really didn't know. Hitler hated smoking and wouldn't allow anyone to smoke anywhere around him. Jojo is just assuming that he smoked, maybe because he's a grown-up and most grown-ups smoked.
"The first country the Nazis invaded was their own." If you want to check out great films Taika directed, watch HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE and EAGLE VS SHARK and WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS.
Haha yeah I was about to say Boy! Boy is the cream of the crop but I have heard from non New Zealand friends I've shown it to that they don't get it, so maybe it is more of a Kiwi movie. But I recommend still giving it a swing. It is very similar in style to this movie meshing tragedy and comedy to bring the reality.
@@el_bizcocho6916 Hitler`s mother was German and he preferred his mother`s side of the family for obvious reasons. His dad was a physically and verbally abusive drunken bureaucrat who disrespected his son`s artistic aspirations as 'effeminate' and 'petit-bourgeois'.
I LOVE Johansson in this. Best character I have watched her bring alive ever. So real. Disappointed that so few noticed. I also love his little friend with the glasses. I would watch a whole movie with him in it. So great! One of my fav films.
Taika Waititi blends comedy and real thematic depth incredibly well. I’ve heard this isn’t his best film either, which only makes me want to watch ALL of his films. Definitely worthy of the hype it got.
Hunt for the wilderpeople and boy are two of the best movies to come out in the last decade. What we do in the shadows is the funniest movie in years all by taika.
I didn't think Hunt for the Wilderpeople had much depth (even though it was entertaining). What We Do in the Shadows is fantastic in how it plays with modern-day Vampires though!
I second both these comments! Hunt for the Wilderpeople is probably my fav Taika film, but I love ‘em all. Eagle vs Shark is another good one to watch. 🙂
Don't worry about tearing up. I'm a 46 year old man and this tears me up every time in multiple places. I saw this by myself the first time. Then I watched it with my wife and knew I was in trouble when she made the comment that she really liked Scarlett Johansson's shoes early in the movie. The twist later was gut-wrenching. But this was a great movie that really looked at WWII from a different light. Great comedy and great drama all in one.
Two fun facts about Hitler: He didnt eat meat and created the first anti-smoking campaign. The movie is telling you this kid doesnt know a thing about Hitler.
Jojo got the surprise visit from the Gestapo because they had just dicovered his mother was a spy and was executed. That is why Sam Rockwell(Captain K) showed up on Rosies bike with freddie Finkle. He showed up as fast as he could to help Jojo not get in trouble.
This movie just has so much to keep coming back to. The themes and the symbolism are set up and followed through on consistently and in so many ways. One of my favorite bits of symbolic continuity is connecting Jojo to the rabbit: he hunts for carrots to feed his family and when it's unsafe he finds a nice safe hole to weather through. Captain K is one of my favorite characters in a long time because he makes such an excellent foil to Rosie and Elsa. Like Rosie, he obviously doesn't believe in Nazi ideology, but his circumstances as a gay man with military experience in Nazi Germany mean that he's walking a thinner tightrope and has to resist in more subtle ways (like deterring Jojo from his outlandish claims about Jews, subtly dissuading Jojo from reporting anyone he finds, and protecting Elsa when he's given the chance). When he encounters Elsa, he's showing solidarity with someone else who's hiding in plain sight.
The performances in this movie are so good, especially the kids! The boys were obviously wonderful, but quick shoutout to Thomasin McKenzie who was brilliant as Elsa.
