Friendly reminder, WB quote "BEGGED" Todd Phillips, the director of this turd, to be the CEO of DC Studios before James Gunn. If you had any hope for the future of DC...
that's because they were desperate, they understood how lucky was marvel to get feige, someone that isn't perfect either, but did a good job, being the ceo of a whole studio with so many tasks and parts is difficult

@@deangagatr3886 But Jester says that this one completely negates the premise of the first movie, which by corollary negates anything THIS movie might be trying to say (and she also says that this movie doesn’t manage to actually even make its ostensible point anyway). If the first one was about “holding a mirror up to society,” then what is the point of now saying that actually society wasn’t to blame for anything in the first movie? Likewise, as Jester also says, Phillips seems to be going with this manufactured media strawman of the fans of the first movie, so if it is “holding up a mirror” to them, it is a warped funhouse mirror. Or more accurately, a caricature of Phillips’ own creation which doesn’t resemble its subject in the slightest.

For a few moments I thought the film was going to criticize mental health care systems, because of the way the guards treat Arthur, that scene of abuse, but no, not only do the abusers get away unharmed, the victim is stabbed to death.
It really made no sense, everything gathers to a point of tension. In the first movie Arthur develops Joker to combat and disasociate from these tramautic events. The ending of "Yeah I had bad things happen to me but I shouldnt react to it" has no supporting scenes whatsoever that would help him even lead to that decision.
@ Devorador_de_sonhos It wouldn’t have been so revolting if it didn’t end on the “you get what you fucking deserve!” line, as he was shanked. I mean….what are they saying? The constant neglect/abuse he received was deserved? Getting killed instead of rehabilitated was deserved? He did bad things, but Christ, it’s like the movie swept ALL the bad things the faulty mental/justice systems/society did under the rug and pinned it all on one guy that never had a chance. It’s gross and a negligent way to write, but the film makers believe it was deep.
What's with these recent DC projects and being afraid to use the characters names. "We won't call her Harleen Quinnzel or Harley Quinn for short. We'll call her Lee." "We won't call him Oswald Cobblepot. We'll call him Oz Cobb."
As a mentally ill person, with many of the same conditions Arthur suffers from, I am angry that they went back on the themes of the first film - which had made such loud and important commentary on the subject.
I think Joker 1 had a good message about mental healthcare. Not sure why the media made it seem like it was some school shooter’s fantasy. Maybe because it was also critical of the mass media

I can count on one hand how many movies I've seen at a theater since they reopened after the Pandemic. My wallet is very happy, and I've found so many good, old movies online which I hadn't seen before. Hollywood can keep putting out crap, I'll ignore most of it and go to see the few gems which somehow manage to get made. It'll probably be at least another year before I need to start counting on my second hand.
A good Joker and Harley movie would be something like Natural Born Killers. I watched that film in my Film Theory class earlier this year, and it baffles me that something like it wasn't the direction WB went with for a sequel to 2019's Joker. You'd have maddening visuals, you'd have a perfect opportunity to adapt Mad Love RIGHT (basically frame it like an old medical drama the same way the main couple in NBK's first meeting is framed like a macabre I Love Lucy parody), you'd get a lot of in-character Harley (if the suits let her be the pathetic, dependent girlfailure she's meant to be), and you'd have 2 hours of the Joker being a flamboyant, sadistic killer and abusive freak.
That actually makes perfect sense, especially with the subplot in Natural Born Killers about the media turning Mickey and Mallory into celebrities for killing people. You know what: let’s all just watch that movie and pretend that Joker: Folie a Deux never existed.
I think a better movie would've seen Arthur Fleck in Arkham Asylum, surrounded by would be Jokers. Maybe William Dafoe could've played one of these aspiring jokers since he expressed interest in playing the titular clown prince of crime. I don't know, just spit balling a rough idea and throwing out there.
@@alexanderpabon2933 Forget Todd Philips, we'll get Tommy Wiseau as director and screenplay by Neil Breen. The loose plot is Arthur is in prison but hears that the McRib went out if stock. If he can bring it back, he can get out of prison and freed of all charges. I don't know. Every scene past that point has Willem Dafoe chanting "McRib" in the background. Arthur also has sex with a McRib. In court, he argues that the McRib needs to be put back onto the menu, teases Gary with a moldy old saved McRib and instead of Lady Gaga, Harley Quinn is played by Lizzo who explodes through the court and kidnaps him. Arthur escapes and is brought back to prison. Keep in mind too, Willem Dafoe is still chanting McRib in the background and just standing there. THEN he finally kills Arthur and yells "The MCRIB IS BACK!" And he also eats a McRib that makes it look like a joker smile with the BBQ sauce. I probably put more love into this shitpost than Todd Philips put into this sequel.
@The_Based_Batman Hmm. I think the summary should go something like this: Arthur Fleck stands trail after inciting an insurrection against McDonald's that resulted in the death of several Gotham citizens. He must prove to the court that it was the McRibb that caused him to become radicalized. Proving such a thing won't be easy for him, however. While awaiting his trail in Arkham Asylum, Fleck bumps into McRibb enthusists (William Dafoe and Lizzo) who threaten his life if he succeeds in blaming the McRibb for his crimes. Now, Fleck must make the difficult choice to either save himself or the McRibb.

