Captain K was likely against being a Nazi given the clues throughout. He and Theon Greyjoy were likely in a relationship which was of course against German and worldly views at the time. He also showed up to Jojos house because he knew what had happened to Rosie because it was her bike he had. He was most likely part of Rosie’s group too.

Captain K's character is subtle, but there are buried hints throughout the movie that he's disillusioned with the Nazis (especially if he's secretly gay, because he'd be in the camps himself if he wasn't a soldier). Re-watch his introductory scene at the Youth camp, and listen to what he actually says to the boys about the war, and the tone of voice that he uses: it's full of sarcasm as he recites the Nazi party line.

@@charlize1253 captain K is against the nazis, every man and boy was forced into the whole thing (well of course not all men) but Captain K is constantly drinking is what probably helps him get through it. It’s also early on and he’s tired of it all. And he’s absolutely gay, it’s confirmed he is in the movie and it’s pretty obvious too. He also helped save the Jewish girl when the Gestapo was there and the line he says too “get a new picture, you look like a ghost” indicating he knows. Him and Jojo mother and father was working together, technically, along with his partner. They knew the parents and their daughter (I think) were in the resistance. And talking about early on in the war and movie he even said. “There’s no hope we will be winning this war.”

What I like about this movie is that Jojo doesn't realize that his own family is considered "undesirables" by Hitler. His sister died of influenza meaning she was sickly, both his parents were rebels and after the grenade accident Jojo himself was "deformed." The Red Army was pretty ruthless when it came to Germans since the Nazis saw them as subhuman, that's why we see them executing officials compared to the Americans riding around with the flag.

There are subtle hints about Rosie and Captain K that are easy to miss. Re-watch Captain K's introductory scene at the Youth camp, and listen to what he actually says to the boys: he's actually very sarcastic and passive-aggressive as he recites the Nazi party line. When Jojo and Rosie are looking at the dead bodies, he asks: "what did they do?" and she responds: "what they could," which suggests that she agrees with them.

Most people miss the upside-down pink triangles that Freddie Finkel is wearing with Captain K at the end of the movie. That pink triangle is what the Nazis used to identify homosexual men in concentration camps (like the yellow star of David for Jewish people). It's one of my favorite details ever. When I saw Captain K holding Freddies cape with the pink triangles on it right before he was shot, I wanted to cry 🥲

Fun tidbit about Taika Waititi (the man who played Hitler). From Wikipedia: “Waititi stated that his mother's family were Russian Jewish, Irish, and other European ethnicities, while his father's side was "Māori and a little bit of French Canadian".Waititi describes himself as a "Polynesian Jew". He was raised more connected to his Māori roots, in a household where Judaism was not "actively practis[ed]"” He’s talked about how they just couldn’t find someone who could play their vision of Hitler. Eventually, he thought that who else than a Polynesian Jew? If Hitler could actually see this Brown Jew portray him as a pitiful man, he’d be outraged. And that was Taika’s goal 😊

Was so excited for this reaction. You did not disappoint. This is my favorite movie and Taika Waititi has become a writing hero of mine because of it. Couple of fun facts: 1.) This was supposedly the first movie of the kid who played JoJo. 2.) This movie was super hard to get someone to pick it up because it's so hard to define. 3.) Taika's mom told him about a book and described it to him in a way that made him want to read it. When he read the book he was completely bemused to find the book was not how she described it. This movie is closer to the way his mom described it. 4.) The studio picked it up under the condition that Taika played Hitler. He said he couldn't think of a better FU to Hitler than to have a half jewish person play him.

Captain k was a marksman shot. So when he shot wildly in the war, he wasn't trying to kill anyone. He came out wearing his homosexual symbol (the pink triangle), which is why he put so much thought into his outfit/uniform. He was ultimately a good guy despite living in nazi germany.

The scene when the Gestapo come and search the house is so good. At first, the movie keeps the gimmick of the heil Hitler salute being weird and lame (which it was), but when Else turns up and does it, it's no longer funny. Every salute gets more and more uncomfortable, especially since Else is doing it too. The tension is obviously already there when the Gestapo turn up, but the mood is still fairly light hearted with the jokes and everything, which makes the Else interaction even more scary, since the tension can finally speak for itself

He has got some really good stuff all around tho- from Boy to Thor: Ragnarok to What We Do in the Shadows. Also about both of them dancing at the end of this movie, here’s a quote from Taika (from doing an interview about Boy): “We have a tradition in Māori culture, where if you say anything of any importance or if you’re speaking your mind, or if you give a speech, or if you’re in a public forum and you have something to say, you will say it and then you are culturally obliged to follow that up with a song. You have to do it. You know, you can’t speak and then not sing. So, we all grew up with that tradition. Really, having that thing at the end of the film is, you know, our song at the end of our speech.”