Kind of a side note, but the majority of captured Wehrmacht soldiers were simply released after the German surrender. Only the high ranking officers and officials were tried at Nuremberg. However, many were killed by the Allies in several documented war crimes. While some were murdered by the British, French, Americans, and other western allies. The Soviets are believed to have executed many prisoners both legally and illegally. The Soviets had a very understandable desire for revenge after the devastation brought on by the German war machine, and for atrocities committed at places such as Stalingrad. When the Soviets won the attrition and invaded Germany, many sought to do to the Germans what the Germans had done to them. *Edit:* I forgot the mention the neat detail that in the earlier scenes of the movie, when Jojo has a relatively high opinion of Hitler, he sees him in his bright, tan dress uniform. But when he opens his eyes and sees the world for what it is and Hitler for who he is, then Hitler changes to the drab grey uniform worn by German officers. It shows how Hitler has been sort of demoted in Jojo's eyes.
whats perhaps not easy to pick up on is that after Deertz (Stephen Merchant) asks Elsa for her papers, Captain K then almost immediately steps in and acts impatient and all "come on, we dont have all day" so that she will hand it to him instead of Deertz. Captain K knew right away what was going on even before seeing her papers, and was set on protecting her and Jojo, but he had to make it believable so that Deertz wouldnt be suspicious, hence why he pushes her for her birth date and so on. And when Deertz then interrupts, Captain K holds out Elsa's papers for Deertz with a defeated look on his face, thinking they were about to be caught all three.
Captain K was working with the Resistance. That's why he was so blunt when Jojo asked what to do if he finds a Jew, K thought Jojo might have suspicions about Elsa, and was discouraging Jojo from potentially telling.
The scene with the butterfly leading to the shoes is a direct reference to the film 'All Quiet on the Western Front' (1930). And what happened next crushed me in the theatre, too...
I saw Jojo Rabbit in the cinema twice. And of course, seen it again here. And Rosie's death never fails to make me cry. It's even sadder and more profound in a way because Scarlett Johansson had Jewish relatives in the Berlin slums who all died in the Holocaust. Some of them were just kids. So, it's a story connected to her background. And Taika Waititi has Jewish heritage too. On the other hand, it's extremely satisfying getting to see people with Jewish ancestry mock the Nazis.
Even though he is only 10 or 11 in this film it still shocks me that Roman Griffin Davies has never acted before. The way he acts through the death of his mother is heat breaking.
I remember rather hesitantly showing the movie trailer to my German friend [because I’m not insensitive] , she immediately reacted by saying “OMFG this looks hilarious” and then added, it’s time. She watched and loved the film [there is no love for hitler among modern Germans, well apart from the occasional loony]. I think it deals with the material really well. Propaganda is all around us, we all need to be wary of it. Also, the shoe scene ;-; Brilliant.
The genius of this movie is its use of contrast, the humour and tragedy, the innocence and brutality, the heroism (the mum and captain) and conformity (the various other characters) all exemplified by the delightful childlike innocence of a child's invisible friend but the hideous reality of that friend being Hitler. A truly amazing, striking and emotional film.
I always liked the part when Yorkie told Jojo that he was sorry about what happened to his mother and that he cried for days. Jojo gives it a brief moment of mutual understanding before switching the topic to all the havoc unfolding around them with an authoritative "What's going on around here!?" like the little "Field Marshall" his character arc turned out to be during the 3rd act to the story.
The swept the house already, hence Sam’s character arriving with Rosie’s bike to cover for Jojo. He knew Rosie was dead and rushed to Jojo’s house so that he would be okay.
Ive watched this reaction 4 times. It is the best reaction ever. Thank you so much for your knowledge of history, story telling devices, and of actors. You both are amazing!!!!!
I saw this by myself late at night at the theatre. Bawled my eyes out at the shoes scene, what a wonderful film throughout. Love that you're reacting to this!
man, this movie was a masterpiece, also the detail that in the movie hitler is eating steak and offering the kid cigarettes, where in real life he was a vegetarian and against cigarettes is just amazing.
Just a note. The soldiers executing Captain K and the other captured Germans are Red Army troops from the Soviet Union. Of course, the Americans also committed the same types of war crimes in several instances, but at least in that scene, those are Soviets. Awesome channel ladies. You totally got my sub.
