I saw this film in theaters and I won’t forget the scene with his mom. I thought the butterfly was going to get ran over by a car or something but when he stands up and you see the shoes, the room went dead quiet and you heard a few audible gasps. Such a fantastic movie!

Easily one of the best movies ever; so unbelievably touching. Captain K's story is so brilliant; the fact that he shows up to JoJo's house not by luck but because he knew Rosie was caught (he shows up with her bike, after all) and wanted to protect JoJo and seeing him piece together what's happening and helping the best he can is so touching. What a movie.

So many reactors don't seem to know the Hitler Jugend was a real thing, basically fascist scouts... When you go to the cemeteries in Normandy and visit the German one, you see thousands graves of children who were 16-17 on D-Day. Children who were 11-12 when the war started...

Havent been to normandy but at that stage the actual hitler jugend were recruited exclusively into the 12th ss panzer division that fought at Caen on the British/Canadian/polish sector. Up until late 1944 a german boy, hitler jugend or not, would normally do a year in ‘community service’ after leaving school - at that time usually anti-aircraft batteries in germany - before going into the official military. So former hitler jugend were 18-19 by the time they got to the front except for those who went directly into the 12th SS from 1943 onwards. That broke down entirely in 1945 when the allies crossed the german border. Im aware of 17 year olds in france but ive never heard of 16 year olds.

When I first watched this movie, the scene where we see ScarJos feet is heartbreaking The director & writer is Taika Waititi, who also played Hitler. Most of the time he played a burlesque of Hitler. Once or twice he channelled the man quite accurately. You can tell when. I think that Jojos mom knew about Captain Ks secret, which is why she was so unrestrained around him. At the end of the day, they all did "what they could," including Captain Ks deliberate sacrifice at the end.

This is easily one of if not my favorite movies all time. I think it does so many things so well, balancing drama with comedy and bringing light to a really dark topic. The symbolism of so many scenes, like the windows after he finds his mother looking like the eyes of his German neighbors watching without helping ending with the only person who consoles him ends up being the same person that was being made out to be a monster ( Jews). There is also the "heil hitler" joke when the gestapo shows up and after the third time they introduce them selves you are tired of the "joke" but then it happens again when Elsa introduces herself but this time you definitely aren't laughing its suddenly tense almost reminding you that while yes this is a comedy these events were real and terrifying and there is a point when jokes stop being jokes and become reality so be aware. I just love this movie so happy to see your reaction to it, it is an all time great in my opinion.

So often in movies where there are kids it can be a big slog. But in this movie particularly there wasn't a single moment where I thought, oh that kid shouldn't have been cast, or he doesn't have the chops yet. I was so engrossed with the story and the characters that even the kids felt like they were killing it. It's a coming-of-age tale of a kid who had been indoctrinated throughout his ENTIRE life by the German National Socialists to the point that he idolized Hitler. Over a short period of time, he begins to understand after meeting a Jewish girl who effectively reinforced the things that his mom had taught him. It really is a beautiful story. I also believe that it is one of the most tightly-written scripts that we've seen in years. As a screenplay, I place it right up there with films like Hot Fuzz, 12 Angry Men, The Shawshank Redemption, Back to the Future, Fargo, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Galaxy Quest.

He served in the Army during WWII while his cousins, and my grandmother's oldest brother, served for Germany. Now that I'm older I can't imagine what that must have been like. All the horror of war with the added complexity of knowing members of your own family were on the other side. This film beautifully walks that line between comedy and tragedy.

I really fell in love with this movie. And it was completely by accident. Definitely not the type of movie I'd purposely watch. But it really landed home. Everyone did beautifully. Merchant, Rockwell, Wilson, Johanson. Even little Yorki. Admittedly somethings did go over my head or missed. The movie was so darling that at first I flat out refused to believe they killed his mother. I assumed it was some other woman with the same shoes. So it didnt have the emotional impact on me as it should have. Also Captain K's showing up wasn't coincidental. The one time I appreciate a comments section. Overall, this was a beautiful movie that I loved more than I think I did. It doesn't get talked about enough as if not one of the best in the decade, perhaps of all time.