Arthur and The Joker are two separate personalities or identities? The whole point of the first one was that he finally and victoriously found his real identity as the joker. So this movie sounds like it is taking back that victory. Who wants to watch a movie where the protagonist just consistently suffers and fails on every level? That doesn't even work with art films.
The only thing. ONLY thing about this movie I was interested in, was a different portrayal of Harley Quinn. WE have a different version of Joker in EVERY movie, but we only really get one version of Harley.
There's a Batman Telltale game! Watched a let's play of it. Harley has a minor part in it...she's a manipulative, domineering person, as I recall. Joker's basically a Batman fan-character. It takes liberties and risks, not saying they work, but it might be worth looking at.

And yes Im a Hannah Montana defender, this show didn't aged poorly! Nevermind. Joker Foliè a Deux has now a IMDb rating of 5,3. It no longer shares the same score with Hannah Montana and Violetta.
The Joker _film_ is a character study and while Phoenix gave an excellent performance, the film itself was made to stand alone, distinct from the Batman franchise. I'm guessing the decision to make a sequel came from some studio exec who was far more interested in $$$ than artistic expression. Studio Exec: Hey, you know that thing you did that made us all that money ? Yeah yeah yeah, do that again.
Yeah, I heard he hadn't planned to make it. I can imagine it being rather like: Studio exec: _We want you to direct a Joker sequel!_ Todd Phillips: _No, it was made as a stand alone movie._ Studio exec: _Oh come on, we'll give you whatever you want!_ Todd Phillips: (Thinking: Oh damn, how can I get them to stop bothering me with this?) _Okay, give me a $200 million budget, and it's gonna be a musical!_ Studio exec: _It's a deal!_ Todd Phillips (Thinking: Oh shit. . . )
@@zxyatiywariii8 I had assumed that 'Joker' (2019) was an experiment to see how the audience would react to Phoenix as the new Joker, since Jared Leto's performance had mixed results. If 'Joker' had bombed then it could be written off as an _alternate_ _universe_ and forgotten. But, since 'Joker' was a hit I was fully expecting 'The Batman' (2022) to have Phoenix reprising the role, but we got 'Folie A Deux' instead and now everything is a train wreck.
I thought the Looney Tunes intro was good. I agree that the scenes are very random and that there is no plot to the film. There definitely were a lot of unneeded scenes and rehashing of the first movie. When it comes to Harley, we got way less of her than they let on. Once they broke out of Arkham, I was assuming the mayhem of Arthur and Lee would begin and it never did. It was just the musical aspects instead. Some of em were nice and the rest were unnecessary. Very repetitive as you said. I wanted so much more of Lee's story and there wasn't much of it. We didn't get enough of her to learn much. I wanted a Bonnie and Clyde dynamic in this as well. The musical sequences we'rent tied into the story well. It got completely lost. This movie had so much potential. What a shame. The acting between them was great and i wish we got more of that because the rest of the movie was off
Like you said Jester; I was just as confused when it was revealed it was a musical but I was still optimistic because I was so hopeful in assuming the musical portions would match certain moments of psychopathy between Joker and Harley when they do something evil. But then when it was revealed that Phillips basically made this movie as a hate-letter to “fans” who put the character on a pedestal, assuming EVERYONE who saw it believes Joker is a morally superior and correct character - when in fact, it’s from those small niche Internet forums/communities that are actual incels and loners with a distorted worldview that are not representative of the entire audience. Goes to show that creatives are so far up their ass and have no interactions with regular people and just look at a few opinions on the internet.
It's hard to not call everything the-worst-thing-ever because the overwhelming majority of content made today would have been laughed at if it was released alone side anything that came out more than 10 years ago (actually, more than 5 years ago even). Kinda sad that the Joker movie never got a sequel. Similarly to other great movies that never got a second outing, such as The Crow or Pacific Rim. Truly a pitty.
You forgot Mulan: if it wasn't a traditional story, it would definetly had a second cartoon expanding on it. Because what's the point of making, I don't know, an Alice in wonderlands 2?
It wasn't a troll on the part of the director. If anything he may have been coerced into it in the sense that he may have been under the impression that his career would be destroyed if he didn't do it. The point of this was the demoralization of the fan base in and of itself. They see the fans of the first movie as the same people who repeatedly embarrassed studios like lucasfilms and Disney and the type of people who work on things like the She-Hulk. I'm sure most of it was filmed in 2023 when these people had one of the worst years they've had in a long time. Kathleen Kennedy was mocked on South Park, they had the band The ADL campaign on Twitter, they had to damn near cancel the Snow White movie and push it back at 2025. They blame these fans for everything.
I was hoping it would be good. I love Lady Gaga and I had a really powerful experience watching the first film. I watched a free showing at tthe public library about a month before covid lock down. More than half of the audience were homeless people who were there to get out of the cold for a couple hours. At the time I was living in a halfway house and this context really underscored the themes of mental health and class in the film.