The Soviets mostly took prisoners too, but SS, Einzegrouppen, and when they got into Germany, Gestapo, were usually lined up and shot. Horrible as it is, the Nazis were at their absolute worst in Eastern Europe, with Einzegrouppen and allied paramilitary forces often rounding up and executing entire villages and small towns. Most, if not all accounts of Americans summarily executing prisoners are from the liberation of the concentration camps, or occurred during D-Day and the rest of the Normandy invasion, the most famous two being the Coal Yard Shooting at Dachau and the killing of multiple German prisoners by Lt Ronald Spiers on D-Day.
Ok, I've seen this 2 or 3 times, and other's reactions, and just realized she has the "Free Germany" flyers pinned to her pants as she's hanging there.
Your reactions to this film are definitely the best on youtube. In my opinion, the selected essential scenes and your emotions for them are what is necessary in videos of this type.I really like it, you can see that you are a pure soul.
Fell in love with ScarJo’s character in this… and broken hearted for Jojo “shoe lace scene”… 20:30 This reminded me of Alan Turing. (Apologize, on a “philosophical bender”?) But you’ll remember that Turing broke Enigma, essentially ending WWII in Europe. Then spent the rest of his life in prison for loving a man. 🥺 Are we, were we the “good ones”?
a quote from my mom after i showed her this movie - "i feel very conflicted because i love gay hitler and i feel like saying that is somehow wrong" i saw this in theaters and sobbed like a baby. it's in my top five favorite movies of all time and will probably stay there. it's the kind of movie people will judge without ever watching and that is a damn shame. it makes you really think about things.
The big brother of my granpa died in the eastern front at the age of 14 fighting the russians. Crazy times. Now some of my best friends are russian. One big suggestion. You have to watch "Downfall"
I LOVE this film 😍 Thank you for an intelligent, well-rounded reaction/review. I took my kids (10 &13) who laughed at the jokes but also understood the absurdity of hating people for being different. I'm so thankful I could share this with my kids it made something that's very abstract to them (WWII & Nazis) into something tangible.
Captain K knew they killed his Mom that is why he rushed over to his house to try and save Jojo from the SS. That is why he told Jojo "stay home and look after your family and this knife." I feel this was a little like Jame And The Giant Peach. In that movie the little boy was being abused by the adults that is why he invented his fantastical world with living creatures all of his own. In this movie Jojo invented a father figure Hitler to help him through the War and the loss of his Father.
When we watched it in the theaters, my boyfriend was halfway through being sad an got really angry at how they were just going to kill a kid because he was wearing that coat.
Imagine being a Jewish person taking shelter, going outside, and seeing American, British or even Soviet flags. The sense of freedom and relief would be insane.
Great reaction! And great bringing up the Russian losses. We always see WW2 from the US and Western European perspective, but most of Hitler's war was in Eastern Europe. The number of deaths in Russia, Poland, Ukraine, Belarus are just unimaginable.
The soviets were the first to find the death camps and they were facing massive massacres from the German invasion. So a lot of them took out revenge against Germany anyway they could.
Oh, you're referring to going house to house and killing two thirds on any family they found? Women and children? In reality 'Inga' would likely be dead for the heinous crime of being part of a german family. And if JoJo's mother was alive, she could've been killed too. And we all saw how much of a Nazi she was. The massacres committed by the Russian forces don't even compare to the systematic death worshipping of the Nazi Party, but it doesn't make it right. It's just another group of hateful people killing innocent people, it's very dangerous to play sophist and try and justify it as 'revenge'. It's literally why we have rules to warfare.
