It's literally possible for a Joker to have a story without Batman. First movie is the proof of that. Joker has other character traits then "being Batman's enemy", there's a room to explore. Especially since this Arthur-Joker is his own thing. This isn't the issue. It's the sudden change of tone, formula and character. I mean, it's just so weird that a sequel to the psychological, slow-paced, serious character-study movie would be a musical. Like, what the hell😆

What happened was Joker wasn’t a “Joker” movie, it was a “Falling Down” type movie that they stuck Jokers name on. Joker also wasn’t supposed to have a sequel…then it made a lot of money. I’m not knocking the first movie, I just think it was a great movie about mental health, that they forced a Joker and Batman tie in on.

Joker 2 had the potential for a straightforward appeal. While the first movie was criticized for allegedly 'idolizing killers,' I appreciated its raw, grounded portrayal of the Joker. The direction this sequel took, however, is baffling, and it’s surprising it passed storyboarding or a rough draft. Casting Gaga as Harley Quinn could have been a brilliant move-she could play a psychiatrist, brought in by the defense after observing 'The Joker' in Arkham Asylum or Blackgate Penitentiary, only to be slowly corrupted by him during their sessions, ultimately descending to his level. The musical elements might have worked if used in their hypnotic, trance-like interactions, making the scenes unsettling rather than comedic. A more powerful conclusion could have explored a darker, twisted love story. Instead of being present at his sentencing, Harley’s absence could have shattered Arthur's composure, leading him to lash out at the attorneys or jury, causing the failure of his split-personality defense. The twist would reveal that Harley is not at the sentencing because she is busy orchestrating his escape, whether during transport or execution. It would have made for a compelling and chilling narrative-showing her as someone who has undergone therapy for her own past trauma, just broken enough for the Joker to twist her into his reflection. Sometimes, all it takes is one bad day and a little coercion-or perhaps even love. IDK just my opinion on it.

@@lcceo22 it’s not disguised it’s just what I would have wanted to see and it’s not a review, it’s what I would have preferred to see then the BS I saw at my early showing. I’m not a professional I’m just a dude who got an opportunity to see it early with no ideas on what I was going in to see but I had high expectations and was really really let down. Edit: also I’m a fan of the comics / DC as you can tell so the departure from any semblance of that bummed me out.

Like Todd said Arthur isn't the joker we think he is, or want him to be..he isn't the master mind criminal with a gang behind him trying to take over gotham. This was just ONE joker..in the ending is another joker followed by another and another I guess. I thought the film was good, no masterpiece like the first, but it was good. They could have done without the musical. I'm sorry you didn't care for it mate. I respect your opinion. I just feel everyone went into this film thinking of Heaths joker, and looking for easter eggs and hoping Arthur and Lee were going to create havok among gotham. I'm not saying you, I know a few people who went in not really watching the film as a film. Am I'm not defending this because I'm a DC fanboy, I like both marvel and DC comics and films..the same. Its just one story of a man named Arthur who was or wasn't the "joker" again,that inspired another joker.. I could see if this was Batman's joker and it being a musical where it didn't make sense, then it would sux. Gaga was pretty good I liked her. I can see what you mean, but I'm looking at this as an artist I guess..lol..and not as a comic book film, but as a film called joker. Like if joker didn't exist would it make it differently? You know.. I have to see it again to let it settle in, I have to see it by me self. I was with my mate and she kept asking 100 questions😅 kinda difficult to watch a film with someone going "who's that guy?" "Why isn't Batman in this?" 😅 Maybe I feel differently about it watching it alone. But it's not that bad like the Crow 22 or other DC films I can name. I feel some reviews (not yours) were not liking it because everyone else not liking it you know. But good review man..cheers.

Both Phillips and Phoenix have said this was the stand in for a version of the first Joker film they were going to adapt for the theatre which got cancelled due to covid. When they were approached to create a sequel they adapted the theatre idea to a musical film instead and tried to cast based on that (this is where Lady Gaga comes in). The story of this film was always going to be secondary to the concept of Joaquin's Joker in a theatrical setting. Just feels like they missed the mark by a large amount.