Taika Waitit wrote such an incredible script to capture the mindset of a child lvining in Nazi germany and going through the war. ---- One of the inspirations that Taika took was from looking at early footage of Hitlaer rallies before the war. IN which young girls would fan girl him like a member of the beatles. ------- So Waitit tok that mindset and thought a fan boy of Hitler would fanboy about him all the time, as well as all the other people who were in the town where JoJo lived. ------ An amazingly insightful approach to a very tricky and difficult subject such as Adolf Hitler.

The film making choice of showing the mom's shoes a lot throughout the movie and then have them be the thing that identifies her when Jojo finds her dead is absolutely amazing, it's genius! All we see is a pair of shoes and yet it conveys all the information and all the emotion, which really proves you don't need to see a dead body to feel all the weight of the loss in this scene (usually in war movies, you see a lot of bloody bodies and there is this big show of people dying). You're so caught up in this butterfly chasing scene with the butterfly symbolizing hope and then Jojo just stands up and it takes a second to register the shoes and the implication, then it hits you like a TON of bricks and the feel of the movie really goes from light, lighter with the butterfly to BAM super super heavy with the shoes. Like, my heart became lighter and then it SANK. It's BRILLIANT film making, I wish I had ideas half as good as that.

The ideology and the shit they were teaching the children at the jungvolk/ hitlerjugend for example was actually that ridiculous. I really loved that this was a comedy, they were spot on with the humor. The comedy and the drama in this movie were perfectly leveled. I think this is one movie that should be shown at schools in every history class when talking about ww2. The cinematography and storytelling were absolutely brilliant- just the fact that we've got to see it from the perspective of a little german boy was so interesting to me. This movie was executed really well and some people still took it the wrong way. There was a whole article about how it was nazi propaganda and how it glorified Hitler, when it was nothing like that. The story's told by a kid and we're ultimately seeing his POV, that's why the camp scenes are "funny", for example; because that's how Jojo used to see the world. That's why the moment we're introduced to Elsa it feels like a horror movie, because Jojo (brainwashed as he already was) thought she was a monster. The moment he started thinking of his own, spending time with Elsa away from the nazis, he could see she was a human being like him. And probably one of my favorite parts, it SHOWS how, even when Jojo was loyal to the party, that didn't save his mom. They weren't going to make exceptions because he saluted or "behaved well". Taika did a great job here and even portraying Hitler, he said once that he didn't even do research because that guy didn't deserve it; and also that him, being half Jewish would be a slap to Hitler (so to speak). That scene with Rebel Wilson's character describing Jewish people was NOT meant to be taken seriously (I'm saying this because of the article, not you), the whole point of this movie was to show how ridiculous nazi's views were and how still some people got brainwashed by them, plus how much pain and destruction those stupid ideals caused. Or that scene where the Gestapo goes to Jojo's house and they all salute and how the guy speaks about Hitler, it just shows how insanely fanatic they all were, they're not glorifying nazism at all, quite the opposite. It takes cleverness to write a script like this one, but it's sad that some people who watched didn't have enough brains to understand the obvious message it sent. English is not my first language, that's why this message seems all over the place (and I'm sorry about that) but uuuuugh, I have so much to say about this movie, because I think it was an amazing way to tell a story and show how cruel and terrible and dangerous those ideals were (and, sadly, still are). I try not to care much about other people's bad takes on movies because at the end of the day maybe I'm the one who didn't understand plots, but my God, when people don't get this movie it's like it hurts my brain, but not in a sad way, it's more like "I can't believe you didn't understand this, I just can't". I'm SO glad you reacted to this!

GeStaPo stands for GEheime STAatsPOlizei (Secret State Police). It was the Nazi Intelligence Agency. Their main objective was to find and eliminate the "unwanted" and everyone else who dared to show signs of resistance against the Government. They were very efficient, had a tight information network over the whole country and were feared by everyone. Nearly all german resistance movements were destroyed by them and the members were sent to the scafold (like the White Rose -group for example).

This movie has so much heart and somehow manages to balance the comedy with the seriousness of what was going on during this time in history. Really brilliant movie... There was a fine line they couldn't cross when making fun of certain things, but they never did. Saw this last year and it's one of my favorite movies out there. Also, Jojo's mom said she never looked a tiger in the eye? That's not true, she looked the Nazi regime (theoretical tiger) in the eye trying to help people. The guy that covered for Jojo and the Jewish girl knew something happened to the mother, so he rushed over there after he found her bike without her. When he comes in the door, you can see it with him. He came to cover to protect her kid not knowing about the Jewish girl. You could see the surprise on his face seeing her for the first time. Obviously you guys realized that Capt K. was a homosexual and was in the resistance as well. If you love Sam Rockwell, have to look into A Way Way Back. It's a coming-of-age story.