Childish behavior when writers some how make good movies only to follow up with weak sequels openly mocking and insulting the fans. Easily TERRIFIER 3 is expected to succeed way better by comparison because the fan base is respected. Side note I also recommend THE SUBSTANCE as a bonus.
Sadly, not the movie I dreamed of, but I thought Gaga's Harley was great, just very underused. I really wanted to see way more of the two of them creating chaos in Gotham, but most of it was in the courtroom. Some of the music scenes were great, and some were unnecessary. I really think they should've gone the "Mad Love" origin story approach and had her come in as Dr. Harleen Quinzel. I don't mind her as an inmate already, but we didn't get enough of that. The ending sucked and I don't understand why they killed him off that way. Another thing Harley wise that I was happy with was the fact that she loved Joker and wanted him to be Joker, not just Arthur, himself. That's on brand with pre new 52 Harley, at least. And of course, her color scheme harlequin outfits are gorgeous. The musical aspect did ruin the hype for the movie so I knew this wouldn't go amazing lol I get some of the reasons why people dislike it. It is not what I wanted. Overall, there were some few specific scenes with them that I loved. If only there were more of them. I honestly loved Gaga in this like even more than I did Joker. I thought she was fantastic in the amount of time she was given. I wanted more of her.
Beetlejuice 2 was fun as fuck. Same studio, same unnecessary sequel, completely different result. It's stayed true to the original and it was fresh and fun, with just enough fan service and nostalgia but not relying too hard on it. Funny how WB wanted to release BJ2 straight to streaming and Tim Burton had to take a budget cut and FIGHT to get it in theaters 😂
I should have walked out, too. This movie was absolute trash. It was not The Joker or Joker. The film literally tells us that. So, we were all conned into watching two movies about a man that was not who we were told. False advertisement. The Joker is an intellectual property. So, to reveal that he is not The Joker or Joker is underhanded business. The audience deserves an apology and refunds. Yes! Give me my money back.
You know, if DC truly wanted to make a great Musical idea? They could have used a Batman villain whose whole gimmick is music, The Music Meister! In the past Neil Patrick Harris played him, imagine if we got a different stage actor to play him in a classic La La Land style film with a psychological thriller side. It could feature some popular Batman characters as well and give each their own musical style, like I’m thinking Riddler could have either a showman or Elton John style, Magpie (who’s a kleptomaniac villain obsessed with anything shiny) could have either a tango, or Maria and The Diamonds style, Scarecrow could have a Billie Eilish style, and Harley Quinn could have an electro swing jazz or vaudeville style. Music Meister could either have the music in his mind or make it his own powers forcing people to sing their inner thoughts like in the show Batman Brave and The Bold. If I was casting I’d choose broadway actor Aaron Tevitt as Music Meister, Anya Taylor Joy as Harley Quinn, RU-vidr Annapantsu as Magpie, Neil Patrick Harris as The Riddler, and maybe Adam Lambert or Caleb Hyles as Scarecrow.
This film does have one novelty (i am sure created by accident): here we see a completely new version of Harley Quinn. Lee is a ruthless, manipulative person that uses her charm to achieve her goals.
Which is another negative of the film, as Harley Quinn is the opposite of that.. Joker 2 is a movie about a Joker that is actually not Joker and a Harley Quinn that is not Harley Quinn... Bravo Hollywood.. Next time make a film called Superman that is about the exorcism of a young kid
31:11 I agree with you, I just don't understand why she accepted to get her important scenes get cut off... She has so much potential as an actress, she was good in A star is born, House of Gucci and AHS. I don't know if it can damage her career, she had other dramas about her looks, things she said or performances she made that in fact were really controversial enough to destroy her career but it didn't. For Todd I think he can retire now, nobody at Hollywood will find him enough credible to allow him to produce new movies... For Joaquin... I really like the person he is but also the actor, but he always repeat the same mistakes. He modified the plot of this movie, he left the filming of Todd Haynes movie, etc... Why does he did that ? He worth better than that. I didn't watched the movie yet, some ppl told me that it is good and some other that it was bad. I don't think it's possible to make a worse movie than any unoriginal movies like Madame Web or Borderland... I think it can be deceiving but not the worse. It’s not the worst this year when Borderlands and Madame Webb exists. This movie at least had some scenes and ideas that could’ve worked had it been given better context and written differently. But man this was really disappointing, because I love that first one. The relationship between Joker and Harley not being expound on greatly after coming off that first one is really sad, because this could’ve been an incredible twisted love story given how intricately the writing in the first truly focused on Arthur’s psyche. Could’ve been so interesting to study what happens when a man like Arthur and a lonely psychiatrist somehow become fond of each other.

The first Joker movie was NOT the Joker as comic book fans know him, but people tried SO hard to pretend. In the end, Arthur wasn't meant to be idolized.
I care about Arthur. I think most of the audience cares about him. Its Todd who doesn't care about him and with this movie, it shows because even though Arthur was being beat on and mistreated in the first movie, he defended himself. In this one he has any power he gained completely stripped from him and is demasculated, turned into an absolute cuck of a punching bag. Lady Gaga's character also serves to put him down as weak.