Making it a musical was almost certainly not the studio's decision.... and if it was; like Charlie said, Todd Phillips has plenty of money so why did he follow their mandate instead of just walking away if they're "forcing" a musical on him? Joker 2 without the Writer/Director from the first would be a hard sell to fans, especially if the studio was determined to make a musical

Just so you all know: It was , Joaquin Phoenix who had the idea to make this film a musical. Here is what was said: (However, even before the film wrapped, Joaquin Phoenix told director Todd Phillips that he didn't feel ready to leave Arthur Fleck behind; one night while falling asleep, Phoenix had a dream of his character performing onstage, telling jokes and singing, giving him the idea of possibly doing a musical sequel. However, After the original plans were changed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Phillips and Silver began developing a sequel while still considering Phoenix's musical concept. Phillips found the idea risky and "dangerous" enough to give the film "audacity and complexity" with music, dance, drama, courtroom drama, comedy, happiness and sadness and a traditional love story. Aware that young moviegoers may not be interested due to preferring usual comic book films, Phillips banked on their "appetite" for something new and different to help the film differentiate itself from remakes and reboots. Phoenix suggested the idea of teaming Arthur with a "female Joker" that could serve as his dance partner in a "kind of psychotic tango". This led Phillips and Silver to the idea of including Harley Quinn, a female villain associated with the Joker and first introduced in Batman: The Animated Series, to serve that purpose)

SPOILERS I watched it last night and jeeeeez was it a lot… it has a lot to say about the criminal justice system and the struggle of reforming criminals in our society but that last act seemed like a huge left turn. I think they were really trying to make the audience match the Joker cult’s disappointment with the character. Also hated the SA scene it was very very unnecessary and doesn’t change the plot if it’s removed entirely not sure why they included that

I saw it last night. And I get the movie, I didn’t necessarily like it and I’m definitely not in awe like with the first movie. But after thinking about how everyone was portrayed and the concepts they showed with Arthur and him dealing with how the city of Gotham thinks of him, I get it. Just not how I think anyone wanted the movie to go.

3:55 Well you should’ve been up-to-date with what Tod Phillips was saying ever since Joker 2 was released; that is that Joaquin’s Joker was NEVER going to become the Clown Prince of Crime, and that it was a musical. Tod Phillips says that; and yet y’all continued to project your expectations onto the movie; and now that it’s out, you’re review bombing it because it didn’t conform to your presumptions.

Your review makes me want to see this movie. You seem so shocked at what you saw but it sounds exactly like how this movie was described in its promotion. Plus there is absolutely nothing to love about the character of Harley Quinn or Margot Robbies portrayal. Get better taste.

The first movie was not all that. I didn’t see what was so great about it. And Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn was a terrible idea. I’m definitely a core/primary DC fan. The Joker was not meant to be portrayed in a musical. So happy this is going to be the last one.

I thought it would be obvious that this film would fail, as I honestly don’t know how the first one found success since it “STOLE” and Hijacked the joker identity. Joker did not tell the story of joker but rather just a pariah who had been failed by the social programs that are meant to be a benefit and a tool to be used by the less fortunate. It was dumb and this sequel will just expose itself even more.

I feel like Todd just wanted to make a taxi driver style “society sucks” movie in the first place and just used the joker brand to get it out there to more audience because comic books pretty much has taken over half of Hollywood. That’s why he doesn’t care to put actual Batman lore in there because that’s not what he cares about.

I hate musicals, it’s not that i hate music it’s just people in real life just don’t bust out into song and say the whole restaurant joins in and everyone is perfectly choreographed and knows what going on and just acts like it’s normal, if you did this in real life people would think you were a crack head or insane, this is why I hate musicals in movies with real people that are trying to tell a story I’m like this is not Snow White we don’t need you to bust out in song so that’s why I hate musicals

I get Chicago + Sweeney Todd (the musicals) + Joker vibes ... Harley in this universe was aspiring psychologist but was driven mad, and then she meets Joker ... OR she's treating him and all this is an imagination/in his head ... OR she is a literal figment of his imagination. Little voice in his head, singing. Haven't seen it, but those are just the vibes im getting. Regardless, big fan and thank you for the videos/reviews!

I can't really be upset; the Director never planned on making a sequel. The studios pushed everyone for the sake of profit. It seems like he wanted to avoid selling out, so he completely shifted direction to set this film apart from the last, without worrying about creating a universe for his Joker.

I never had any intention of watching the first Joker movie since, from everything I heard and read sounded like Todd Phillips really had no desire to use anything from the DC universe to begin with. (The movie sounded like a ripoff of Taxi Driver to me just being tagged onto the Joker name.) It doesn't surprise me at all that this sequel completely ignores its very vague DC roots the same way. I've never seen any of Todd Phillips movies and this doesn't entice me in the least. Thanks for the warning.

i agree with a lot of the criticism here but also this guy expects and just wants to see the typical batman/dc stuff in the movie. This Joker didn't have to evolve into the typical comic book Joker, because the entire thing about showing Arthur's humanity and redeemable qualities in the first movie wouldn't make sense at all if he'd evolve into a typical unhinged killer who kills for fun. Not everything has to boil down to that same typical theme park comic book stuff with explosions.