Captain K is the most subtle and complex character in the movie. My read on him is that he's a career soldier who genuinely revels in wartime heroics, and his disappointment at being removed from combat due to his injury is genuine. But at the same time, he is not on board with Nazi ideology. This is indicated early on by his lack of enthusiasm for his post as a Hitler youth camp counselor, which consists of little more than propagandizing children. This is particularly written on his face during the book burning scene, where he stands in the background sullenly swigging from his flask. As explanation for his his apparent revulsion to Nazism, the movie indicates many times that he is in a relationship with Freddie Finkel. The two are completely inseparable. At one point you briefly see him feeding Finkel while they dance to music. When he apologizes for yelling at Finkel, they look each other in the eye for a little longer than they intended to. And in Captain K's final scene, he is still holding Finkel's cape (a heartbreaking addition to the scene that's easy to miss). As for the battle scene itself, one of you remarked that Finkel didn't seem to be shooting at anything specific. This is another important indication that neither of them is there to fight for the Nazis. They're there to go out in spectacular fashion, in their flamboyant uniforms that represent who they really are. They know that, as loyal soldiers of the German army (at least officially), they will likely be killed. This is their last hurrah, and they're doing it on their own terms. The extent of Captain K's involvement in the resistance is left ambiguous, but it's suggested that he knows all about Rosie's involvement, as the two of them are clearly friends. He presumably knows that Rosie has been killed (or that she's been captured), and rushes to JoJo's house to do what he can to protect him and (and maybe Elsa, who he may or may not have already known about). This is probably why he tells JoJo to stay in, as he doesn't want JoJo to have to see his mother hanging.

Captain K is a very historical character type for germany at the time. You had people like rebels character who were all in with Nazi ideology, then you had the poor souls who got caught up in it. There is a reason why rosie says of the hanging people "doing what they could".

I like the scenes when Hitler offers Jojo cigarets. Hitler was a non-smoker and even wanted to bann smoking from Germany - shows how little Jojo knows about the real Hitler.

You should watch pulp fiction. Austin powers movies. Interstellar. Inception. The hunger games trilogy. A star is born (60s version). Singin in the rain. I love your channel. As an introvert with public anxiety issues and vocal socialization problems, you make me feel at ease when im not all there. My mental health problems get to me. You're so calm, so genuine, and not loud. I dont have a lot of friends for the same reasons, so it makes me brave to speak to someone and have conversations when im not fully there. You don't know what your reactions can do to some people who are going through some stuff. I've watched a few of your videos and look forward to more.

Another reason why Hitler is there is to "take the teeth out of the monster" so to speak. Most WW2 films only ever show him in real life footage, or at his rallies, so to make him a complete and utter buffoon is a good choice. Also why he's a figment of Jojos imagination.

They showed the ridiculousness of the ideology which makes the movie both funny and sad. Yorki definitely was the MVP. Though Rebel did a stellar job as well. I like how a lot of the more cruel staff wasn't shown outright but we got the reactions to it. It packed more of a punch. Like Jojo finding his mom or Captain K's death. I was also really grateful for the Captain K and Freddy Finkel story line. They were walking a very fine line of being subtle while being fully in the open. That scene of them charging at the other army in their gay coded uniforms was my favourite moment of the movie. And they both did such a wonderful job. The really tall guy who played the head of the Gestapo team is Stephen Merchant. He is an actor and writer and director and created The Office wiht Ricky Gervais. He is 6 ft 7 in (201 cm).

“She knew them?” “She may have been in the walls for a while bro….” You don’t have to know someone by being friends at school then automatically going to their house after or on weekends. People have plenty of friends who don’t meet parents and this occurs at all ages.

Fun fact. Hitler hosted the 1936 Olympics in Berlin. Joseph Goebbels, in preparation for the games put out propaganda about the superior German athletes and the master race and all of that bs. An American named Jesse Owens, who was Black, dominated the games. Hitler and Goebbels never got over that. In the movie Inglorious Basterds Goebbels briefly talks about Black athletes and his ridiculous justification of their strength. It’s implied Goebbels was still bitter about Owens’ victory at the Berlin Olympics.

When y’all posted your announcement to this I was ecstatic! This is one of my favorite movies of all time! It’s able to execute the PERFECT dynamic balance of comedy and drama in such a beautiful and engaging way. It’s such a tender character driven story with so much heart at it’s core, the visuals are also just so striking and the contrasts with the darker imagery are so impactful and create amazing tonal shifts so smoothly. The dialogue too is a 10/10. I think it’s an insanely creative, ambitious, and instant classic that everyone needs to see-thank y’all for covering it!🫶