Not really, Polish resistance was the first one to document the nazi death camps, its just that many people in the West did not believe them at first. Also the red army advancing west was usually just as brutal against non-german civilian population as they were against the Germans
Lots of different countries were the first to the various different death camps. The armies often allowed the prisoners to decide what to do with the guards. The initial treatment of the prisoners by their rescuers often killed them with kindness until people had worked out how to re feed them. I have to disagree with your perspective on the German people and slipping into Nazi ism. Their is a direct correlation between them and the Russian people and their support of Putin now. The Russian people are condoning a a brutal war for no reason other than the insane wish of that evil man Putin. Whilst I appreciate the apathy that has allowed the Russians to say I have nothing to do with politics. And the fact that there is a lot of oppression and violence that keeps them apathetic. But for every Russian that chooses to ignore the reality that Putins war is intent on exterminating Ukrainians as a culture and exterminating the peolple in acts of genocide. There needs to be some who stand up and say this is wrong. For evil to flourish all it takes is someone to ignore it and not to stand up for what is right. What you think Putin could imprison all the millions and millions of Russians , where , it’s isn’t possible. You needed to listen to Lviv radio where they interview Russian Prisoner of wars to hopefully exchange them for Ukrainian prisoner of wars. This war is also the fault of every single Russian how sleep walks into supporting genocide. Watch some of those videos and you will understand the banality of evil and how just saying no was an option in everyone’s story but they didn’t. The German people have faced their collective guilt , learnt from it and have grown as a people. Russians won’t improve their lot in life until they have recognised the evil they have done though apathy and they need to resolve that it will be never again. In addition you do know that so many Russians in WWII died not because they were brave and wanted to save their country but because Stalin forced them to, with death squads behind for men and women. Your general and historical history is very basic here. Don’t ever confuse apathy as not being able to do anything , it’s choosing not to do anything and allowing evil to flourish.
Great review Ladies. This really shows how easy it is manipulate young people into the beliefs. Much harder with adults. But to see it in this perspective was amazing. All of the actresses and actors were very believable they made you feel their emotions they were going through. No matter how many times I see this movie. When JoJo turns around and sees his mother hanging, it feels like I have been punched in the gut.
Ya know? I have watched that ending dance scene a bunch of times now. I really think both of the young actors are channeling David Bowie dance moves ♥ Warms my soul.
My grandma was born in America but only for the dual citizenship . Her parents travelled here just to give birth to her but she grew up in Hamburg Germany . She was 16-17 when she worked as a telephone operator in Hamburg train station. She was pulled from her desk and forced to take the Jews luggage and separate the men women and children. Open the luggage and take alll the gold and jewelry. She never told me about this until she was about 75. She died this year at age 95. History is crazy.
I have a buddy at church, he is getting old, but his story is important. He was twelve years old when the SS gave his class panzershrek anti tank rockets and sent them in to stop the American tanks. Those that were to scared were hung as an example.
I think jojo rabbit is like life, life can be horrific and funny all at the same time. When you remember a dark parts of your life and remembering something funny remember laughing.
In the book Caging Skies (jojo rabbit is based on it), it's much darker. Instead of his face getting a scar, half of his face was paralyzed and part of his arm was removed. Instead of a few days(?), the book is over years where Johannes and Elsa talk and such. Instead of ending and Elsa realizing the war is over though, Johannes keeps up with the lie that the Nazi's won the war. For four years.
this movie is a cinematic masterpiece! Damn even though it was pretty funny it got way darker the second half and I was actually surprised its pg (age 6) rated here in Germany. I mean its good because you can show it kids in school which should definitely happen in the future. Kids can handle way more than we think they can so I think early on they should already learn about ww2 to ensure something like this doesn’t happen again
29:02 An excerpt from a book that I can't remember the name of where someone explained what we did to Nazi's - "There were people who commited genocide. They got a trial. Then they died." "What about the ones who were just following orders?" "We killed them too."
In regards to Russians summarily killing Nazi prisoners... it was common for them to do that - even though it was against the Geneva Convention. As the allies closed in on Germany on numerous fronts, German civilians lived especially in fear of Russian brutality when they overran an area. It's important to understand that, even though Russia was an ally of the western nations at that time, it was still ruled by a despot as bad as Hitler ever was. Stalin murdered (purged) millions of his own people, and it's estimated that he killed more innocent people than Hitler ever dreamed of. In the final months of the war, German women suffered the most at the hands of Russian soldiers... primarily from rape, which it's been documented that the Russians were infamous for.