The writers are strategists, perfect war strategists. They worked an opening in a laughter and slain the audience with one swift blow.

I remember seeing trailers for this film and I did feel comfortable with the fact that they were making Hitler into a comedy character and the fact it was based on a young indoctrinated boy in the Hitler youth. I had no interest in watching it, then a friend of mine, who happens to be Jewish, told me how good it is and how I have to watch it, so I did. I must admit that I still felt that it wasn’t for in the first 30minutes or so, but once I got past that introduction and when Scarlet’s character came into the story, the whole tone shifted for me. It just got better and better from there. Some great performances and very clever writing. Sad parts always hit harder when they are inserted in between humour and when he sees his mums shoes then looks up, still hits very hard each time I see it. After my initial hesitation on this film, I now recommend to everyone to watch. Brilliant film.

I really want to see a movie where the two boys in this movie play younger versions of Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Directed by either Edgar Wright or Taika Waititi of course

Oh that's a brilliant idea. Yeah, these two youngsters probably grew up to write comic books or movies or black humor sitcoms.

Captain K also tried to protect Jojo from seeing his mother. When he turned up at the house while they were searching it he had Rosie's bicycle and before he left he told Jojo to stay home today.

Nobody seems to pick up, that at the end not everybody was fighting. But those who were left, were fighting: Children, Women, old men and crippled people. The young german men were pretty much all dead already. The scene in the end depicts that very well. The whole movie does a great job of showing some of the many different kinds of people that there actually were in the german population aswell as how dangerous it was for you and everyone around you to do the right thing. Some were fanatics, some were afraid and didn not do what they could and some did what they could and survived or got killed. The first country the Nazis invaded was Germany after all.

Captain K could have been sent to the camps as well if the Germans knew he was gay. It's why he was so helpful to JoJo and his mother the whole time.

Really glad you reacted to this movie a lot of critics didn’t like it but I think it’s a minor masterpiece. The really Tall guy from the Gestapo is Stephen Merchant who co-created the Comedy “The Office”

At the beginning of the movie during the book burning you can see Sam Rockwell's character in the background looking apathetic because he hates doing what he's doing.

As you point out, Sam Rockwell's character does a few things in the movie that demonstrate true heroism. (No, not the same brand of heroic resistance we learn about Scarlett Johansson, to be sure.) These are just tiny moments in the film, passing by as incidental plot points. Not much is made of it, but his actions manage to save the lives of two children. I like to hope in true Nazi Germany, similar acts of anonymous heroism were performed dozens of times a day across the country, by nameless, forgotten people. Some were caught, punished, executed, while others were fortunate to escape undetected, never to be known. While this film has a few different themes, what hits hardest for me is how this film is a tribute to all of those unknowns - names and faces forgotten but defiant in the face of true evil. The people we all hope we ourselves would be. David Bowie's "Heroes" is the perfect song to sum up the film; dancing, in the end, upon the fraudulent front of fascism.

Indeed! Captain K actually saves JoJo twice. First, when he helps Elsa avoid being captured by the Gestapo (hiding a Jew in your house was a serious offence) and then at the end.

Captain K is by far one of the best characters. If you watch a second time you’ll notice … - that captain k was obviously gay. - he has a look of disgust on his face when the kids were burning the books - when JoJo asks about what he should do if he finds a Jew and asks about mind control which is what was in the propaganda, Captain K quickly brushes past it telling him that he doubts it’s true and tries to change the subject. - when showing up to Jo Jo’s house when the gustapo? Spelling? was there he was carrying Jojo‘s mom‘s bike, he knew she was already dead and rushed to make sure they didn’t find the girl and take JoJo in as a traitor. - when they were looking at the YooHoo Jew book and Elsa said it was hers Captain K shoots a knowing look at Jojo because ge knows it’s his. - His extravagant outfit in the end battle is decorated with pink triangles which was the sign the nazi made gay people wear. He was out and proud I’m his last moments ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜 The thought and care that was put into writing and making this movie was I incredible.
